MY „SET OF FIVE‟ EXAMPLES OF HOW WRITING IS USED BY GRAPHIC DESIGNERS & ARTISTS
Jenny Holzer
Google Doodles… Dennis Hwang
Tom Judd
Sam Wiston
Andrew Smart
Jenny Holzer After visiting the Waterman's art centre and the Tate Modern I researched into projected work.
I like Jenny Holzer (an American conceptual artist), as her projections of writing is a contemporary way to get across messages.
The main focus of her work is the use of words and ideas in public spaces.

Tom Judd
Tom Judd drew a picture every day for a year ( examples are shown right). He uses writing alongside images to convey his thoughts and messages. I like the writing being hand written, as well as the composition having no real structure, so it‟s more personal and expressive.
“I always have a sketch book everywhere I go, which is where I vent everything and anything that is going on in my mind”.
Google Doodles Dennis Hwang REFERENCE- http://www.google.com/logos
The current official Google logo was designed by Ruth Kedar.
The first Google Doodle was designed by Larry Page and Sergey Brin until Larry and Sergey asked then-intern Dennis Hwang to design a logo for Bastille Day in 2000. Hwang has been designing the Google Doodles ever since.
Writing is an integral part for the Google logo, which is now globally recognizable. The Google Doodles are a clever manipulation and play with the type.

Sam Winston
Sam Winston uses writing in interesting compositions. I like the way he plays with the layout of words. This makes me want to look at it and read it.
With his pieces of work he uses text set in Times Roman and lithographic printed on paper.

Andrew Smart I like the way Andrew Smart uses comic drawings with captions. The writing makes the image more comical. He also uses text in his work to aid the image to give it more meaning.
My Journey… Firstly I used the resources handout.
BIBLIOGRAPHY
When using the Google search engine it made me want to look further into Google Doodles. http://www.google.com/logos
From researching a range of designers and artists I saw a range of different ways visual communicators use writing and found a examples that I liked and inspire me.
After visiting the Waterman's Art centre and Tate Modern made me think more about projection of writing.
I further looked at work and graphic designers that interested me by using the internet.
After seeing the „unleashed devises‟ exhibitions and Rosa Barba‟s work at the Tate Modern I explored other artists which used projection and liked Jenny Holzers work. http://www.jennyholzer.com
I then wasn‟t sure where else to explore, but after Pat Francis workshop it unlocked the mental block! Explored Sam Winston further. http://www.samwinston.com
From „Inspired‟ I found Andrew Smart and from „10 Graphic‟ I found Tom Judd.
I went to the Library and took out „Inspired‟, „10 Graphic,‟ and „Sometimes I think sometimes I am‟ by Sara Fanelli.
I looked at… -„A dictionary story‟ - „Postcards from the Basque country‟ -‟Evidence‟ - „I send you this cadmium red‟ -„Picturing and Poeting‟
I then looked at, and discussed with Pat Francis her books she had brought in.
