WHY DESIGN FOR IMPACT? When we take action together, we can do more than when we act alone. We can change the policies and cultural practices that hold girls back – practices like child marriage and domestic slavery. If we coordinate around a shared agenda, your local action can drive a global movement and provide more resources to organizations that help girls rise. This can only happen if you design for impact!
START BY PICKING YOUR IMPACT GOAL We’ve identified three shared goals to coordinate a global movement. Pick your impact goal, and make sure to report back so we can share your success with the world.
SHARE HER STORY Fuel the movement.
INVEST IN HER Raise money to support global initiatives.
STAND WITH HER Find local opportunities to create impact.
Get more people to understand that educating girls is a powerful investment. Inspire them to take action. As more people push to change the status quo, this is how we create global visibility and push policy leaders to act. How many people will you reach?
Provide more funding to those organizations that are working to improve the lives of girls and, as a result, more girls will have opportunities for success. We suggest fundraising for the Girl Rising Fund, but if you have a local organization you support, that’s great too! How much will you raise?
We know the barriers girls face vary from place to place. If you want to create targeted local change, we suggest that you use the Girl Declaration as a guide. And make sure to share your experience with us, so we can share it with the world. What will you do?
EXAMPLE GOAL I want 300 people to learn about the power of girls’ education. I want 50% of them to bring Girl Rising to their communities.
EXAMPLE GOAL I want to raise $6000 for the Girl Rising Fund.
EXAMPLE GOAL I want my company to provide coding workshops and mentoring to local, female high-school students.
FOLLOW THESE STEPS TO PLAN FOR IMPACT There are many opportunities to incorporate impact throughout the planning process. Here are our top five: 1. SET YOUR IMPACT GOAL Be intentional with how you plan to drive impact. Referencing our shared goals, what will you do? Share her story and fuel the movement? Invest in her and raise money? Or do something locally? Be specific and pick something that excites you! 2. PICK A ‘CALL-TO-ACTION’ This is the specific action you ask attendees to take after the event. Planning a strong call-to-action is the best way to extend the impact beyond that day. Check out these suggested calls to action. 3. BUILD LOCAL VISIBILITY Getting the word out about your event doesn’t just promote attendance - it builds important visibility for the girls’ education movement. Think about how you can generate more publicity and get people talking about the issue. See our promotional tips and tricks.
4. THINK ABOUT HOW TO INSPIRE What we’ve seen, time and time again, is the power of storytelling to change minds and inspire action. There are many ways to do this: a moving film, compelling discussion, powerful images, or a stellar keynote speaker. Think about how you can make the case to your guests, and help them not only know it’s’ the right thing to do, but to feel it, too. See some event ideas here.
5. REPORT BACK This is critical. We’ll use your stories to tell global leaders that people everywhere are taking action, and so should they. Make sure to register your event, share event stories, and complete the post-event impact survey. Share your event and create a ripple effect.
EVENT EXAMPLES INSPIRED BY GIRL POWER GOAL: Stand with her: find local opportunities to create impact. OVERVIEW: The global non-profit organization, Worldreader, hosted an International Day of the Girl 2012 event dedicated to the education and motivation of students in Sub-Saharan Africa. The non-profit and FC Barcelona (the national champion women’s futbol team) collaborated, and using educational technology, gave 200 Ghanaian students e-readers with #Basicmath placards. The placards were screensavers of female athletes who had completed the equation “Girls + Education =____” with what educating girls meant to them. Worldreader included the placards as visual inspiration during the commemoration of International Day of the Girl to remind students of the possibilities their futures held. OUTCOME: For Nadja Borovac, Worldreader’s marketing director, this collaboration will have a lasting impact on the students – “By providing them with information about their own culture and other cultures, we’ll help break barriers that can one day motivate them to become leaders.” To date, Worldreader has provided 662,000 digital books to more than 13,000 children and their families.
INSPIRING ACTION THROUGH MUSIC GOAL: Share her story: fuel the movement. OVERVIEW: On May 12, seven fourth and fifth-grade girls from Glenview Elementary School in Oakland California set up as a mini-orchestra in the Rockridge BART station to help raise money for the Girl Rising Fund for Girls’ Education. After seeing the film, they felt inspired to band together to do something more to help girls like those featured in the film. Their small orchestra had recently opened for the Oakland East Bay Symphony, and they decided to unite again to use their collective talent to simultaneously spread the word about the film, Girl Rising, and to take action by raising funds for Girls’ Education. OUTCOME: The collective team of Glenview Girls raised an incredible $1,200 to contribute toward the fund. Most importantly, they used their passion for the Girl Rising campaign goals and the film to generate buzz around the issue of girls’ education and to encourage passersby to see the film and learn about why educating girls matters.
TEAMING UP FOR GIRLS GOAL: Invest in her. Raise money to support global initiatives. OVERVIEW: Inspired by the stories shared in Girl Rising, the 50 athletes of the Full Package girls elite basketball club are partnering with Girl Up, a campaign of the United Nations Fund, to help combat child marriage in Malawi. With hopes of raising an impressive $30,000, the team members are branching out locally to take advantage of fundraising opportunities. After experiencing a welcoming reception greeting customers outside of a local food center, the girls have begun planning more events. A few projects in the works include throwing a Girl Rising screening party, personal fundraisers, and a three-on-three basketball tournament in which players collect pledges for each point scored. Team member Becca Napoli discussed the initiative by stating, “We’re not just helping a couple girls. We’re going to help a lot of people.” OUTCOME: $30,000 collected from the Full Package girls elite basketball club and Girl Up partnership will give three women in Malawi the tools to help educate and inspire up to 40 girls each. The group has also helped in increasing pressure on the Malawian government to raise the marriage age to 18 – no cases of child marriage have been reported since formal adoption of the law six months ago.
