How to Avoid Teeth Stain A bright smile makes a terrific first impression. For some, though, pearly white teeth have alluded them and they are not sure why. We have some simple tips that can help. While reading through the list you may think, “Well, of course, that would work.” And that's the point. You don't have to disrupt your entire life. You just need to do some things that you would tell someone else if they asked you for advice. Basic Daily Maintenance The first thing you should do when you get up, and the last thing before going to bed, is brush your teeth. Waiting to brush after breakfast is also an option. But there are germs that have ruminated over the course of the night and a simple rinse before eating may help. Along with gently brushing your teeth, gums, tongue and the roof of your mouth, remember to floss. Even if you only floss once a day you will do yourself a great favor. Beyond daily tasks there are the 6-month visits to your dentist. Biannual Dental Checkups An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure…so they say. And at our office we find that the patients who come every 6 months are the ones who need to see us less often. Why? Because, along with their biannual cleaning, they also take good care of their oral health daily. Additionally, they are less likely to eat and drink things that will leave unattractive stains. Cut Out Soda, Coffee, Wine, etc. Soda has tons of sugar, and even those that don't are loaded with coloring agents and other substances. If you drink coffee without sugar, good for you. But the stains are going to stick if you're not diligent about brushing within a relatively short time after drinking. Red wine also can wreak havoc on a gorgeous smile. At the end of a romantic evening you want your “good night” smile to be as pearly white as when you said “hello.” These beverages, when taken in moderation, are not going to destroy your oral health so long as you are brushing and flossing consistently. But they will promote stains that any health conscientious person reading this is serious about preventing.
