The Coastal Prairie Partnership and Native Prairies Association of Texas - Houston Chapter (HNPAT) would like to invite you to a year of learning about and enjoying Houston’s Heartland - the Coastal Prairie. RESTORATION + MONITORING ★ Restoration Round-up - July 26, 2013 @ The Nature Conservancy’s Texas City Preserve A day of hands-on activities focused on practical, on-the-ground restoration of prairies on the upper Texas coast. Fee $50.00 ★ Prairie Hunters Training with Dr. John Jacob - August 14 and 17, 2013 Learn how to read native landscapes through time using Google Earth and other tools. This training will be the foundation of becoming a Prairie Hunter - a citizen-scientist helping to map prairie remnants in our area. Class on August 14 to be followed by field trip on August 17.
GROWING NATIVE PRAIRIE PLANTS ★ 9 Natives Challenge - kicks off on March 21 @ Native Plant Society of Texas meeting Contest to design a prairie for urban applications using just nine native plants. Winners announced in at May 22, 2013 HNPAT meeting. ★ Growing Prairie Plants with Tom Solomon - May 8, 2013 from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm Learn plant propagation techniques from award-winning Master Gardner and Naturalist Tom Solomon.
TEACHING THE PRAIRIE ★ Prairie 101 for Texas Master Naturalists - June 8, 2013 from 10 am - 2 pm Sheldon Lake State Park & Enviromental Center Learn effective techniques for teaching guests, other volunteers, and the general public about the prairie. Advanced training credits available.
FIELD TRIPS ★ Deer Park Prairie - March 23, 2013 from 9:00 am - 10:30 am Tour of the unrivaled Deer Park Prairie ★ Space Chickens - April 11, 2013 @ NASA; time TBD Tour of Attwater’s Prairie Chicken breeding facilities at NASA’s Johnson Space Center. ★ Prairie’s of East Texas - September 21, 2013; time TBD Tour of rare East Texas prairies with NPAT’s Executive Director and trained biologist Pat Merkord ★ Birds + Blooms on the Katy Prairie - October 26, 2013 Discover the intricate connections between prairie plants and birdlife.
