SITE/BUILDING SUSTAINABILITY

6

It starts with a walk outside. Sunlight is playfully dancing through the Cherry Blossom canopy overhead. Continuing along the path, this organic canopy morphs into a tessellated structure mimicking its natural counterpart. This structure facilitates a smooth transition into the buildings, where visitors are then enticed to break through the canopy and enjoy the views from the treetops. From the Research Branch, a panoramic view of the reservoir greets visitors at the top of the stairs. In the Education Branch, visitors find the conference room at the top, nestled between the trees and wooden truss system. In the evening, this frames a view of the setting sun over the Potomac River. Canopy provides a comfortable and intriguing promenade, highlights views of the surrounding manmade and natural sights, and creates enjoyable spaces that connect both researchers and visitors alike to the nature around them.
