A r tistic Sta tement My passion for architecture lies in the design process and the journey of discover y. Through searching for my design voice , I have become interested in an architecture of place; by this I mean, architecture that is shaped by it’s context, culture , vernacular, and environment. I believe architecture is an intuit ive process as much as it is pragmatic . The poetics lie in intuition which unfolds to inform the pragmatic issues, resulting in place , context, and situation- appropriate design. Through personal design exploration, I aim to define for myself the meaning of sustainable design, and the synthesis of architecture and landscape architecture . I am interested in how these disciplines can be synthesized, and investigating what lies at the intersection. I wish to pursue how architecture can be more than a buil ding, but become of it’s place and benefit it’s environment, culture and people .

Buoy Site 20
The buoys, delicately strung from the oak limbs, gently sway in the Gulf breeze--creating a measure of both the landscape and the condition. A whistling of leaves and underbrush are accompanied by the bobbing of the interlocked series of buoys. From the top of the ridge , the buoys seem to float on top of the thick palmetto underbrush as they stretch to the back of the oak grove . A visit to t he site after Hurricane Gustav showed the sheer destructive power of hurricanes and their affect on the coast. The buoys still hung, slightly twisted as kew from the high winds--creating their own forma tion through the grove .

Chene : oak Chenier : a hummock in a marshy region, with stands of evergreen oaks. Cheniere : (Cajun French) oak grove Chenier or Chénier is a sandy or shelly beach ridge that is part of a strand plain, called a “chenier plain,” consisting of cheniers separated by intervening mud-flat deposits with marsh and swamp vegetation. Cheniers are typically 1 to 6 m high, tens of km long, hundreds of metres wide, and often wooded. Chenier plains can be tens of km wide. Cheniers and associated chenier plains are associated with shorelines characterized by generally low wave energy, low gradient, muddy shorelines, and abundant sediment supply.
Louisiana’s Chenier Plain covers a 2,200 square mile strip of land–consisting of a series of ancient, oak-lined ridges which run parallel to the coastline, and serve as habitats, riparian zones, and a buffer from storm surge. The Cheniers account for 3% of the regions total area, with the remainder being marshland. The maximum elevation of a chenier reaches a mere 10’ above sea level. The Chenier Plain and its associated wetland area accounts for 1/3 of Louisiana’s coastal marsh, and accounts for 40% of the marshland in the contiguous U.S. The marshes within the Chenier Plain cover more than 1 million acres within Cameron and Vermilion Parishes. Industry brought the onslaught of canal dredging, which causes increased salt water intrusion, leading to the loss of vital vegetation. The loss of vegetation, in combination with storm surge, subsidence and sea level rise has caused the coast line to recede. Louisiana’s Chenier Plain is projected to be completely submerged by 2100; this project investigates how to respond to these conditions. Do we embrace the change, fight it, or flea?

Current Coastline Projected Coastline (2100) By 2100, it is projected that the Chenier Plain will be completely submerged due to subsidence and sea level rise. This crucial ecological and buffer system will be lost to the Gulf of Mexico.

Within Louisiana’s Chenier Plain lies Cheniere au Tigre, home to a oncebustling community that has since been abandoned. Hurricane Audrey struck the fatal blow in 1952 that caused the end of permanent settlement. Some of the original settling families have since rebuilt camps on the island, but there are no full time residents. This chenier stands as an island in the marsh, only accesible by boat. Unlike other cheniers, Cheniere au Tigre escaped most of the effects of the oil industry, it’s focus had always been more recreational. It now stands abandoned and nearly forgotten--mostly private land.--only visited by some of the original families.

Coast Guard Tower _ Datum Reviving the once-standing Coast Guard Tower into a network across the landscape connected through floating boardwalks. The towers act as nodes within the system providing areas of respite from the marsh and water. In addition, the tower serves as a datum of change within the landscape, allowing visitors to see current and past water levels and to understand the change that is occuring. Current

‘BathHouse’ The ‘BathHouse’ design creates pockets of water, protected from the surrounding Gulf for activities such as swimming, fishing or kayaking; the infrastructure itself acts as scaffolding to faciliate camping. As the water rises, so does the structure. This preliminary idea will go on to inform creating and preserving pockets of fresh, salt, and brackish water as the sea level rises in order to preserve ecosystems and activites that take place in each of those conditions. LOUISIANA CHENIER PLAIN CURRENT COAST LINE

MORGAN CITY
: An O bs e r vator y- Me morial for Che nie re au T igre , Louis iana
Cheniere au Tigre is a sandy oak-covered ridge, or chenier; which marks an ancient beach left stranged in the marsh. Located between the Gulf of Mexico and the heel of Louisiana, this isolated region was once home to a vibrant community and culture. Today it stands nearly abandoned as the land gives way to erosion and subsidence and the sea rises. By 2100 it is projected to be completely underwater. With the vanishing landscape, a culture and way of life disappear.Yet, in it’s vulnerable state, this place is mysterious and beautiful -- transhistorical yet at the mercy of time. TERRE+EAU questions how architecture can act as a mnemonic, while creating a place to bear witness to this changing and disappearing landscape. TERRE+EAU serves as an observatory-memorial for Cheniere au Tigre. It is an observatory in that it is a place in which to witness the vanishing landscape, and a memorial in that it marks and retains the memory of the landscape and people that once called this place home.

Hall of Sound + Silence / Water + Sand The Hall of Sound + Silence is located on the western portion of the scheme; it acts as the entrance if coming via the back ridge. This zone focuses on sand and water and their constant fluctuations. The concrete Hall of Sound amplifies the sounds of the Gulf of Mexico, but limits one’s view of it until reaching the end of the hall. The enclosed nature continues the enclosure experienced along the back ridge, swapping oak canopies for concrete and wood. Slits in the walls provide light and glimpses of the landscape surrounding it. The sound of waves encourages movement through the hall, building anticipation for the expansion ahead. The Hall of Sielnce lies adjacent; it is carved between concrete and oaks, providing a quiet area of respite and reflections. Rectangular steps protrude from the floor, acting as benches in the current state, while doubling as stepping stones as the water rises.

Hall of Perseverance / Oaks + Reeds The Hall of Perseverance likes nestled between the two other zones; running parallel to the Gulf, this zone acts as the entry point if traveling along the beach. The linear nature derives from the narrow strip of beach that one walks upon to reach the site. This zone focuses on the oaks and reed grasses and the long and short changes associated with them. A concrete wall runs on the northern side, flanked by a rhythmic wood column and truss structure. The wood acts to establish a rhythm of movement and time, creating a datum and measure from which to gauge change, frame views, and filter movement.

Hall of Alignment / Concrete + Wood The Hall of Alignment lies to the east, acting as the gateway to the beach beyond. This zone is dominated by concrete and wood; it removes the occupant from the immediate site and acts to center or orient them within the universe at large. Taking cues from critical sun and moon alignments, slits are cut into the concrete walls and continued into the roof plan, framing cosmological events and moving one’s focus upward. This space focuses on slow time, capturing and aligning with the sun and moon. By removing sight into the surrounding landscape, the occupant is removed and transformed.
