01 Urban Bath House Rhino | V-Ray | Photoshop | Illustrator | 3D Print
Selected for UTSOA Issue 013
This urban bath house is located on the top two floors and roof of the Hotel Van Zandt. The design strategy is to separate the baths and keep them united by a single form. A continuous, undulating partition divides the spaces into large, medium and small pools. The Corian surface folds to generate private pockets of space allowing intimacy in the part of the pools closest to the framework. The Corian structure also encourages a cohesive environment where people can see others soaking in nearby pools. Corian is used specifically for its high resiliency, high temperature resistance, versatility to create a desired pattern, and hygienic properties. The texture and mood of the Corian structure resembles that of a pink shell, otherwise known as a cockle shell. The ridges, reminiscent of a shell, create a grittiness and warmth that grounds the entirety of the baths and generate a texture that people can relate to. The pink cockle shell has historically stood for physical and emotional healing. In the bath house, these aspects permeate the water and invoke a healing process for as long as a bather stays engaged in the baths. Visitors have the ability to heal their bodies by using pressure showers or submerging in warm water that either emits scent, plays music, radiates light, or contains minerals. At the end of the structure there is a medium, cold bath and a large, hot bath.

02 Pantin Articulé Rhino | AutoCad | Illustrator | Photoshop
The city of Pantin (outside of Paris) is becoming similar to Superstudio’s Instant City, where temporary events take place. As a result of our research, we decided to work in scales of time (a nighttime event, a working day, a year long lease.) The project attempts to continue the character of Pantin as well as Parc de la Villette, the location of the site. The northern part of the site contains a majority of the program allowing for a vast open park on the Southern end landscaped with structures containing different programs with varying scales of times. Within the project there are fragments of leisure, culture, and work spread everywhere - our design activates the void in between each strategy. The project incorporates a field condition, an intermediary zone, and the tower. At the ground, temporary structures are implemented for culture and leisure activity. The middle zone integrates working program while the tower hosts living units. Group: Côme Rolin, Danielle Ndubisi, Josh Padilla, Kaylen Parker, Laure Mouly, Roland Fontaine

03 Socializing the Museum Rhinoceros | Illustrator | Photoshop
This project seeks to socialize the museum by redesigning the Blanton Museum of Art’s atrium space. The design transforms the institution into a more welcoming and inviting space. The existing stairs and stacked waters installation is removed and a new vertical circulation method is generated. A coffee bar and cafe is inserted into the space and housed by a large wooden structure. Each layer of the structure is rotating between wood and glass to create partial visibility into the cafe. The lower half of the structure is a simple square; in contrast, the upper half is undulating and reaching up towards the distinguishing sawtooth skylights. The layers of glass in the undulating portion of the coffee shop and cafe are infused with colors. The light from the skylight penetrates the colored glass and creates a colorful glow for guests and customers. Through a layering process, this autonomous wooden structure constructs a comfortable, friendly environment that takes advantage of light and color.

ASID One Unique Space: 1st Place
IIDA held a competition to design their booth at the Orgatec trade show using Vitra furniture. With only three hundred square feet to make a statement, a simple and elegant strategy had to be used. Design inspiration draws from an exploration of what a wall is. A single intertwining ribbon creates pockets of space within its folds. An extensive study of how that space becomes occupiable is presented here. The ribbon transforms to perform different functions as it weaves to create the booth. It is a wall graphic, it is a desk, it is a storage system, it is seating, it is privacy.

ASID Design Excellence Runner Up
The Multifaceted Showroom is an extension of the Multifaceted Booth project. The site is where the current Design Within Reach is located. The task is to create a showroom for Vitra that embodies their values and maintains their individual aesthetic. Using the same continuous ribbon technique, space is uniquely created and used. The design incorporates two elements, a ribbon and a platform. They interact and weave throughout the space allowing customers to interact with the furniture and interior simultaneously. The ribbon begins as the point of sale counter, moves up along the wall as a graphic, zigzags across the adjacent wall to form a wall of shelving, finds the floor to become a graphic again which leads the eye to where the ribbon is the stairs. On the second level, the ribbon bends to display furniture, flattens out to be a bridge, curls up and around the display more furniture, crashes down to create the second bridge and then ends as a platform for more furniture. The platform allows an entry, an artist’s studio and a manager’s office. The platform is white and the ribbon and black to appeal to a yin-yang approach where the two elements are working together to achieve an energetic and functional showroom.

06 Creative Supreme Rhino | Illustrator | Photoshop
The creative headquarters of Supreme serves to provide designers with a fresh take on the grungy skateworld. A bright and contemporary palette acts like a blank slate for new ideas. The custom furniture creates microclimates designed to facilitate different types of working styles and generate types of work. There are a couple of main elements in this space. The first, as an employee walks in to start work or a partner walks in to see updates on the projects, there is a halfpipe that shoots through the space. It guides people to the back where the workstations are located. The center atrium, filled with greenery and plenty of seating, provides one of the many places of work and respite throughout the space. The scond floor is designed as the space for creative mayhem, tables, funboxes and focus boxes litter the mezzananine.

07 The Colorado Table Non-Digital Machines | Hand Tools
The Colorado Table is a large metaphor, not only because the table itself is large (measuring in just under 6’ x 3’-6”,) but because every aspect of the design was chosen for its place in the metaphor. The oval shape is representative of a map like those shown in the likes of the Robinson Projection. The majority of this wood is White Oak and it is the “land.” The river running through it is the Colorado River outside of Austin near Hippie Hollow and Hamilton Pool. This part of the table is made of Spalted Texas Pecan and is dubbed, the “water.” The base forms a rectangle where each legs denotes a cardinal point, however, the base is entirely shifted so that there is no North, East, South, West or ordinal points. They lie somewhere in between further abstracting what can be so literally translated. This slight shift keeps anyone from sitting at head of table, “abolishing heirachy like the millenials tend to do,” my grandma pointed out.
