PLANTER SAFETY TIPS FOR SPRING

At Case IH, we design and manufacture every piece of equipment with operator safety as a priority. As farm equipment has gotten larger, the size and weight of the equipment, coupled with the power of hydraulics and mechanical systems used to manipulate and control machines, makes a constant awareness of safety a foremost requirement of any operator. We also understand that planting time places added anxiety and stress on operators who know that the success of a full year is at stake every time they go to the field. However, hurrying never relieves the operator of their responsibility to operate the machine safely. Take a few minutes to review the Operator’s Manual safety information before starting each year. The payback for your time should be a safer and more successful planting season. Do not take shortcuts, thinking that an accident takes time to happen. Accidents can happen in seconds, too often leaving someone plenty time to think about how the accident could have avoided—while they heal.

General Safety Rules

1. Always remember that the Operator’s Manual is first and always the “go to” resource when you have questions about how to operate your machine. The following information is a generalized review of Safety rules. Refer to the Operator’s Manual for complete information. 2. One of the main features of large planting equipment is the ability to quickly move from one farm to another, using public roadways. Take time to become familiar with the traffic laws in your locality and how they apply to your large planting equipment. 3. When operating on public roads always use lights, flashers and turn signals for maximum visibility. Maintain a clean and visible Slow-Moving Vehicle sign on the rear of the machine. 4. Be a good neighbor and pull over to let traffic pass if possible to avoid creating unnecessary delay and stress for other drivers. 5. For best field performance and the most secure road transport, make sure the weight of the implement does not exceed the recommended towing capacity of the tractor being used. 6. Do not exceed the drawbar or towing capacity of the tractor. When transporting front-fold planters, empty seed and fertilizer boxes and tanks whenever possible to reduce tractor drawbar load and total planter weight. 7. When transporting equipment, maintain safe maximum travel speeds to assure complete control, and the ability to stop in case of emergency. Refer to tractor and planter 8. Removing guards for service work is no excuse to leave guards off during operation. Guards are intended to protect operators and any other persons, and must remain intact and installed as originally designed. 9. Review the Operator’s Manual to identify and understand the use of service locks prior to starting service operations. 10. Engage service locks for all service operations. Use jackstands or secure blocking when working under or around raised equipment. Never work on the planter without securely setting and locking service and transport locks in position and removing machine weight from the hydraulics systems. 11. When servicing ground engaging components such as opening disks and firming points, use special care to avoid points and edges worn sharp during use. 12. The design of modern planters places significant load on tires. Always keep tires inflated to the specifications published in your planter Operator Manual. 13. Chemical application is often an integral part of planting. Use the utmost care to protect yourself, other people, and the environment from the effects of overexposure to agricultural chemicals. 14. Follow label instructions for proper chemical mixing, handling and container disposal methods. 15. Be familiar with safety procedures for immediate first aid should you accidentally contact chemical substances. 16. Use the proper protective clothing and safety equipment when handling chemicals. Don’t take chances-work safe. 17. Chemicals are supplied with Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) that provide full information about the chemical, its effects on exposure, and first aid needs in the event of an emergency. Keep your MSDS file up-to-date and available for first responders in case of emergency. 18. Never allow the machine to be raised or lowered while service is being performed. Numerous linkages are used to move and suspend components. PLANTER INSPECTIONS

Dear Valued Customers, At Stoller International we believe your planting equipment is arguably the most important investment in your farming operation. Plant it right and yield results at harvest time. To help you be prepared for the 2016 season we are offering this after season service special to inspect your planter and the tractor that operates it. We are offering this inspection service on the farm or in our shop. This will be a very thorough and detailed inspection. Don’t be fooled by offers of free inspections. We will pay attention to detail and give you honest feedback on the condition of your machine.

We will also do a complimentary inspection of the tractor and give you a report of any issues that need to be addressed.

For just 20 dollars per row we will inspect your metering system, row unit wear parts and the seed supply and vacuum systems for proper operation and fitness for use. In addition we will inspect the mechanical systems on the planter by doing a run of the vacuum system, bulk fill systems and frame and folding to look for any leaks or other operational problems.

The same services to the left will be performed but the rate will be 15 dollars per row instead of 20. Either way you will have the peace of mind in knowing you do not have to scramble in early 2016 to get the planting equipment checked over before hitting the fields. Let our experienced and factory trained techs look it over now before putting it away.

We will also do a complimentary inspection of the tractor and give you a report of any issues that need to be addressed. Any additional work needed to bring either the tractor or planter up to “ready to go” condition will be billed separately and will include a 10% discount on parts installed.

The dual-compartment Unverferth Seed Runner tender for bulk seed not only delivers seed directly to your planter or drill, its innovative, patented design allows it to fill itself! The model 3750 and 3750 XL feature a capacity of 375 seed units and model 2750 holds up to 275 seed units. Models are complete with heavy-duty triple-axle undercarriage with brakes for 3750 and 3750XL, or dual axle undercarriage for model 2750, or can be mounted to your trailer or truck.

The Strobel units save significant labor and time and allow you to plant more acres per day. These well built, water tight, totally welded units were designed and engineered for low maintenance. They are available in 4 models to fit the scale of your operation. They use stage 3 telescoping tube with 19’ max reach and push button operation from auger. The 5.5-9hp Honda engine has an electric start and a 12 volt Solenoid operated clutch. The Strobel seed tenders use 2.1 heavy duty Superior Gear Box and Lundell Poly-cupped Flighting for gentle seed transfer. - All units have tail, turn, and brake lights. 3 and 4 box units have 2 7,000# Torsion Axles with springs and equalizers.

Kinze Advises Planter Prep During Winter Months Mechanics and electronics both affect productivity and the bottom line

WILLIAMSBURG, Iowa – The people at Kinze® Manufacturing, Inc. understand the urgency to get seed in the ground shortly after the planting window opens. Because many Kinze employees also farm, they know how critical proper planter maintenance is to ensuring maximum productivity and efficiency during this short time. While it’s very important for farmers to make sure their planter is mechanically sound, it’s also important to check the electronics and technology on today’s planters.“The electronics on your planter affect productivity and bottom line, just like the nuts and bolts,” says Phil Jennings, Kinze Manufacturing service manager. After farmers check their planter’s mechanics, there is a separate checklist of items they should check regarding their monitors and technology. For farmers to ensure their planter monitor is running properly, Jennings recommends three basic areas to check: display operation, display data/software and the planter components.

Checking Electronics When checking planter electronics, start in the cab. Plug in the display and turn it on. Farmers should take their time inspecting things like the main power connections and relays, harness routings through doors and widows, and GPS connections. Scroll through the different operation screens to make sure that all of the sensors and modules register on the display as they should. Next, farmers should check to be certain they are running the latest version of the software in their display. Updates often become available more than once a year. Staying up-todate gives the operator solutions that may apply to more than just the planting season. What about the information or applied data that is still in the display’s memory from last season? Make a copy and purge unnecessary files from the display. Doing the same for old products and out of date field information can help avoid confusion when navigating through the display later. Now is the time to enter new data; farmers can start plugging in the new seed variety numbers, field changes or implement information.

Last, farmers need to inspect the planter components. Carefully follow the wiring harness routing from hitch pin to seed tube. Stay focused on any areas that move when the machine is folded and around the row unit chains and parallel arms. Be sure to add new tie straps or guarding where necessary. The culmination of this process should be a full function system check. Planters equipped with a hydraulic drive should be run in the shop allowing farmers to verify that the row unit clutches and sectional controls are working as they should. No matter how much technology is added to the planter, it is still the operator’s responsibility to verify that seed monitor and control systems are working properly. Jennings always suggests a true field check after farmers make any adjustments to the planter. “I recommend a full 1/1000th acre field check when any settings or adjustments change,” says Jennings. “The extra 15 minutes it takes to dig up those seeds is an inexpensive insurance policy.” If these tasks are performed before planting, it ensures that farmers will be ready to plant when weather permits.
