Dodecahedron Lamp: Architectural Graphics Skill (Summer 2017) This portfolio is a cumulation of my work across the first six semesters of architecture. These projects have varying sense of scale and approach towards the making of design. It reflects the decisions taken and questions asked across the initial journey of the architecture field.

01 Hi d e - away Know le dge Ce ntre Institution Project Project year : Semester V Location : C. N. Vidhyalaya, Ahmedabad The institutional studio is formulated around the base of exploring various approaches, ideologies, intentions, theories and visions related to the site as a context as well as the notion of an institute. The role of the architect is also to arrive at programmatic and architectural positions, where it can serve the larger context of the city as well as define the collective spirit of an institute. The studio explores these visions and philosophies/ ideologies, through arriving at a set of inferences for a synthesized architectural and spatial expression, with tangible space making aspects of organization, structure, material, scales, light and volumes.

The project of an institution built on the basis of a close relationship with nature and environment. C.N. Vidhyalaya has very rich green landscape and all the existing buildings were maximum upto two storeys. My idea was to design a building which blended in with the environment and did not overpower the existing fabric. So instead of staggering the floors upwards, i thought of building underground. The aim was to create an experience of peace and quietness. The idea was to build all the reading spaces underground, so one can hide from the rest of the world and be in one’s own peace. The biggest challenge of going underground was bringing in light and ventilation to make the space more functionable. There is a transition of levels to bring in maximum light. These levels are designed to bring in the south-west winds which would keep the underground spaces cool and well ventilated all the time. I tried to design a modern concept in a natural setting. Creating spaces along the lines of Gandhian principles on which C.N. Vidhyalaya is developed and not losing the heritage of C.N. as an institute.

02 Wo r k i ng Draw ing Institution Project Project year : Semester VI Location : C. N. Vidhyalaya, Ahmedabad The studio was about developing a set of working drawings for an Institution project. It was focused on the execution part with practicality. It was based on the learning of how different materials come together.
Detail model of a glass sloping roof alon channel and a plant
The basic set included wall section model, detail models, level plans, sections, elevations and detailed drawings of bathroom, kitchen and toilet along with electrical and flooring layouts. Other important drawings included staircase details and door and window schedules. The studio provided with the knowledge of usage and joineries at junctions where the material changes. We also learn the importance and necessity of each and every minute dimensions and labelling in a drawing. Also how the execution relies so much on details.

03 Ba n a ra s Housing Housing Project Project year : Semester IV Location : Banaras, Uttar Pradesh The site is situated in Banaras near the banks of the holy river ganga at a distance of 700 metres. The studio followed a process of studying and interpreting spaces and context, and ended with a responsive design. The context of the site included sweet shops, saree shops, markets, medical stores, schools and temples. There was very little vegetation around the site. The process included understanding the concepts of courtyards, terraces and balconies and narrow streets. The program was to design a mass housing scheme for the user groups of vaishnava community in Banaras. The houses designs were of 45 sq. m, 78 sq. m and 110 sq. m.

Material Studio Project year : Semester III Location : Old City, Ahmedabad A very irregular shaped site with a lot of trees was given to the students. The site was located right in the middle of the old city. The site held a very special heritage character. It was located within a walking distance of Teen Darwaza and Jama-Masjid- two of the most valued heritage locations in Ahmedabad city.
Section DD’
The studio looks closely at the relationship between material, structure and form. It’s aimed at exploring the significance of material, structure and form in the making of architecture. Mud was the material that was selected to design the Heritage Cell. The exercise was to design a single module from that material. By repetition of that module, the entire building was designed.

Visitor’s Center Project year : Semester II Location : Gopnath Temple, Bhavnagar The site is located at the coast of Gulf of Khambhat in Bhavnagar. It was set against a background of natural terrain, edging the Arabian sea. It was a major tourist spot because of the Gopnath temple 50 metres away. The exercise was to design a Visitor’s Centre to attract more tourists.
Section
The studio focused on the study of Elements of Space Making ( floor, wall, openings, stair and roofs ).

01 Origam i Project year : Semester V Location : C. N. Vidhyalaya, Ahmedabad Design params : Levels and Lights and shadows Selected Origami The Origami exercise was introduced right before the Institution project as a base to understand forms and spaces. It was a time problem for around 2 weeks where a student had to build an exhibition space or a gathering space from a form that came up while exploring paper folds. Students were asked to make various options of origami. Later after choosing one of them, the exercise was to either simplify or complexify the form and design it into a useful space.

aps forming different spaces.
After trying out various forms, this was the origami that I selected. For simplifying the form, i converted the lower 4 flaps into frames. This helped me play with light and shadow during different times of the day. For the upper 4 flaps, I positioned each flap at a different level. Each of them worked as a different space. Flap 1 : It worked as steps to climb up the form. Flap 2 : I turned over the flap and created a shaded gathering space. Flap 3 : As this structure was located right across the cricket ground, the third flap was an open auditorium for the spectators. Flap 4 : It formed a flat stage which worked as a complementing space in accordance to the shaded gathering space.

Related Study Programme conducted at the end of the semester is about studying vernacular architecture of a place. One such was about “The city of temples, Varanasi”. 500 years old houses were studied, documented and measure drawn by us. The city of Banaras sets on the Ghats of river ganga. The streets of the old city were just 2-2.5 m wide, where hardly a two wheeler can pass through. Due to this the balconies on above floors were very close. Residents would sit there and chat Ladies would sit there and work while chatting with their neighbours.
