THE ARBOR Mixed-Use Mid-Rise affordable housing for Friends of Trees non-profit PORTLAND, OR

FRIENDS OF TREES OFFICE FROM MLK BLVD

This project is five stories of affordable apartments over a ground level hosting Friends of Trees offices and other leasable space. Friends of Trees brings people together to strengthen ecosystems and human connections around the city. The Arbor aims to embody this spirit. It focuses on community and on maintaining not only a connection to nature, but a reminder of the ecosystems around us.

Adaptable and Universal Design Individuals use spaces in different ways, and have different requirements for ideal living spaces. For example, some people can’t reach high places, while others have difficulty bending down. Adaptable spaces should consider many types of needs and abilities, and need to be designed for more people than just wheelchair users. All senses and aspects of the environment need to be considered.

SEVEN Kinetic operable facade, taphouse; with Dallas Gray, Hieu Vo, and Will Searcy YALETOWN, VANCOUVER, B.C.

SECTION PERSPECTIVE

This piece of kinetic architecture, a moving tap house façade, blurs the outside and in. Daily operation creates a moment and attraction for the tap house. Chairs and tables do not have to be displaced to make way for the door. In a rainy climate like Vancouver, B.C., sitting outside can be a damp experience; in it’s open position, Seven creates an awning, protecting customers from rain.

THE SUNHOUSE External living room and guest house; with Bohemian Cottages & Tiny Houses EUGENE, OR

The purpose of this project is to create a sunny space for the owners to spend time that can function as a guesthouse. It fits into its context by mimicking the main house, and appears to be part of it, even though it is a separate structure. This design responds to the hipped roof of the main building by reflecting it on its north side and opens up to the south, welcoming daylight, with operable windows placed to encourage cross-ventilation.

TARAWERA Tiny home, passive heating and cooling strategies; with Lacey Aley LAKE TARAWERA, NZ

A new tiny home off Lake Tarawera in New Zealand for a retiring New York couple, this house tests multiple passive design strategies in a small package, with ample outdoor space for activities and entertaining. This building utilizes these strategies creatively to maximize use and views. A sun space becomes a spot for morning coffee and growing plants, a combination of trombe walls and glazing allows for direct and indirect passive heating, as well as views of the lake, and a thick wall insulating from cold winds from the south is further buffered by needed outdoor storage.
