WHAT TO DO IN AN EMERGENCY: If you see your friends or other kids playing around oilfield or gas equipment:  Stay calm and tell your parents, a teacher, or nearby adult.  Do NOT get close to the danger  If there is no help, find a phone and dial 911.  Tell the operator where you are and what the emergency is.  Tell them if you or anyone else is hurt.  Do not hang up until told.

Pipes like these have oil or gas flowing through them. These pipes are inspected for leaks, but they can be dangerous. Oil and natural gas are flammable, meaning they can catch fire or explode around things like camp fires, lighters, matches, and cigarettes.

Never smoke or use matches near oil and gas equipment!

This is a Pumping Jack Looks a little like a horse, doesn’t it? It’s NOT. And you should NEVER play around such equipment. These units can be up to 40 feet high and weigh up to 60,000 pounds.

If you climb on this and fall, you are in extreme danger!

Many of these Pumps are set on an automatic timer. It may look like it doesn't work, but it may surprise you and come on at any time.

It is really important to stay away from this powerful machinery.

Oil well sites sometimes possess toxic spills, vapor clouds and gases. They may not be there when you arrive but when you touch things or open doors, the gas escapes. You will not be able to see or smell these gases, but they can be deadly.

Playing at a well site could start a fire, without meaning to do harm.

Sparks or static from the fence or any metal object can ignite dangerous gases and vapors. You can be burned from the flames or possible explosion.

Explosions can harm you even if you are not on the well site. That is why you should never play near oil field equipment.

Other Safety Notes : Cell phones should not be used near oil or gas equipment (this includes when you are getting gas in your car). Static can cause sparks that can cause an explosion.

When oil is pumped out of the ground, "drilling mud" is needed. At each site a big pit is dug out and lined with plastic. This is called a Slush Pit because the mud has a lot of water. It also has a lot of other waste mixed in it and may be like quicksand.

Sometimes, it becomes necessary to burn off excess fluids, which consist of gases and other petroleum products. If you fall into one of these pits, you can drown in the slush or become badly burned if fire breaks out.
