Life After High School Graduation By Kayla Phillips

Many students going to universities after graduating high school are required to stay in an on-campus residence hall. For some reason, many students seem to feel that this rule is flawed. But, living in a college dorm can be very beneficial to enhancing your college experience and even your academics. Living on campus improves your college life because of the location, money savings, and improved social life. Living on campus makes quite a few things easier for a first-year college student. The student is only a short walk or drive away from classrooms, club meetings, libraries, and sports facilities. Not having to drive everywhere, like offcampus, or “commuter” students do, saves a considerable amount of money, too. Many of the school advisors and other helpful school faculty are readily available if you need help. Perhaps the most important reason to live on campus, however, are the hundreds of other college students around you, creating constant opportunities to make valuable connections and form new friendships. On-campus living can prove to be a lot cheaper than living off campus. Living in an apartment means average monthly costs of three hundred dollars or more, in addition to utilities like electricity, cable, and gas. You will also be responsible for getting your own food, adding hundreds more to the equation. Over a semester these costs will add up. The added time and effort to of managing monthly bills is also a factor. Such issues can cause unwanted stress at a time when students ought to be

focused on their first year of college-level work. If you have to take out loan or have side jobs to pay for these extras, that just adds to the stress. Fortunately, college residence halls average two thousand dol-

How to Move Away to College By Casandra Del Castillo

Getting ready to move away for college can be pretty exciting for most high school seniors. Some might feel it is a scary moment in their lives if they have never lived way from home or do not know how to prepare. Not only will new college freshman be packing their things, but moving out gives them the opportunity to store away or get rid of high school memorabilia. There’s a lot to do! Here are a few things entering freshman might want to bring to college: 1. Comfortable clothes, including pajamas they won’t mind wearing around the dorm. 2. Toiletries (shampoo, soap, toothbrushes,

perfume, make-up, lotion, and so on.) 3. School supplies like notebooks, paper, pens, and pencils, and don’t forget a backpack! 4. Electronics such as a phone, iPad, computer, television, microwave, or mini-fridge. Check first with your school’s regulations to see what is allowed in your dorm. 5. Sheets, blankets, pillows, posters, and anything else that will personalize your dorm room and make it feel like home. 6. Comfortable shoes for walking. On your first day in the dorm, start unpacking and ask your new roommate to go hang out. It’s time to settle in and make new friends!

lars per semester including all costs and a meal plan. There will be a lifetime to stress about rent and bills after you graduate, anyway, so why rush?

Seniors’ Plans After Graduation By Angelic Casarez

Reagan’s Class of 2013 is getting ready to graduate, which means heading off in different directions. I got the chance, along with a colleague, to sit down, one-on-one with most of the class of 2013 to find out a little about each senior and where each is headed for his or her next step in life. To our suprise we found that while the seniors shared much in common, they also are each planning to pursue very different paths in life. Some are going straight off to college and, as a group, the upcoming college freshmen are planning to study a wide variety of subjects; others plan to take a year off from academics;

and many are sparing no time in looking for ways to make that money. Wherever life takes you, seniors, we want to wish y’all the best and only want y’all to soar like eagles, become anything you want to be, and achomplish all your dreams. I hope you will find this guide to our graduating seniors as useful and informative as I have found it moving and memorable to put together. Thank you to all the seniors that gave us a few minutes of their time. Be sure to say congrats and good luck in life to the Class of 2013!

Bittersweet Memories as Raiders Walk the Stage

A whole school year has passed already, and it’s soon going to come to an end. Well, at least for the graduating class of 2013 it is. It’s a very exciting event that graduating seniors are waiting for. It’s time for new beginnings, time to turn to the next chapter in life, and time to follow through with your plans for what’s next. It is sad to leave old friends that, most likely, you won’t see for a while or even ever again. Graduation is a very special day that will be filled with a variety of complex emotions for, probably, every senior, not to mention their families and friends. Unless they’re so relieved to finally be getting done with school that they feel nothing but pure joy, graduation is likely to be bittersweet for most seniors. Of course, they’ll be

excited, even nervous, too. Seniors are getting ready for the big day by buying new outfits to wear under their gowns. Invitations have to be sent out to relatives and close friend so that they can have time to plan to be there. Finally, parties are being planned with families first and friends later. Teachers, counselors, and school staff are very proud of the class of 2013 and sad to finally see them walk across the stage to accept their diplomas. Don’t forget: the ceremony takes place at the Erwin Center at 4:00 pm., June 5! Most seniors were fortunate enough to attend Reagan all four years and they have made lifelong friendships that will be tested as high school comes to a close. Memories have been created all over Reagan’s open campus--in breezeways, and atriums, classrooms and ball fields. The class of 2013 leaves behind their first best friends, first crushes, first As, and first championships as well as their favorite teach-

ers, best teams, and favorite activities. They leave behind so many mistakes and so many successes created through all four years. They’ve grown, learned, tried and sometimes even loved. Graduation is going to be a memorable day and an accomplishment for everyone who wears the cap and gown. They’ll cry, laugh, and finally remember fondly everything that happened in the last four years. The seniors leave Reagan High School behind, but they will never forget it. There are so many unknowns ahead: college, work, starting businesses, and even families. Reagan Raiders Class of 2013 will define success on their own terms. Congratulations, Class of 2013! Don’t forget to join your class and walk the stage on June 5 at 4pm at the Frank Erwin Center. The experience of graduating is not to be missed and can never be repeated, or forgotten.
