FACADE DESIGN
I considered the facade of this project to be a very important and impactful piece. I worked through many iterations playing with proportions, openness, and materials. I used the rhythm of both neighboring buildings to influence the proportions. I was inspired by my other facade design to incorporate a green wall. Using the STRUCTURE Finnish Embassy as a precedent, and a system similar to the Portland Expo Center, I created a grided lattice for the vegetation to grow that would continue to be an attractive facade FIRE STAIRS year round. WRAPPING This was the final project for Studio II. The class started the project by going to the site and conducting site measurements to be used for analysis and documentation. ARCH 401 / PROF ABRAMS I started this design with a series of concept models. I settled on “wrapping.” I used this to create 3 distinct FIRE STAIRS BOOK RECEIVING/ STORAGE the spaces all wrapped by a datum. I developed this plan further and used the datum as circulation and to separate public and private spaces. To have interaction among the levels, I incorporated a courtyard towards theTRASH back. This MECH courtyard was inspired by courtyards such as the National Gallery of Art West Wing and the Organization of American States atrium. It provides greenery, light, and views into the surrounding spaces. NURSERY As a botanical library, my design serves a wide audience. I created spaces that serve the introvert and the COURTYARD extrovert, the casual reader, busy worker, and botanically intrigued. It hosts more generalSEED library elements such as CATALOG a cafe and reading rooms, but also more specific features such as a seed catalog and courtyard.

GREEN FACADE DESIGN
DUPONT CIRCLE, WASHINGTON D.C. ARCH 401 (2 WEEKS) SITE PLAN
SITE
1/64” = 1-0’
This facade is for a restaurant or multi-use building located near DuPont Circle. My two main intial focuses were to create a facade that could handle the westward sunlight, and would fit into the context around it, but have unique elements. Grid= lines to CONTEXT PLAN 1/64” 1-0’established from the neighboring buildings were used line up the elements of the facade. To incorporate sustainable approaches, I implemented a green wall for sun shading, insulation and run-off concerns from the roof. The green wall is woven among the levels of the facade, unifying the different floors and adding to the atmosphere of the outdoor spaces.

FLOATING GALLERY ARCH 401 (3.5 WEEKS)
My main concepts for this sculpture gallery are floating and open vs. closed. The circulation of the gallery goes through a series of airy and tight spaces: walking up to the gallery is open, but as visitors enter, the space is restricted. The large indoor gallery space has a skylight that creates a spotlight effect. The outdoor sculpture garden then opens up again and allows visitors to leisurely stroll. To play on the theme of floating, I lifted the gallery off the ground using columns, and emphasized the loftiness with a shallow pool beneath.

BALANCE IN THE GARDEN ARCH 400 (5.5 WEEKS)
For this project, I created a contemplative garden in an urban site. The garden utilized a “folly” created from a previous project. From the folly, I created a grid to align the elements of my garden. To create a sense of balance, a trellis complements the folly on the opposite side of the garden, and two pools counterbalance each other as well. I focused on creating a garden that had a controlled circulation but could also be experienced in multiple different ways. I played with varying heights and degrees of openness to create an interesting and relaxing place to visit. From shaded, grassy bosques to open fountains, this garden provides a space for contemplation no matter the visitor’s preference.

FLORENCE SITE ANALYSIS ARCH 400 (3 WEEKS)
This project consisted of comparing and diagramming two different spaces at a city scale. My two sites were the Piazza della Signoria and the Piazza della Repubblica. I utilized Kevin Lynch’s concepts of landmarks, districts, nodes, paths, and edges to study the sites. I created a collage that encompassed the atmosphere of both spaces.
