Taylor Creek is one of the best places at the lake to fly fish. It's also one of the best places to see the Tahoe area's bears as they do their own fishing for Kokanee Salmon that spawn in the creek. Each year the Taylor Creek Visitor Center holds a fall Kokanee Salmon festival for families.
Hot Tip: The Taylor Creek Visitor Center sometimes offers fly fishing classes. Directions The fishing area is located off Highway 89 in South Lake Tahoe near Camp Richardson. Caples Lake in the Mokelumne Wilderness near Highway 88 lies the large Caples Lake. This fully stocked lake is known for its great boat and float tube fishing. Hot Tip: The area near the spillway and dam is one of the best places to fish on Caples. Directions: From South Lake Tahoe take Highway 89 south through Meyers to Highway 88. Truckee River The Truckee River meanders along Interstate 80 on its way to the desert. In between Reno and Tahoe are hundreds of places to drop your bait into the water. Parking is limited in some areas, but there are some pullouts off the Eastbound part of the highway. These include areas near Farad, Floriston and Mystic Road. Keep an eye out for other cars parked on the side of the road, they are most likely fishing down in the canyons created by the river. Hot Tip: There are some deep pools in this part of the Truckee where fish like to hang out.
Directions: From Truckee, take Highway 89 to Interstate 80 and head toward Reno.
Donner Lake is located a few miles west of Truckee on the North Shore and offers small boat and kayak fishing for Rainbow, Brook and Brown Trout. This lake is beautiful, but different from Tahoe. It's not as blue and can get breezy, but the views are stunning. Hot Tip: Don't have a boat? No problem, you can fish right off the free, public piers on the North Shore of the lake. Directions: From old downtown Truckee, take the Lincoln Highway west to Donner Lake. The free piers are on the north side of the lake.
Upper Truckee River As one of the best places to go fishing in South Lake Tahoe, the Upper Truckee River near Highway 50 has great access to Rainbow and Brown Trout and it tends to stay fairly quiet and private in this part of the river. This tributary of Lake Tahoe is close to the Tahoe Keys and offers some great river fishing along with views of the lake. Hot Tip: This part of the river opens for fishing in mid-summer. Directions: From the Tahoe Keys you can walk east to the Upper Truckee.
