BABY & YOU

Wonder Weeks – The best stress reduction for both you and your baby by Xaviera Plas

Ever wondered why your usually content baby is suddenly Cranky, Clingy and Crying? Why nothing you can do seems to help? No, it’s not teething, cramps or other most common upsets. These fussy phases are actually progress! Dr. Frans Plooij and Dr. Hetty van de Rijt found out the true reason all babies go through these fussy phases. This research could very well be the sanity saviour of every parent around the globe! Xaviera Plas, daughter of Frans and Hetty and a mother of three, gives us a sneak preview of your baby’s mind and explains these phases known as the ‘Wonder Weeks!’ Xaviera explains: “My parents first studied chimpanzees in Tanzania with Jane Goodall. They saw that chimp babies

all seem to lose certain skills they had before a whole new set of skills emerged. During this setback period they cling on to their mum, making the mum quite annoyed. This was a short period of chimp mum-baby quarrels. These fussy phases ended as suddenly as they appeared and it was only after having observed this with many chimps that they found a pattern. Chimp babies were fussy at set times and the new skills emerged at set times too. The development didn't come gradually, but in leaps. Back in Europe, my parents did the same research in human babies. Guess what? Same thing – babies’ mental development comes in leaps.

Every leap starts with a fussy phase and ends with a whole new skill set. The good news is that we can now simply calculate when these leaps are. This way the leaps babies go through aren’t a surprise anymore, we can simply calculate when they occur, based on the due date! I cannot stress this enough – the date of birth is nice for a piece of cake every year, but does not affect the mental development. Now let’s just play make believe for a second to really understand how hard these leaps are for your baby. Imagine yourself waking up on another planet. Everything you perceive is different than before. You would see things you didn't see before, you would hear things you didn't hear before, you would feel things you didn't feel

before… that would freak you out wouldn't it? Bet you would cry, be cranky and cling on to the only people you recognise – your parents. So, whenever your baby is going through one of these wonder weeks and you feel stressed, try to imagine this anecdote and understand why your baby really needs you and your comfort now. However, what if you could not only comfort him but also show him around this ‘new world he woke up on’, you could help him to master these new impressions much quicker and therefor help him and yourself through these fussy phases. The best advice I can give is – know when the leaps are and what happens in every leap. The best stress reduction for both you and your baby and as a bonus, you will stimulate your baby’s mental development in the way he deserves and literally cries to get.” I’ll try to give a short summary of each wonder week, but bear in mind that there is no year in life in which we learn more than in our first year of life. Meaning, the summary is not more than a glance into the perceptual world, as it takes many more words to really describe the fascinating development of your baby.’’

Page 9

BABY & YOU Changing sensations: 5 weeks after due date: First leap! A small one, yet important one – for the first time your baby senses things more intensely. It may look like he is born again and much more awake.

Patterns: 8 weeks after due date: Your baby doesn’t perceive the world as a single undividable entity anymore and begins to differentiate patterns. He discovers his hands and is ‘obsessed’ by looking at patterns, hearing patterns etc. Get a towel with a pattern on it and show it to him – this is a brain treat and it will help him to master this ‘new world’.

Smooth transitions: 12 weeks after due date: You’ll see your baby move smoothly, less robotic, simply because he is now able to feel a smooth transition for the first time. Doing is one thing, but he can now also hear them, see them, taste them and feel them. The airplane game is such a success because going up and down like an airplane is one big smooth transition!

Events: 19 weeks after due date: A bouncing ball, you cutting bread or brushing your hair… your baby will love to look at it. Why? Events are a combination of patterns (static positions) and smooth transitions. So every repeated action is just what a baby longs to perceive now!

Relationships: 26 weeks after due date: Almost half a year old, and for the fifth time your baby’s world changes again. Who ever said babies have it easy is way off! For the first time your baby understands concepts of ‘in’, ‘out’,

‘under’, ‘in front of’ etc. For the first time your baby understands that something can be there but is not visible. For the first time your baby understands you can enlarge the distance between you and him… triggering the separation anxiety parents talk about. It starts here, and with the right help it doesn’t need to get to that dreaded climax months later. Xaviera says, “Between that first half year and his 20th month of life your baby makes 5 more leaps, so 10 leaps between due date and 20 months after due date. The older a baby, the more complex the leaps are, the longer the fussy phases and the larger the new skill sets. The first Wonder Week is often perceived as ‘manageable’ by parents. The fourth one is dreaded by most and let's not even get onto the frustration parents feel when a baby is older. We parents have been storytelling too long – the bare reality is that being a parent is hard and sometimes even frustrating. I am so glad we now reach hundreds of thousands of parents around the globe; with our book, The Wonder Weeks – an international bestseller, with multi award winning app, Facebook community and group. Parents can read our book or eBook per leap, so it’s not a long read, as you just read about the leap that your baby is on now. Wonder Weeks provides parents with information and gives them the opportunity to share their experiences with other parents with babies of the same age, worldwide. For us this is like a dream come true, as parents around the globe, regardless of religion, skin colour or gender preference, all stand united in helping their baby in getting though these difficult Wonder Weeks!! ‘’

BABY & YOU

Introducing Solids Introducing your baby to solid foods, often called weaning on to foods, should start when your baby is around six months old. It is a really important step in your baby’s development and can be great fun to explore new flavours and textures together. To begin with, how much your baby takes is less important than getting them used to the idea of eating. They will still be getting most of their nutrition from breastmilk or infant formula. Babies don’t need three meals a day to start with, so you can start by offering foods at a time that suits you both. Gradually you’ll be able to increase the amount and variety of food your baby eats until they can eventually eat the same as the rest of the family, in smaller portions. Research shows that babies need nothing but breastmilk or infant formula for the first six months of life. This gives a baby’s digestive system time to develop so that they cope fully with solid foods. This includes solid foods made into purées and cereals mixed with milk.

Why it pays to wait until they are ready If you are breastfeeding, feeding only your milk up to around six months will give them extra protection against infection, and it will continue to protect them for as long as you carry on.

10 mybaby

Whether your baby has breast milk or infant formula, waiting until your baby is ready for food will save a lot of time too, as they will quickly be able to feed themselves and with less mess, as they will be able to swallow properly.

Three signs your baby is ready for their first food Every baby is an individual, but there are 3 clear signs which, together, show your baby is ready for solid foods alongside breastmilk or infant formula. It is very rare for these signs to appear together before your baby is six months old. 1 They can stay in a sitting position and hold their head steady. 2 They can co-ordinate their eyes, hands and mouth so that they can look at the food, pick it up and put it in their mouth, all by themselves. 3 They can swallow food. Babies who are not ready will push their food back out, so they get more round their face than they do in their mouths. Some signs that can be mistaken for a baby being ready for solid foods: l chewing fists l waking in the night when they have previously slept through l wanting extra milk feeds These are normal behaviours and not necessarily a sign of hunger, or a sign of being ready to start solid food. Starting solid foods won’t make them any more likely to sleep through the night. Extra feeds are usually enough until they’re ready for other food.

Getting Started l Stay with your baby when they are eating in case they start to choke. l Let your baby enjoy touching and holding the food. l Allow your baby to feed themselves, using their fingers, as soon as they show an interest. l Don’t force your baby, wait until the next time if they are not interested this time. l If you are using a spoon, wait for your baby to open their mouth before you offer the food. Your baby may like to hold a spoon too.

l Start by offering just a few pieces or teaspoons of food, once a day. l Cool hot food and test it before giving it to your baby. l Don’t add salt, sugar or stock cubes to your baby’s food or cooking water.

Feeding your baby from 0-6 months Breast milk or infant formula. ‘Follow-on’ formula is not suitable for babies under six months, you don’t need to introduce it after six months either. Introducing solid foods before six months: if after checking with your health visitor or doctor, you decide to introduce solid foods before six months, you should avoid giving your baby certain foods as they may cause food allergies or make your baby ill. These include foods that contain wheat, gluten, nuts, peanuts, peanut products, seeds, liver, eggs, fish, shellfish, cows’ milk and soft or unpasteurised cheese.

Baby Food from 6-8 months Your baby’s first foods can include mashed or soft cooked fruit and vegetables like parsnip, potato, yam, sweet potato, carrot, apple or pear, all cooled before eating. Or soft fruit like peach, melon, soft ripe banana or avocado as finger foods or mashed. Or baby rice or baby cereal mixed with your baby’s usual milk. Keep feeding them breast milk or infant formula as well but don’t give them whole cows’ milk as a drink until they are a year old. Next foods – soft cooked meat such as chicken, mashed fish (check very carefully for any bones), pasta, noodles, toast, pieces of chapatti, lentils, rice and mashed hard boiled eggs. Also full-fat dairy products such as yoghurt, fromage frais or custard (choose products with no added sugar or less sugar). Whole cows’ milk can be used in cooking or mixed with food from six months. Nutribaby: A Kitchen Genie for Babyhood and Beyond

Approaching weaning the Baby-Led way Nutritionist and Baby-Led Weaning expert, Julie Clark talks us through the basics.

What is Baby-Led Weaning? Essentially, Baby-Led Weaning means allowing your baby to feed themselves normal foods from the age of six months.

The award-winning Nutribaby from Babymoov is a true kitchen genie catering for the early stages of a child’s development, from the moment baby is born, through weaning and beyond! Use as a bottle warmer and steriliser in the early months and when baby’s ready for weaning, the Nutribaby steam cooks and purees food for added freshness. With nutrient preservation at the heart of its design, this unique 5in-1 processor adapts to the needs of the whole family, with enough cooking and blending capacity to whip-up a feast for a small tribe! Through the aid of the easy-touse LCD digital timer, removable cooking baskets and useful ‘nooks’ to cook eggs, parents can

set the correct time and cook a variety of foods separately in the two baskets to feed children of varying stages of development with relative ease; steam cook a fillet of fish, whilst cooking vegetables for baby and a boiled egg for an older child. Once the cooking is complete, the Nutribaby conveniently detaches to become a handy family blender, where the innovative juice recovery tray enables parents to alter the consistency of purees, preserving those all-important vitamins and minerals! The Nutribaby is easy to clean, FREE from BPA and comes with a lifetime guarantee, making it the ultimate multi-tasking baby essential that parents really won’t want to be without!

You do not need to spoon feed or prepare pureed food at this age as your baby will naturally be able to pick food up and feed themselves. There are many advantages to allowing your baby to feed this way, including a proven reduced risk of obesity, better social skills and improved motor skills.

How do I get started? From six months you can start by giving them a little food at each main meal. They will only be able to use their fists at this stage so food shaped like a chip is perfect, or food that will stick to a spoon. Let your baby play with the food and continue with your baby’s usual milk feeds. You will be amazed by how much your baby is able to eat themselves after just a few weeks.

Is there anything else I need to know? It can get messy! But it can also be so rewarding to see your baby happily feeding themselves nutritious home-cooked foods and your baby will love joining in with family mealtimes. If you’d like to find out more about Baby-Led Weaning, Julie’s book Baby-Led Weaning Step by Step is the UK’s first handbook which takes readers through the process month on month and is available to buy from Amazon and in all good book shops. Visit www.spring-nutrition.co.uk for more information.

Tips for Greener Parenting There is no denying that having a baby is demanding on the environment – new babies have many needs, food, clothes, nappies, nursery products, to name but a few, BUT being green doesn’t have to be overwhelming!

Here are a few steps that you can take to make family life greener – even if you only do a few of them it is a move in the right direction.

Breastfeeding Some Mums want to breastfeed because they’re convinced – rightly – that it’s the way to give their baby the healthiest start in life. Another way to look at it is that it’s the most natural and straightforward way to look after your child in the first few months. 100 percent safe and clean – and you’ll be happy your baby is getting 100 percent of the nutrition needed and NOTHING else!

Recycling Recycling is an excellent way of saving energy and conserving the environment. Before you throw something away, think about if someone else might need it. Donate usable furniture and clothes to charity shops, schools, community centres, friends and neighbours. Find out more about recycling by visiting www.recyclingguide.org.uk

Hang Dry Make the most of dry days by giving your tumble drier a break. Get a clothesline or rack to dry your clothes by the air. Your wardrobe will maintain colour and fit, and you'll save money.

Choose Organic Organic is good for you and your planet, is kind to animals and wildlife, and allows us to make a big difference – simply through the way we shop. With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why organic delivers such good value for money. To find out how to make the right organic choices visit www.soilassociation.org.

What is the Nordic Swan Eco-Label? One of the most important things to any parent is making sure their baby is safe, secure and comfortable. This also means protecting their delicate skin from hidden harsh ingredients found in some baby products. Most products claim to be ‘the Best’ for your baby, but how do you really know? The Nordic Swan Eco-label can help you make an informed decision about what products to use.

Abena’s commitment to supplying parents with gentle products with the added bonus of caring for the environment, so you know you are doing your bit towards preserving the planet for your children’s and their children’s future.

The Nordic Swan Eco-label was created in 1989 with the purpose of providing an environmental labelling system informing you that any company using this label must be environmentally focused and adheres to strict criteria. The Nordic Swan Eco-label is your guarantee that products have been manufactured with care and consideration for the environment, showing you that the product does not have ingredients such as perfumes, lotions, flame retardants, PVC or other ingredients, for example, parabens that can be harmful to skin. Bambo Nature Nappies, Training Pants and Baby Wipes have all been awarded the Nordic Swan Eco-label, as well as being dermatologically tested, and are evidence of

5 Tips that make buying gifts for kids child’s play Buying gifts and toys for children can be trickier than it sounds. Children grow and their tastes change quickly – so how do you find a gift that will stand the test of time and keep their interest long beyond Christmas day. When you are buying a gift for a child here are 5 things to bear in mind…

1

can be taken apart and put back together again or that involve creating shapes or models that will grow with your child and provide hours of fun. Lego or sticky bricks, cookery sets and craft kits are good examples of creative gifts that have stood the test of time.

Consider toys that encourage creativity, such as toys that

2

Good toys allow children to use their imagination rather than directing how they play – dolls, playhouses and cars are good examples of toys that will spark their imagination and provide a platform for play.

3

4

It’s good for a child to be able to entertain themselves but equally important for them to be able to play with others, share and understand the rules of game play. A game that they can play with other children or their parents such as a board or card game, will challenge them and encourage social interaction. Avoid gimmicks and toys that are too complex – simplicity

allows the child to use their own imagination and avoids the frustration that comes with over complicated gadgets and gizmos.

5

If you have children of a similar age, you could ask them what their favourite gifts are or ask friends or relatives for suggestions. But, before you head for the shops check out our selection of fabulous gift ideas for tots.

They found the treasure – can you? Watch your little ones delight in hours of treasurehunting magic with 5 star rated treasure hunt game, Gotrovo! Perfect for play-dates, parties, or special one-to-one time, it’s the stuff memories are made of. You could even lay a trail to the Christmas presents! GUILT FREE

Guilt Free Gifts It seems strange to use the word ‘gift’ and ‘guilt’ in the same sentence, after all gift giving is a way of expressing your gratitude, recognition and appreciation for someone special. But, when we buy a gift – isn’t it our duty to think about how and where it was made? The highstreet is full of mass produced items, cheaply made abroad with little consideration given to environmental and ethical issues. Some workers (sometimes children) labour for 12-14 hours a day, 7 days a week, for very little money. Working conditions can be miserable and sometimes even dangerous. However this doesn’t have to be, there are plenty of gift options around that you don’t have to feel guilty about.

Fairtrade Buy a Fairtrade gift and you will be helping farmers and workers in the developing world to improve the quality of their lives and their futures. Fairtrade connects disadvantaged producers and consumers, promotes fairer trading conditions and empowers producers to combat poverty, strengthen their position in world markets and take more control over their lives.

Greener Gifts Instead of a gift item, give a special experience like theatre tickets. If you’re buying for the family activist think about giving a conservation gift like an acre of rainforest, adopt an endangered animal or make a donation to a chosen charity, as this is likely deliver the warm, fuzzy feeling, that gift giving is all about.

Choose Organic Organic shoppers have abundant choice of foods and non-foods gifts alike! There are some great reasons to choose an organic gift organic farms respect our water resources, build healthy soil, work in harmony with nature and help

to keep rural communities healthy. Organic producers are leaders in innovative research and strive to preserve diversity With all these benefits, it’s easy to see why buying an eco-friendly gift delivers such good value for money.

In addition to this small army of talented people, many new British producers bring innovative new products and ideas to the market every year. With Christmas just around the corner there is no better time to make the most of the selection of great British made gifts and décor available. By shopping for British made products for friends and loved ones this year, you will have access to some of the best gifts, decorations, tableware, food, and drink for Christmas 2014.

5 Great British Christmas Traditions The 25th of December is still very much about celebrating the birth of Christ, yet many aspects of a British Christmas have roots in pagan traditions. Here are 5 traditions that have shaped the way that we will celebrate the festive season in 2014 . . . Christmas cards – The shops will be bursting with Christmas cards from late autumn! They became popular in Victorian England when the first-ever Christmas card was created by Sir Henry Cole, a leading cultural figure in Victorian England who later became director of the Victoria and Albert Museum.

Christmas carol service – in the lead-up to, and on, Christmas Day churches and cathedrals hold special services, where you can sing traditional Christmas hymns, or carols. Caroling can be traced back to medieval England when minstrels of medieval England would travel from castle to castle, singing for their supper. Christmas crackers – Ever since 1847 Brits have been pulling Christmas crackers before their Christmas meal. Invented by confectioner Tom Smith as a way to enhance sales of his bonbons during the short, but lucrative, Christmas period, crackers once contained love messages, mottoes and trinkets; in today’s crackers you’ll find a novelty hat, gift and joke. Boxing Day – The 26th of December is a public holiday in Britain. Known as Boxing Day – it was traditionally the day to give tradesmen tips (or ‘boxes’) – many big stores now kick start their January sales on this day. Pantomime – Based (albeit loosely!) on traditional story-lines and fairy tales, children and adults alike enjoy the colourful spectacle of song, dance, slapstick and audience participation. Uniquely British, it’s fun, it’s frivolous and it’s definitely festive.

How to choose the right cot mattress Choosing a cot mattress for your newborn can be a difficult decision as there are so many factors you need to consider: safety, firmness, foam or springs and anti-allergy fillings as well as size, depth and hygiene. As your little one will spend most of its time asleep for the first two years of its life, it’s important to take time to research the various options available and choose a mattress that will help your baby sleep as soundly as possible. TOP TIPS: l Choose a mattress that feels firm rather than soft. Your baby needs support while he is sleeping. It should be no thinner than 10cm. l Check it conforms to safety standards mattresses should carry the BSI number BS 1877-10:1997 l Ensure the mattress doesn’t sag l Why springs? Springs provide an inner core in the mattress to support your baby. They tend to be longer lasting and spaces within

the mattress allow for increased airflow to help regulate baby’s body temperature. Safe Nights cot mattresses are designed to ensure your little one gets a safe and comfortable night's sleep while they grow. There are two options to choose from: a Foamfree cot mattress and a Mini Spring cot mattress, which both feature an innovative hitech 3D mesh structure, allowing a free flow of air so babies can breathe freely through the material for a safer night's sleep.

Both mattresses provide a naturally hypoallergenic environment that prevents dust mites, allergies and skin irritations, a breathable cover and fillings which prevent overheating as well as a removable, washable cover making each mattress easy to clean. AWAY WITH THE TOTS

Winter’s Too Good to Waste! The clocks may have gone back and the shortest day is fast approaching, but that doesn’t have to signal a time of hibernation for us humans! Winter can be one of the nicest times of the year to get out and about – less crowded and clear blue skies (sometimes!). Fewer tourists makes this a great time for families with small children to get out and about in the UK. Whether taking an invigorating walk along the coast, meandering through the countryside or visiting a Christmas Market, an ice rink or going to a Panto; we really are spoilt for choice. All we need is to work out is how to fit so much into the time we have available to make sure that we don’t waste what the winter has to offer. Simply going for a walk in your neighbourhood can be uplifting in winter and can brighten your mood. Even when the sun’s not shining it’s great to be outdoors, feeling the elements against your skin. Tourist information centres, libraries, notice boards and the internet can all offer suggestions for activities for you and the family - we’d also like to offer some inspiration . . .

bring encounters with unicorns, fairies, the Ice Queen, Merlin and the Knights of the Round Table – visit www.hydeparkwinterwonderland.com.

Fans of Winnie the Pooh can visit story locations, such as Poohsticks Bridge and The Heffalump Trap, in the gorgeous countryside of Hartfield, East Sussex. Start your visit at Pooh Corner, a shop that houses the world's largest selection of ‘Pooh-phernalia’ as well as paying a visit to ‘Piglit’s tearoom’. The website Pooh Country equips fans of the honey-loving bear with a map and all the necessary tips for winning at Poohsticks and following the train of your favourite stories. You can go to 100 Acre Wood – in reality called Five Hundred Acre Wood, Ashdown Forest and even to the place featured in Where the North Pole Was – visit www.pooh-country.co.uk

This ‘Old England’ themed event at Nottingham Winter Wonderland (19 November – 24 December) features a stunning ice rink, Christmas market trader cabins, two themed winter bars, a bandstand, rides, timber decked walkways, nativity scene, 100's of real xmas trees, snow dressing and much more. Penguin (not real ones, sadly) officials will be on hand at the rink in Old Market Square, to help anyone learning skating for the first time – visit www.nottinghamwinterwonderland.co.uk

As well as being home to the Duke and Duchess of Marlborough, the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill and a World Heritage Site – Blenheim Palace is also hugely fun at Christmas. Families are invited to take up the ‘Twelve days of Christmas' trail (8 November – 14 December), through the Pleasure Gardens to find clues and compete to win a Christmas hamper. – visit www.blenheimpalace.com/whatson/events Not only is Winter Wonderland, Hyde Park, London, (21 November – 4 January) home to the UK’s largest open-air ice rink, but there’s also the Magical Ice Kingdom, where ice walks

So, don’t stay indoors waiting for spring – wrap up warm, grab a brolly and venture outdoors to see all that this fabulous season has to offer – winter’s just too good to waste!

There is so much to see and do right on your door step in the unique little county of Rutland. If you enjoy sailing, windsurfing, fishing, walking and cycling Rutland Water is the place to be.

You are never far away from the water in South East Cornwall, there are boat trips to suit everybody, from a ferry ride cross the Looe River to cruises up the River Tamar and many of the coastal villages offer fishing trips. 20 minutes away, nearby Stamford is well worth a visit with a traditional of Friday Street market, a wealth of boutiques and cafes all surrounded by Georgian splendor. Cornwall’s Gardens are known around the world for the diverse collections of plants. The Eden Project may be the most well known, but places like Heligan, Trevarno, Trebah and Mt Edgcumbe should not be missed, especially in the spring when rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas burst into flower.

“Quirky, adorable, loved the design and style – simply gorgeous”

First Impressions

Was extremely excited to receive this product to test and it did not disappoint, it was so cute – it was love at first sight.

Smaller than expected which is a major plus as mums have enough to carry, nice design and colour.

Road Testing

First Impressions

Included changing bag, mat, dribble cloth and wipes pouch plus some bibs.

Absolutely fantastic product for when out and about. Really simple to use just fill your usual bottle with the required amount of water, add the powder formula (up to 9 scoops) to the container and screw to the top of the bottle put the teat and lid in the top part then once need push the activation button, shake well and place teat and lid – and you’re ready to feed.

Is it worth the price? At £19.99 I would definitely recommend this to parents as an on the go baby essential.

Recommended by My Baby? Absolutely!

At first this looks a lot to take in, however the benefits far out way that. Great for working together to develop key skill areas.

Road Testing

With 10 unique lesson plans which include a gorgeous little illustrated book, music CD, wooden maraca, sensory scarf, and Wilson the tree frog puppet it has plenty of variety to keep baby entertained.

What we most liked Road Testing Light, practical and really looks the part – which another mum commented whilst walking in the park. Main pocket, in which I stored spare nappies, cream etc, contains matching mat and wipes pouch. 2 Side Pockets are perfect for bottles, and a pocket on the back is ideal for mums’ bits and pieces.

What we most liked The custom design, the size and the lovely matching accessories. The bibs were fantastic as the fastenings were adjustable – so perfect for ensuring the clothes stayed clean when out and about. The bibs are a great size too.

Is it worth the price? Handmade and custom design completely unique – I’d say worth every penny. Would make a wonderful present for expectant parents and even one for the grandparents’ house – a steal at around £35 for the full set.

Recommended by My Baby? Most Definitely!

What we most liked The compact design allows you to carry both formula and hot water together but not to mix until needed. With a one push button activator you can make the bottle up with baby the other arm.

“Music Time . . . great for one on one time, just you two – Learn, laugh and play”

It does exactly what it says on the box and it is just lovely to have one on one quality time.

MY BABY ONLINE

Photo Sharing Across Generations In our digital world, we share more and more content online. However for many family members, online photo and video sharing can still feel like a relatively new and slightly daunting concept. So if you want to share your recent snaps, it’s all about knowing your audience. We’ve matched some imaginary family members with the online (or offline) method of sharing memories that can put a smile on the face of even your least-techy relatives.

Grandma Sue – Florida Self-taught computer junkie who helps other grandparents check their email. Sue’s the one teaching the other grannies where the ‘On’ button is. She’d love to see your photos on a dedicated photography service like Flickr. She can access the photo stream from her computer and the high quality, full screen images help her enjoy every moment. Flickr is also a great way to store your photos online, giving you tons of organisational tools. Grandma Sue might also like using Dropbox, where you can save and share your individual photo albums, which Grandma will be able to see on her desktop. Both services charge a small fee after you exceed the free data limit, but offer a great way to back up your photos, share content with family far away and acknowledge Gran as the IT guru she is.

Aunt Clare – Glasgow Absolute technophobe, runs screaming from the room at the slightest hint of technology and never wants to see or touch an iPhone … ever.

If all you want is to share photos, then there’s no need to force a technophobe to get online. There are numerous services that allow you to order prints of your digital photos that can be posted to your Aunt simply, easily, and for a great price. It’s lovely to have a tangible copy of the photos you love so while you’re ordering copies to be sent to family members, you might order a few for yourself! Check out services like Postagram, 23snaps, Shutterfly and Snapfish all of which allow you to order prints for yourself or your family.

Cousin Tim – Sussex Has an account on just about every social media site there is. He’s so connected he knows what’s going on with you before you do. When a family member is this connected, you can pretty much share your photos anywhere and they will find them. While you can always use Facebook or Instagram to share your photos, you may want to explore some of the other networks Tim is using for his photos to see if you like them better – like Pinterest, Tumblr, or even MyHeritage, that genealogy site he tried to get everyone to sign up for a few years ago.

Sister Sarah – Thailand While she’s backpacking around on her gap year she’s at the mercy of free wifi availability. When you post photos to Google+, they are automatically curated to pull the best quality photos and put them front and centre. You then have the option of sharing these photos with individuals, a “circle” of friends and/or family, or with the public. This would be a fantastic way to share photos with your sister, who may have limited time to check your updates but still doesn’t want to miss out. When she does have the opportunity to log in, your best photos will be highlighted.

Dad Bill – London Self-taught tech user, fairly confident but still a bit uncomfortable thinking about all of the strangers on the internet. Dad loves seeing your photos, especially of the new baby. But he doesn’t love the idea that strangers on the internet can see the photos too. Get Dad, and the rest of the family on 23snaps. This private social network for families makes it easy to privately save and share photos, videos and updates of your little ones and is designed to connect with every person in the family. Dad can view the updates from the free 23snaps app, Grandma sees them online, Sarah gets the photos via email and Clare of course waits for the photo prints to show up in her mailbox. Whether you’re glued to your iPhone or computer, or you’re happier leafing through a photo album, there are numerous ways to share photos with every generation, it’s just a case of finding the right ones for everyone involved.
