Raider Soccer Fights to the Finish

A New Pope

By Xochith Jimenez The big game was here, the battle for the central championship. The Reagan Raiders boy’s soccer team had made history already by being the first Reagan soccer team to ever move on to the second district playoff game, and these guys were ready for more. Having played the Lehman Lobos in the pre-district tournament, the Raiders knew the game, even on their home turf at Nelson Field, would be a battle. The fan support had been building through the week and on the day, the stands were thick with excitement, ready and expecting the Raiders to deliver, and perhaps not realizing the strength of the Lobos. As the game began, the Raiders did not look as confident as the Lobos. Lehman dominated the first half, scoring two goals. Nevertheless, the Raiders’ fight never stopped. Reagan brought the ball over and over to the Lobos’ goal without success. The referee blew his whistle, ending the first half with Lehman up 2–0. Already firing on all cylinders, the Raiders would have to step it up if they were going to get a win. As the whistle blew to start the second half, a change was obvious in the attitudes of the Reagan players. They were playing with their

By Christopher Fresch On March 13, 2013 a new era of papacy began. As grey smoke turned to white, the people waiting in front of St. Peter’s in Rome crowded to get their first glimpse of their new pope, some waiting for days. Finally, Jorge Mario Bergoglio stepped out on the balcony to greet the crowds. Cardinal Bergoglio was born Jump to 2

Not only were they playing as a team, but they were playing as the team that deserved to be in this playoff game. Throughout the season, the Raiders had given outstanding performances, each game bringing them a step closer to the big goal, this moment. There was no way they were going to let the Lobos take an easy win. Reagan kept pushing and just before all hope was lost, Gonzolo Jaimes, starting forward, scored the

Raiders’ first goal. With only a few minutes left in the game, however, the Lobos snuck another goal through. In the end, the Lobos won the day, 3–1, denying the Raiders the ability to move on to the third round of playoffs. Even so, the Raider boy’s soccer achieved its goal of making the playoffs, going one step further than any other team in Reagan history and for that we are extremely proud of them. These boys had showed us that when there is a will there is a way and everything is possible when you commit to a goal and follow through as a team.

By Jennifer Ponce Classic rides and rockabilly-garbed patrons kept the ionic Fran’s Hamburgers on South Congress rockin‘ and rollin‘ the Saturday night of April 6. Little did the be-boppers know, however, that it would be the last time they would eat there. Fran’s on South Congress closed the following Sunday morning at 11:00 a.m. Fran’s Hamburgers opened in 1973 under the name of Dan’s. It was started by Dan and Frances Junk, but when the couple divorced in 1990, the couple split the restaurants too. There are now four Dan’s Hamburgers restaurants (three in Austin and one in Buda) and one remaining Fran’s Hamburgers near Reagan High School at 6214 Cameron Road. Manager and son of Fran, Ed Terrazas, says,

“The restaurant’s lease was up, and the family chose not to renew it after 40 years of business.” Fran is deeply disappointed, “It’s a little sad, but I can’t afford it. The real reason Fran’s is closing is because of the taxes.” Manager and son of Fran and Dan, Tony Junk, adds, “We are a little bit tired of all the big corporations getting all the tax breaks, getting all the incentives. Then there are people like us that haven’t got any of that in 40 years.” The iconic Fran statue that was located on the South Congress location was moved to the Fran’s on Cameron Road, which will remain in business… for now.

Oskar Schell is a nine-year-old boy that is going through a very difficult time dealing with his father, Thomas Schell’s, death on September 11 in the World Trade Center, a terrorist attack that killed nearly 3000 people. Oskar was very close to his father, who was his hero, and after his death Oskar doesn’t know how cope. The story covers the two years after 9/11 and portrays Oskar’s struggle between self-destruction and self-preservation. The trauma that he has had to deal with is complex, causing emotional problems at multiple times during the book. His mom is going through her own grief process and tries to care for Oskar, but with Oskar’s eratic behavior and clever mind it sometimes gets too hard. His grandmother is very protective of Oskar and is always worrying for his well being. She has problems of her own, keeping a big secret from the family about “the renter,” a

very secretive person, but is more connected to Oskar than he realizes. When Oskar finds a key in an envelope inside a blue vase with only the name “Black” written on it, he’s ecstatic. He feels and thinks that it’s the last thing his father left for him to find, like a game. His father was always giving him clues for games he had invented. Oskar begins his search for the “Black” that goes with the key immediately. He travels all over New York City in search of the person named “Black.” He finds many interesting people, but none that the key belongs to. He needs to find out who the key belongs to so that he can find closure with his father’s death. Finding the owner of the key becomes his obsession, symbolizing his last tie with his father’s memories. It is very difficult to let his father go. Oskar doesn’t know who Jump to 2

I’m sure most of us have heard that the Samsung Galaxy S4 came out in April. Some people are asking if the Galaxy S4 will beat its rival, the Apple iPhone5, and if it will be the next big thing. The specs are: the Galaxy S4 has a 13 megapixel (MP) rear camera and a 2MP frontfacing camera. By comparison, the iPhone5 has an 8MP rear camera and a 1.2MP front camera. The S4 also has 2GB of RAM which is double what the iPhone 5 has. The sad part of this new phone is that it will have the same look as its predecessor, the Galaxy S3. This new model will be made primarily of plastic, while the iPhone 5 still has its cool, anodized aluminum case. Other than its look, it seems like Galaxy S4 will come out on top in popularity and performance. Its many new features are riding on its predecessor’s popularity and there is one espe-

cially cool, new feature that allows you to send a picture with sound that makes the experience of sharing pictures even better.

Chris Fresch: “I believe that if everyone at this school would show respect, teacher and student alike, this would be a less hostile place.”

Jalen Reasonover: “Teachers show respect to students, even if they don’t have to, by trusting them to do things.”

“I knew I was going to win first. Not a doubt in my mind said I wouldn’t,” said Smith, who alone this season has taken home 12 medals. “I haven’t ever gone home from a track meet empty-handed.” Willie has run track for Reagan for the last two years and has a total of 50 medals from that time, he says. In the end, the whole track team performed well, taking home the third place trophy in the district.

Secret Key, Cont. he is inside anymore, but through his journey to the truth about the key he tries to get closer to his dad. Instead he gets closer to his mom. He finds the truth about the key and it might have been very disappointing because it isn’t actually a game left by his father. He learns how to let go of his dad, however. This book was an emotional roller coaster; the emotional depth of what Oscar has to deal with is magnificent and inspiring. I can truly say this book was one of the best I’ve read and I recommend it to everyone that loves these kinds of themes—trauma, self-preservation, and just an inspiring story that can truly bring you to tears. Oskar became my hero because I know that many children probably went through similar circumstances on that horrible day. Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close is fiction, but was based on a very recent historical

event that affected many people and families. I truly think this book honored the many people that this story could have happened to, and the ones that lost their lives on 9/11.

On Thursday, October 18, 2012, Mr. Hollub, the choir teacher at Reagan, hosted a choir concert in the cafeteria. The audience was given the choice of three desserts. All the money collected was to help the Reagan choir and maintenance of instruments. The concert began with the entire choir singing the Reagan “Fight Song,” followed by “The National Anthem,” and “The Pledge of Allegiance.” The choir sang very well, and right from the start it was obvious that it was going to be a great concert. Next were solos from Cierra Green and Breon-Tra Haynes. The girls seemed shy at first, but once they got into their song, they sang with such excitement that the crowd was excited too. Mr. Hollub really did save the best for last, however, with Chris Mewborn. The audience was blown away

Today’s hairstyles are brightly colored with a lot of tone and body. Many celebrity women are wearing bolder hairstyles and African American women especially. Let’s take a look at what some celebrity women who are well known for taking risks with their hairstyle. Rihanna takes the most risks when it comes to hairstyles. She’ll try anything. Like, for example, cutting her hair into a red mohawk. She also rocks a hip-hop alternative look and is known for being a red-head because she sometimes passes with a front lace wig. Aaliyah was well known for a unique style of hair when she was alive. She passed away a few years ago. She made her “swoop” bangs hairstyle famous, and it still is. She normally kept her bangs over her left eye—that’s the “swoop.” She also kept her hair moisturized, clean, and straightened two times a month. She had short hair at one

point, but grew it out and she also wore hairpieces sometimes. Nicki Minaj’s hairstyles are unique. She’s also know as “Barbie’’ because she often wears pink or blonde hair pieces, and sometimes even half-pink, half-blonde. She has a million other hairstyles. Like, for example, a blonde afro with leopard prints on the hair, blue and green bob cuts, and a blonde, dreaded wig with light pink tips. Beyonce, the triple-threat dancer/ actress/model’s, hairstyles are the most vibrant of the mixed-hair textures. She’s mainly seen with full front lace wigs that actually look like her real hair, but are not. Her style is long like Aaliyah, but Aaliyah’s hairstyle was natural. She didn’t wear full front lace wigs like Beyoncé. It’s interesting to note that, although they are wigs, Beyoncé has to take care of them as if they are her real hair.

December 17, 1936 and is from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Bergoglio took the name Francis after St. Francis of Assisi who, despite being well known, has never lent his name to a pope before. In fact, there are many other firsts about Bergoglio: he is also the first Jesuit pope, the first pope from the southern hemisphere, and the first non-European pope in more than 1,200 years. He also speaks Spanish. “I would like to thank you for your embrace,” said Francis from the balcony. “My brother cardinals have chosen one who is from far away, but here I am.” Pope Francis then spoke in Italian as he blessed the crowd, asking them to “pray for me, and we’ll see each other soon.” Pope Francis is new in other, more subtle, ways too. He is a very casual person. He choose to live in a small apartment rather than the cardinal’s residence in Buenos Aires. He also took the bus instead

of a limousine so that the people of Argentina knew that they could talk to him at any time. “Good night and have a good rest,” he concluded in his surprisingly laid back speech. The crowd then cheered, “Habemus papam!” (We have a pope!) some waving their flags, while others cheered, “Viva il Papa!” (Long live the pope!)

Pope, cont.

Rosabelia Martinez: “Some teachers are disrespectful to students because they answer questions in a rude way and they act like they don’t care what is going on in the classroom.”

Katrina Barton-DeJean: “The golden rule is: treat others as you would like to be treated; yet some of us treat people as if we were better or greater than them.”

By Angelic Casarez The Raiders track team competed in the track meet on Thursday, April 11, 2013. Every single one of the members of the team did an outstanding job. The long hours put into practicing after school and running on their own paid off. Jonfray Harris took first place in the triple jump, Deondre Lott took second place in the 300-meter hurdles, and Willie Smith raced to first place in the 400-meter race.

and had to pick their jaws off the ground. There was so much passion in his voice, adding a little something unique to the song he sang. I would not be surprised at all if I were to see Chris Newborn singing on America’s Got Talent in a few years. After Mewborn’s amazing solo, the men’s choir sang Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up,” which Mr. Hollub sweetly dedicated to his wife. The whole choir assembled again to sing the very catchy “Elijah Rock.” One of the highlights of the night was the whole choir singing “Man In The Mirror,” featuring Psalm Williams and Breon-Tra Haynes. Both their voices, accompanied by the choir, were perfect for this song. Unfortunately, the concert had to come to an end, and the choir finished with the Reagan “School Song.”
