concept / inspiration The concept behind “Passion for Fashion” is that everyone can dress for success. You don’t need to be built like a model to achieve confidence and success in the workplace. All shapes, sizes, and races are equally equipped to present themselves professionally. Also, “Dress for Success” in Des Moines helps support a lot of moms with children, so I want to include that diversity into my design as well. I had the idea of the classic, sleek clean runway-New York look to highlight the idea of high fashion for the everyday. Another concept I was playing with was “revealing the new you”, a way to unveil the person you’ve always wanted to be.

illustrations The first illustration I constructed worked with the idea of the runway. It was created to be sleek, and elevate work place fashion to runway status.

My second illustration was made for women with children, since many women who are benefited by Dress for Success have children. There is a doll that can be dressed up in sleek, pretty, professional work attire.

My third illustration came from the part of my concept that was about, “revealing the new you”. With each layer of the woman’s clothes, a little more information is revealed. Although this fit my concept, it also was a little odd to peel back the layers of clothing, because it seems like an undressing of the doll.

critique During critique, the winner was number 2! Although originally my favorite was the runway, after critique I realized its shortcomings. It was pointed out that the attention is more on the pop-up runway than on the information. Also, it was hard to include the diversity I wanted to represent. The cool part about my second design was that I could include a doll that was fashioned after women not typically seen on the runway. The doll is of a minority race, and has a curvy figure. I liked that kids could relate to this figure like their mother or older sister. The design of the second illustration also allowed for information to be given more directly, in a more orderly fashion. However, it’s still fun and has interaction because of the doll and the dress up clothes.

digital sketch

Since I had already drawn my type and decided on my fonts, transferring the sketch to the computer was actually really easy! The main challenges were just deciding on scale, and refining the placement of elements.

Designing the clothing was a really fun part! I designed the doll, and digitally painted her in Photoshop, and then I used the pen tool and drew each clothing item on top of her so that it fit correctly. Then I filled in the clothes with textures and colors to make them more interesting.

envelope

^^^ I added the logo to the back flap as well as the front, for branding.

Next, it was time to begin the envelope! Originally, it was designed with a pointed flap, but I realized that it was too long for this design, so I opted for a curved flap instead. This actually worked really well, because it gave the impression of a clutch. The outfit wrapped from the front on the envelope to the back. There was a bit of trial and error, but eventually I got both sides to match up.

see you on the runway!

The idea of behind the tag was the idea that something could be taken away from the invite to easily be carried in a pocket or a purse. The clothing tag went along well with the idea of the shopping bag full of clothes. I made sure that the tag corresponded well to the bag of clothes it was paired with, so that it would look like they were meant to go together. The design is fairly simple, but I think it’s an effective take-away for the invite.

alterations Time to make changes! I fit this section of text snugly against the word “Fashion”. The space between the ascenders on the ‘F’ and the ‘h’ made a nice little frame. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Another change was that I added the sponsors to the design. At first, the logos were just smacked on there, but then I changed it to look like they were on a shopping bag. This looked much sleeker, and tied into the look of the invite much more cohesively. Also, I noticed that the back of the doll’s hands and feet needed to match the gray of the back of the card. I noticed that I needed to adjust the text here as well, since the date wasn’t aligned properly. >>>>>>>>>>>>>>

Final envelope design! With a fun polka-dot interior, and a bright pink exterior, I think this envelope is fun, playful, and inviting.

construction

Construction definitely took longer than I thought it would! First I had to cut out the envelopes, the invites, the bags, and the tags. Then I glued the envelope together and attached the bags. Next, I glued the doll and the clothes on magnetic paper, and cut them out. After that, I attached the tags with string and tape to the bags. This project involved a lot more time to finish than just pressing print. However, it was fun to see all the elements come together in the end.

fun with fashion

Time to play dress-up! Just for fun, I made some outfit combos for my little doll. Pretty cute, right?

reflection

For this project, I utilized several of the principles we’ve covered in class. I worked on creating hierarchy within the text, and establishing this hierarchy through the use of contrast. I also organized my text in a grid-like, columnar fashion that made reading the information easier. If I had more time, I think I would have liked to create more outfits! Designing these outfits was fun, and I could see a lot more mix and match items for people to play with. I really liked that this project was much more three dimensional, and challenged us to create multiple elements that interacted with each other. This also challenged me, because it wasn’t just about looking at one element, it was seeing each element as part of the whole. I didn’t always enjoy having so much to consider, but it was a good challenge. Overall, I really enjoyed this project and thought that it taught me a lot about typographic design.
