THESIS
COMMERCIAL DESIGN
In these senior level courses, students use critical thinking skills through research, writing, discussion, and problem solving. Emphasis is on the identification of a design problem that could be better met through more responsible design. Students choose a research topic with instructor approval. Students then develop a viable and visual solution for the project typically researched in Thesis 1. Solutions incorporate environmentally sound, cost effective, and responsible design methods to influence an audience using creative delivery methods.
Students successfully completing this course will be able to use Computer-Aided Design software to assist them in their threedimensional project development. Students will gain a comprehensive understanding of the integration of computer technology into the design process and an introduction to BIM (Building Information Modeling) technology.
In this advanced course, the design of an upscale, global, corporate interior reflects the comprehensive synthesis of problem identification, research, programming, preliminary design, design development, and construction documents. Problem solving centers on the creative and technical aspects involved in the universal design of commercial environments including space planning with code compliance, way-finding techniques, and specifying corporate furnishings, finishes and materials.
This studio course focuses on environmental issues concerning interior designers and the construction industry. Students participate in discussions on green design topics and learn about resources for improving indoor air quality and more responsible design choices. Following LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) analysis, a final project implements sustainable design methods technically and creatively.

NOTES
[RESTAURANT] IMPORT
The design idea behind this restaurant is to bring the culture of four different countries of the world together.
Schematics produced in AutoDesk AutoCAD.
Germany is the third largest importer and exporter in the world, bringing many cultures to the country. This combining of cultures was the basis for the branding and design behind IMPORT Restaurant. Four countries that are major importers to Germany are France, Russia, Italy, and Japan. Each of these countries is represented in the restaurant and this is where the name IMPORT Restaurant is derived. This restaurant will leave a lasting memory for people who come to dine. Something that will help with this is the branding. The circular symbol is representative of the globe. Reminding people of the different
countries that are showcased in the restaurant. This trademark has four elements to it, just as four countries are represented in the restaurant. This will be one of the first elements of design that people see when they walk into the space. The symbol will be on the wall, on the menus, on the signage, and other key areas. Another way this idea of the circular form being represented in the space is from the wall dividers. The dividers are made up from overlapping copper circles. Branding was carefully considered in the designing of IMPORT Restaurant so it can become a recognizable symbol in the Frankfurt restaurant scene.

IMPORT Restaurant has four distinct dining areas. Each area will offer a different dining experience for the guest. Russia is known for its beautiful architecture. One of the most recognizable architectural features in Russia is the onion dome. This dining area features dramatic lighting fixtures that get their inspiration from the Russian onion dome.
The French are known for “people watching” and spending the day at their local cafe or bistro. This
dining area is reminiscent of those small, local bistros. The banquette seating is perfect for a romantic couple to enjoy each others company. The blue color of the seats comes from the blue in the country’s flag. The string lighting across the ceiling will make the diners feel as though they are outside on a street cafe in France. The design element on the back wall of the dining area is an abstract representation of a road map of France.
FRANCE
Russians have a reputation of getting together to eat and drink. This dining area is set for small groups of friends and family. The flag was represented in this area by the use of blue and red finishes in the lighting, seating, and wallcovering.

dining area is set up for a large family gathering. There is a single table set for ten. This can be a great gathering area for a family, young or old, to enjoy each others company. Finish colors were chosen based on Italy’s flag, which includes red and green. The mirror feature on the wall is to reflect the family eating to remind them how happy they are when they are surrounded by the ones they love.
ITALY
Sitting low to the ground is a traditional way of eating in Japan. On the wall of this dining area is a traditional Japanese Geisha. Geisha were entertainers and hostesses that were talented in many ancient Japanese arts. These included song and dance.

moulin
In this class, our design goal was to take an existing full service restaurant and turn it in to a nightclub that contained a stage for live shows. The new design had to pull inspiration from an assigned artist. In Moulin, the inspiration was Henri Toulouse Lautrec.

This assignment introduced AutoDesk Revit to the curriculum. All of the basics of the program were covered by following tutorials to recreate the existing restaurant. Custom, parametric families were made to create many objects for the initial model. The next step in the course was to recreate the restaurant into a nightclub. This is when many new Revit techniques were used. For example, in Moulin, almost every element was created as a model-in-place component. This means that the way the item was built is the way it will be in every instance, unlike a family it is not parametric. Different lighting techniques taught in this class and were also used in the nightclub. Magenta studio lights were used throughout the space to give it more of a nightclub atmosphere.

Color Selections
Vendor Interaction
Material Library Maintenance
One of the main tasks at this internship was to help prepare specification manuals. When final material and furniture selections were made, specifications were started for each project. Once all the contractors were selected for the project, these manuals were sent to their offices, the owner’s offices, and a copy will stay at the home office for reference. When materials are updated or changed, bulletins will be issued which will require the updated specification sheets to be distributed to the same list of recipients.
Representatives from various material and furniture companies would come to the office frequently to update our material library, discuss new products that are available, or to discuss different material options for a project the designers were working on. I would often get to sit in on these meetings, which was very beneficial to learn about the newest products that are out on the market. I would also contact these representatives for product information and to order samples for multiple projects.
INTERNSHIP
Specification Manuals
There were a few times I was able to help choose a material for certain projects. This was one of the most exciting duties because the material to be selected had to match the set color palette of the rest of the project. It was sometimes difficult to find a material that worked well with the materials that were already chosen. There were also times where a certain product was no longer available so an alternate that had the same feel as the original had to be found. This was one of the most enjoyable tasks of the internship.
In the beginning of the internship, I was mainly in the material library. I would help maintain the library by filing away pulled materials, new materials, and getting rid of old materials. I also spent a great deal of time rearranging the library to maximize space and organization. This task was enjoyable because I was able to be exposed to all different types of materials. I learned a lot from looking at company brochures and binders that were filed in the library shelves.
