Geometric building

After researching some buildings, local and global, I noticed they was all geometric. I then decided to research geometric patterns which can form complex shapes from their simplicity, to create a building. I have merged the shapes together to form a tall structure. Most of my curved buildings was tall when I first started my research, but the curved idea is impractical as it creates wasted space and my rsearch of cafes and leisure centres all have a running theme which I should explore.

Models

To the left is a drawing I created from geometric shapes and I have tried to recreate this using wooden blocks to create a 3D model. This model is slightly more compressed than what I intended however it does look like it would be more spacious for a café and a sports centre to be placed in.

I have digitally drawn my building in the way my model looks however I have removed the stability posts. I have decided that the posts are quite effective in my drawing and the building looks too simplistic without them so I will make sure they are reintroduced into further models.

Development

Previous ideas and models

Here I have digitally drawn the building I had briefly sketched from the geometric shapes I had discovered. I have drawn it from multiple view points such as the top, front and sides. This has clearly showed me how my model would function. I have also reinserted the stability posts for decoration as it ads complexity and makes the building more visually pleasing.

3d models

After looking at geometric patterns and merging some together to form a building, I used sketch up to create a 3D model. I kept the model as simple as I can to understand the shape of the building. The contrasting stripes makes the model stand out and almost creates a geometric pattern within the walls of the building. I have took photos from the front, back, top and sides to see how the perception of the shape changes. I added supports to

the tall tower at the top of the building as it looks slightly misplaced yet blends well with the supports on the right-hand side. I took photos with and without edges and profiles so it is clear how the building will blend together and not be segregated and separated. The entrance and door is quite basic, and there is no windows so I would adapt this to make it suitable for my project.

Building in location

As shown my building does not fit in my site. It looks out of place and is too tall compared to its surrounding homes.

After I created my model I discovered the building would be impractical due to its location. Having a tall building would not blend into my location well and would be out of place and not suitable for my target audience.

I therefore have gathered all of the shapes from my taller building and created a shorter yet wider building to be more practical for a sports and café centre. The building has multiple rooms for a multifunctional area.

Model layout

After creating a model from my previous models shapes, I decided to create a single storey building and do some sketches to understand the layout.

I need to consider doorways, windows, exits, entrances and the building potential room ideas, for example sports hall and cafes. My plan view shows the spaces I could potentially segregate the rooms into. I will have to consider the functions of the building in further drawings.

Features

I began to consider the functions of this building. I like the black and white as it is bold and contrasting. I have drawn on the photos where I would place doorways and windows. My roof tops are multi layered and different heights so I was decided id like to add some flowers or ivy. This is due to Rainham being in a small town so a brand new geometric building would be too bold and out of place. Having flowers or ivy would help the building blend into its surroundings. Rainham is highly populated with old people so they may be attracted to the flower exterior due to their hobbies and interests.

Sketches with additions

I have decided I do not like the prism and the pointed bits on top of my mode. They look slightly out of place and have no practicality. They are a useless addition to the model therefore I will remove it.

Model measurements for laser cutter

Here I have drawn out each individual part and worked out measurements suitable for my final model. I will make a small model out of card too ensure the pieces do work together. When making my final model I will make additions to add some complexity to the models structure.

Quick model to check sizing is correct:

Digital drawings of model:

I will make a Demo model of this structure as it does have complexity even though it is relatively simple. I believe that this structure may require additions therefore I will make a demo model before deciding to create a final model.

Demo-model

During my 15 hour exam, I created a model out of card. After creating this I realised that it was not complex enough and the materials was not suitable. I did not like the colours that the card material was made from and I felt the building could be made larger so extra elements could be added.

Brainstorm of ideas:

Perspective:

This was my initial first drawing of my new idea. I decided I wanted multiple colour tones to be added to the design of my building. I felt grey made the building look quite empty and unwelcoming making it would be more unsuitable. Multiple materials should be used to make the building look different and unique so I used black and orange to differentiate the materials from each other.
