PROJECT INFORMATION: Project 3: Brochure Map of Fort Calgary by Katrina Guinto Communication Design II Suzanne Lemermeyer April 17, 2018

PROJECT BRIEF

VSCM 221 Communication Design II VSCM221 Project 3 Description

Communications Design II Brochure Map of Fort Calgary Cultural institutions like theme parks, zoos, museums and science centres, as well as large public spaces — airports, train stations, stadiums, and shopping centres — require maps to inform visitors on how to get around. A useful map communicates with clarity about where the visitor is currently in relation to where they may want to go next. In order to achieve this, the designer must consider clarity of message, hierarchy, unity, colour, illustrative elements, as well as the all-important audience. For this project, you will be designing a brochure map for Fort Calgary. You may choose a map for the general public or for educational visits (grades 1–9). Fort Calgary is a National Historic Site that aims to inform the public of Calgary and the area’s colourful past. Exhibits, both regular and interactive, are housed within the historical Fort. Guided tours are available, and there are a number of educational offerings for classroom activities. The Fort also offers space rental for private functions. (www.fortcalgary.com).

Outcomes

Deliverables

Method

Having successfully completed this project the student will have: • researched the client/audience and developed a creative brief • developed a map that clearly communicates what visitors can expect at site • developed a grid based system that accommodates text and images • developed an informative and engaging visual/verbal hierarchy • • • •

Creative Brief 8.5” x 11” 4/0 (double sided, tri-fold, full-colour map) handout of interior of Fort Calgary Digital file (named FtCalgary_LastName.pdf ), Include Fort Calgary logo, Title, map, legend, address, website, contact info Additional information and illustration/images at the student’s discretion • Process Book and Rationale Visit Fort Calgary and experience it for yourself. Note what information and feelings you got from the exhibit and communication pieces such as current posters, signage, brochures, and perhaps even what they sell in the gift shop. Note also things that confused you. Research multiple maps from museums, interpretive centres, stadiums, etc. Think about different ways that complex location information can be presented. Research the audience. Who will you be speaking to? What are their needs? Develop a folio of research-based roughs by exploring a variety of map concepts. Initial exploration must be done by hand. Use map on pdf provided as a basis for your map. Map does not have to be exactly the same, but it must keep proportion and layout consistency. Explore layout options. Grid, information hierarchy, typographic hierarchy, colour, typography, image resolution, etc. should be considered.

Evaluation Criteria

Introduction to Project and presentation Research (site visit) completed; Exporation 3 x discussion comps (by hand), 1/2 size Presentation for Collaboration Project Development and refinement Project Due, Critique Individual semester project review

Considerations beyond ‘product’ used to determine a final grade will include: a) Developmental process (ideas, thumbnails, roughs) b) Productive use of time allotted - involvement c) Originality (concept) d) Quality and craftsmanship (presentation) e) Level and degree of success (problem solving)* f ) Attendance and class participation g) Pertinent supportive work over and above minimum project requirements (research) h) Personal progress

* As in all VC classes, with any assignments which are somewhat ‘open-ended’, students are required to ‘fill in the blanks’ by discussing their ideas with the instructor insuring that the project will be pertinent to the learning objectives of the class. On-going consultation with the instructor throughout each phase of a project is essential and mandatory. It is the student’s responsibility to read the course outline and consult with the instructor to ensure that they understand the parameters of each course.

RATIONALE Fort Calgary describes themselves as the heart and hub of Calgary, so I chose to explore that narrative in my brochure. This brochure is targeted towards children in the fourth to fifth grade. This age group is old enough to understand the concept of the brochure while being young enough to put in the effort and creativity for the activity on the inside flap of the brochure. Because the target audience is children, I chose to render the brochure in a fun, hand-painted style. I really wanted to highlight the theme of creativity and personal connection. I chose the typeface Waterlily for the title of the brochure because it looks like it was painted with a brush, fitting the style and theme of the brochure. All other text is a sans-serif typeface called Brother 1816. Sans-serif typefaces typically feel more personable and casual than serif typefaces. The colour scheme is bright and fun, which is appropriate for the target audience. The cover shows an illustrated heart that features the city’s landmarks, such as the Calgary Tower, as well as aspects of Calgary, like its ethnic diversity. The inside flap has a blank version of the heart, in which kids can draw what they love about Calgary. They can then cut out the heart and put it up on the wall by the Welcome Desk. Fort Calgary emphasizes the idea of making history, so it was important for the brochure to have an interactive element where the kids are able to personalize what they learn about Calgary and have a way to leave their mark and become part of the museum.
