• Beckley Farm Lodge A vibrant 65-bed residential care facility for seniors, with Outreach and Adult Day Programs for adults living in their own home.

We have begun creating environments that support our purpose to build communities where people can experience wellbeing and happiness. Our aging care homes, including Veterans Memorial Lodge, are in need of modernization, and we want to bring areas to life – to transform living spaces into places that feel as much like home as possible, and that are warm and welcoming.

t Broadmead Care we believe that love, life and living matter. Our Purpose is to build communities where people can experience wellbeing and happiness, and to live life as fully as possible. We provide long-term care and Adult Day Programs for veterans, seniors, and adults with disabilities on the Southern Vancouver Island through these programs:

• Nigel Program An essential residential program for 40 adults with disabilities between the ages of 19 and 55 who reside in Nigel House and Harriet House. • Rest Haven Lodge A warm and welcoming residential care home with 73 private accommodations for seniors and veterans located in Sidney, with an Adult Day Program for adults living in their own home. • Veterans Health Centre The only adult day program for veterans who live in their own home in Victoria, providing health, social, and recreational services to veterans. • Veterans Memorial Lodge A cheerful and engaging 229-bed residential care home with 115 priority access beds for WWII, Korean War and modern day Canadian veterans, and an Adult Day Program for adults living in their own home.

icture this – a long term care complex that feels like home, with vibrant common areas, spaces where young and old connect and build friendships, and where people feel a sense of purpose.

This change means removing fabric wainscoting, patching gouges made by wheelchairs, upgrading handrails, refreshing paint on the walls, and replacing lighting, flooring, and window coverings. Diana, whose mother, Dottie, lives at Veterans Memorial Lodge, says it is critically important to feel like home. “This is now Mum’s home,” she says, “and the more things that feel familiar, the better. Beautiful spaces make this a wonderful place to come and visit, and enjoy each other’s company in the lovely gardens and comfortable common spaces.” Your participation is vital as projects like this are not covered by government funding. This is why your support means so much.

Residents and Clients of Broadmead Care Thank You!

R

etired Major Murray Edwards has been a long-time friend and donor to Broadmead Care. Following a stroke at the age of 95, Mr. Edwards moved to Veterans Memorial Lodge. Despite some mobility loss, at 99 years old (he will turn 100 in January 2020!) he is still very active and is an avid writer who spends many hours reading and writing in one of our libraries. Major Murray Edwards' military career began when he joined the Queen’s Own Rifles. In 1950, he became part of Canada’s Special Forces for service in Korea and was part of the Korean Battle of Kapyong in April of 1951. It is said that the Battle of Kapyong is one of Canada’s greatest, yet least-known military achievements. The Feels Like Home Campaign is a project supported by Mr. Edwards. Veterans Memorial Lodge is his home, and the staff and volunteers at Broadmead Care work hard every day to ensure residents like him receive the best in comfort and care.

B

orn in 1924 in Carrot River Saskatchewan, Art Johnson joined the Canadian Scottish Infantry, 3rd Division in 1944 at the age of 19 and served as a stretcher bearer. “After the first week of training, an officer came to me and said ‘Johnson, you’re off to the front line next week cause they shot the last one’." Art was shot and wounded in April of 1945 during a major battle in the Dutch village of Wagenborgen while dragging another wounded soldier along to safety. Despite his gunshot wound, Art continued to drag himself and the other soldier to safety. Art often forgets things now, but his daughter Nora tells him, “It’s ok, Dad, I’ll remember for both of us.” Art's story will live on for generations to come, making sure we never forget the sacrifice made by him or any of our Canadian Military.
