APPLICATION FOR INTERNSHIP

and some stuff I’ve learned about design engineering and service design since 2010

JULY 2015

HELLO

I would love to be a part of your team and get to know you even better. Accordingly, I send this application for an internship, as I hope you’ll also be able to see the potential in having me as a part of your team. I’m a happy Dane and excited about (almost) being a design engineer. I’m enthusiastic about solving human-centered design challenges - which covers almost everything; it’s just a question of perspective and mind-set. I believe in winning through fast learning cycles, prototypes and user testing where my main driver is to see an actual change for the users or client concerned. I entered The Technical University of Denmark, DTU, in 2010 majoring Design and Innovation, subsequent I enrolled the master programme. I consider it as a natural next step for me to explore the industry before I commence my master thesis in February 2016. Further I believe this is a great opportunity to demonstrate my skills and bridging the academic theory with practice of the industry. For you this means… You’ll get a curious and dedicated intern and co-worker who is commitment to learn and contribute both academically and personally. Further you’ll have the opportunity to initiate cooperation with DTU section of Engineering Design and Product Development, in order to take part in the latest scientific research within product/service-systems. You’ll get an intern who has an international mindset benefitting from several stays abroad and working with colleagues representing various cultures and nationalities from my work placement in the UN in New York City. Finally I have attached my resume, project examples and recommendations and finally my grades so far. This application solely contains project examples conducted at DTU. Please enjoy, Katrine Buur Olsen, July 2015

RANDOM FACTS I climbed Kilimanjaro in 2010 I saw the sunrise from the summit of Mount Kenya on my 20-years old birthday I did ballet classes in New York City Did two half-marathons in one month I have used glasses since the age of 5 My last boarding pass said AAL-CPH I would love to have a dog called Lise I’m going to be paternal aunt this August.

ABOUT THE APPLICANT "I have seen that Katrine is able to cope with complex assignments, through her systematic and analytical approach. Furthermore she has displayed a good ability to conceptualise and to synthesise detailed design solutions" Tim McAloone, Professor, section of Engineering Design and Product Development. DTU “Her impressive critical thinking, analytical and communication skills were of high value for detecting systematic bottlenecks and designing solutions. I am particular impressed with her ability to think 'outside the box' and synthesize ideas from a variaety of fields, as well as with her aptitude to learn fast and fit in well with divergent groups of stakeholders Dmitri Davydov, Coordinator, Vaccine Delivery Systems UNICEF HQ, New York

My name is Katrine, I love to ask questions and solve puzzles. I grew up in the northern part of Sealand. After spending 5 months in East Africa I moved to Copenhagen, which have been my home for the past 5 years. I recently moved to Frederiksberg, a beautiful part of Copenhagen, and a neighborhood I love to explore when I go for a run. I love the city as the diversity allows me to explore different cultures, places, restaurants and music experiences. This is often done accompanied by my boyfriend Anders. Yet I also enjoy spending a nice ride on my bike visiting my parents. At the moment there are two subjects in particular that have caught my interest; Portable power/power banks where I see a strong linkage to mobile workspaces. The demand for being online and accessible has increased significantly regardless of your location or if you are on the move. The other subject is Data visualization, where I see great the potential in both visualization of empirical data and the interaction between user and product to make the experience as intuitive and inherent as possible.

YOUR LOCAL

A PLATFORM FOR ALL YOUR DISCOUNT CARDS

When January 2015 My role Application architecture, UX, Graphical interfaces

Why

Discount cards often comes as small physical cards sized as a business card. Sometimes you forget the card at home or you forget that you actually have a card for a specific venue. It’s not easy to keep track on physical papers in a digital world. "Your Local" seeks to connect the discount service offered by shops nearby with the users smartphones and smart watches.

What

Benefitting from GPS and NFC in both watch and phone allow the user to pay with either of these. If a discount card is available at the shop, it will automatically be downloaded and managed. From the smartphone you can access active discount cards and see the current status on each of them.

The Right side demonstrates a excerpt of the flow of the application. A,B,C represent different scenarios.

SONO ULTRASOUND

A WIRELESS, TABLET ENABLED ULTRASOUND SYSTEM FOR DELVELOPING COUNTRIES

When Fall 2014 My role Interviews, concept development & prototyping

Why

Soon wireless ultrasound systems will be a reality, therefore BK Medical wants to be aware of the opportunities that follows this technology push. Every day, approximately 800 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. 99% of all maternal deaths occur in developing countries, where the mortality is higher in women living in rural areas.

What

Benefiting from a wireless probe and an application compatible with most tablets allow outreach in remote communities without reliable power. The tablet and the probe will be connected through bluetooth, letting the doctor to bring multiple probes. The quality of the transmitted picture will be sufficient for midwives, doctors and nurses for most assessments related to pregnancy. The system is inexpensive and can further function as a stepping stone for initiate tele-medicine.

WORKSPACE AT DELTA AN OPEN OFFICE EMBRACING THE SOCIAL DIVERSITY.

When Spring 2012 My role Field research, concept development & prototyping

Why

Open office spaces have benefits and disadvantages. At IdemoLab in Delta the employees found it difficult to focus, why they often worked from home. Due to this structure, the colleagues did not have much interaction with each other and did not benefit from the budding energy from their co-workers as intended.

What

The employees’ expectations to an open office space were mapped through Lego-models and ranking of different needs. This resulted in a combined concept consisting of: Headphones provided by Delta, a shared calendar and a platform for internal use, where they could upload pictures to help them start conversations across the office and finally new interior decoration to make the office more inviting atmosphere.

”I’m already sitting in a nice clean and clear office. Including a high table in center, a new cabinet etc. In that case your hard work have already had a clear impact.” - Head of IdemoLab

EXPLORE BY BIKE A BIKE SHARE SYSTEM TARGETING TOURISTS IN THE SUBURBS

When Spring 2015 My role Client need mapping, Concept-

development and client material

Why

One year ago a high tech city bike is introduced in city center. However the start is far from successful. A thorough assessment of the ideal location, software and target group may change the public view of the bike.

What

The bike targets tourists and encourage them to explore the attractions of Lyngby by bike due to transparent pricing and suggested routes. Mobile docking stations will enable more flexible use depending on season and special events. During the off-season these docks can be safely stored. The concept also covers a visual identity, in order to ensure ease of recognition of bikes and docks when placed around the municipality. Finally the bike share serves as a part of the local tourism strategy.

LET TECHNOLOGY GUIDE YOU Benefiting from build in Wi-Fi, GPS and NFC the bike offers you and various opportunities and features. Real time updates of how many bikes available in the docks, paying by NFC and information about different venues you passes during your ride allowing you to learn about local history and legends. Dyrehavsbakken The worlds oldest amusement park

Founded in 1583, Bakken, or Dyrehavsbakken as it is officially named, has been a firm favorite with the people of Copenhagen for centuries. With a unique position in the middle of one of Denmark’s most beautiful woods, it is like encountering a surprise in the middle of the greenery. Because of its historic value and unique location, no big brands are allowed to set up stands at Bakken and neon signs are banned. Instead a jumble of colourful wooden structures, small independent shop owners and quirky stalls meets visitors.

For the kid (in all of us)

Still, the main attraction for most is the park’s many fun rides, including an 82-year-old wooden rollercoaster. In total, the park presents a choice of 33 rides for all ages and levels of trill seekers as well as 78 other attractions such as shooting stalls, gaming arcades and much more.

Grown-up fun

You will find a wide variety of restaurants, ice cream parlours and fastfood shops. Though the popular, traditional Danish kitchen is still richly represented newer additions include Spanish tapas, fish and chips, noodles and much more.

PORTABLE SPEAKER A TRUE BUDDIE FOR ANY OCCASION

When Spring 2015 My role Design, development & prototyping Why

This product should capture the same simple Scandinavian look and targets to match Libratone product portfolio. Libratone is a young Danish audio company providing excellent sound experiences through their product range. The design brief was to create a truly portable speaker, which you can bring wherever you go.

What

A bluetooth enabled speaker that runs on batteries. Equipped with a flexible full-grain leather strap that allows you carry the speaker as a cross-over. The strap can be removed only leaving discrete recesses, if you want to use it indoor as well as supplement to the rest of the libratone family. The speaker has various covers, to match your mood and personality.

THINK. BUILD. REPEAT.

VACCINE DISTRIBUTION

NFORMATION SHARE SYSTEM FOR IN-COUNTRY DISTRIBUTION IN COOPERATION WITH UNICEF HQ

When Spring 2013 My role Field research, concept developing and visuals

Why

The practice of cold chain logistics related to vaccine distribution handles vaccines from the manufacturers to the immunization point. However many shift in ownership and responsibility occurs which complicates the traceability significantly. Unutilised vaccines are lost due to exceeded expiry date and exposure to heat. Each year UNICEF procures vaccines for more than one billion dollars.

What

In order to gather real time data directly from the field a GMS-enabled solution is the preferred choice. The health worker will provide the necessary data by using mobile phones. The system will further initiate actions through the phone by pushing messages for the health worker. The solution works as a stepping stone for further implementation of barcodes.

Empirical data was gathered through field trips in Denmark, Brussels as well as Tanzania. Subsequent the data was analyzed and structured in order to benefit the conceptual stage.

SCENARIO: Vaccines Arival Reporting

Inform health worker in advance

The vaccines are delivered

Most facilities are equipped with back up generators in case of power cut, also enabling the helath worker to charge the phone in case of low battery

The health worker register the box ID and confirms the content

The registration is saved in the system
