Female Dogs Spayed

On Monday, November 25, 2019 (the same day the newly fortified PACT Act went into effect), a Cooper Township woman identified as Sarah Beth Stafford, 33, was caught on surveillance camera kicking a small dog that she let out of it's home in the 400 block of Keyes Drive in Kalamazoo Township. The video then shows her repeatedly kicking the puppy, who remained unaggressive during the entire attack.

The video, which was posted to Facebook by the owner of the dog that was kicked, sparked outrage and a lot of questions about what charges she'll be facing, and if this crime is a violation of the PACT Act. Let's talk about the PACT Act, what it is, and when it comes into play.

The Preventing Animal Cruelty and Torture Act or PACT Act, makes it illegal to make ·crush"/cruelty videos. As defined in the PACT Act, the term 'animal crushing' means actual conduct in which one or more living non-human mammals, birds, reptiles, or amphibians is purposely crushed, burned, drowned, suffocated, impaled, or otherwise subjected to serious bodily injury. The previous PACT Act made it a federal offense to create and distribute crush videos but failed to address the acts of cruelty used to create the video. This oversight was rectified when the President signed the amended law, making the act of crushing a federal offense as well. For an act of crushing or animal cruelty to become a federal offense, the crime must be committed on federal lands/property, or involve interstate or international commerce. Some examples of federal animal cruelty can include: 9

abuse of an animal at a national park

9

video of the abuse of an animal that is distributed across a state or international border.

Most animal abuse cases will be handled locally, where the abuse took place. In the case of Sarah Stafford, the entire incident occurred in one jurisdiction and did not involve federal property. The criteria to make this a federal offense is not met in this case.

Happy Thanksliving! Yes, you read that right! Vegans love to celebrate the holidays, too - only we like to see our turkeys not on the table, but outside having fun, like Jobe, pictured below eating his dinner at Chubby Goat Acres sanctuary in Schoolcraft, Ml. As an animal lover - not to mention, a lover of the planet and your own health veganism is a natural path for you. Vegans don't eat meat, eggs, dairy, "seafood," honey, and other animal-derived foods; and many also avoid using other animal-derived products like leather and wool. Vegan Kalamazoo recommends you become vegan by swapping one meal or ingredient at a time: when you get used to one swap, do another. Also, you should have lots of support. T hat's what we're here for!

Thanksliving and other holidays can pose a special challenge, so here are some guidelines: Okay: let's start with the whole "Tofurky" question. Some vegans love having it or another "vegan roast" at the center of the holiday table, while others are "meh." Most local stores now stock one or more brands of vegan roasts in their freezer section. They typically come with stuffing and gravy included; and the trick to preparing them is to follow the instructions exactly so you don't overcook (roasts tend to be low fat-yeah!-and dry out quickly.) Tofurky is made by Turtle Island Foods; other good brands are Field Roast, Gardein, and Trader Joe's. Alternatives to vegan roasts include vegan lasagna and vegan "meat" loaf. ► ►

And for those who would like to make their own holiday roast from scratch, here is a great recipe: ►

kazoohumane.org/donate The loss of a pet can be as powerful as the loss of a friend or relative. The first days, holidays and seasons without your faithful companion can be overwhelming. One KHS supporter shared a poem she wrote about her beloved dog, Joey, after his passing in September 2019. If you are coping with grief after the loss of a pet. know that you are not alone, your feelings are normal. and everyone processes grief differently and in their own time. Sometimes the only comfort you may have is in knowing your pet is no longer sick or in pain. Thank you, Sheri Shon, for sharing your poem and your personal journey with us after the loss of your sweet dog Joey.

I had to let you go today not in a selfish way You were trying tell me you don't have long to stay You loved me unconditionally when you ran away You found your way back home again because God showed you the way God knew that I still needed you that's why you had to stay I needed you to love and hold Joey, you comforted me everyday You got me through many surgeries knowing li'll pay you back someday You've locked your eyes with mine many times to tell me you had only days I wanted to hold you and love you forever but I knew you could not stay I had to let you go today... Love you forever, Joey!
