Wagner College has developed a curriculum that unites deep learning and practical application. The Wagner Plan incorporates our long-standing commitment to the liberal arts, experiential learning and interdisciplinary education with our geographical location and enduring bond with New York City. The College’s annual operating budget is $50 million.
LOCATION: Atop Grymes Hill in New York City’s Borough of Staten Island, a neighborhood of historic turn-of-the-century estates and mansions. Once the American home of the Cunard shipping lines dynasty, Wagner’s campus provides a setting that feels far away from the city. CAMPUS: 105 acres of park-like hilltop that overlook the Atlantic Ocean, New York Harbor and Manhattan. We have 23 buildings, including Horrmann Library with over 150,000 volumes. HOUSING: Three residence halls fully equipped with fiber optic phone system including Internet, voice mail and e-mail. 80 percent of our students live on campus.
As tenacious as any Seahawk, Wagner College enjoys a bucolic perch atop Grymes Hill overlooking Manhattan and the other boroughs of New York City. Founded in 1883 as a Lutheran proseminary, Wagner has evolved to become an independent residential liberal arts college enrolling a capacity of over 2,000 students. The location of the College above the gateway to one of the world’s greatest financial and cultural capitals was the work of alumnus Frank Sutter who convinced the College’s Board of Trustees to relocate Wagner here from Rochester in 1918. In this, the Rev. Sutter and the trustees were extraordinarily prescient. Their wisdom provided Wagner with a distinct geographical advantage over all other all liberal arts colleges in the country. Wagner is New York State’s southernmost college and its 105 park-like acres represent the highest elevation on the eastern seaboard from Maine to Key West Florida. The College’s signature curriculum – the Wagner Plan for the Practical Liberal Arts – capitalizes on the best of a traditional, suburban, liberal arts college campus and the infinite array of educational opportunities afforded by New York City. Students intern in the world’s leading financial institutions. They observe and experience diversity from the sophisticated workings of the United Nations to melting pots of multicultural neighborhoods. They circulate in the city’s unparalleled creative environment of museums, media, and performing arts. This is their laboratory. They immerse themselves and are inspired by the city’s sheer energy. The contrast between the frenetic life of the city and the almost pastoral setting of the campus is the perfect metaphor for the melding of experiential and theoretical education that is the hallmark of The Wagner Plan. In small learning communities, students and faculty explore the conceptual foundations of the arts, humanities, and sciences. The faculty challenges students to consider new ideas, to master new skills and technologies, and to reflect and draw meaning from what they have experienced in and out of the classroom. A lush canopy of mature maples and oaks shades Wagner’s 105-acre campus of manicured lawns and gardens; historic and modern buildings; and sweeping views of Manhattan, Brooklyn, and New York Harbor. In early 2009, former U.S. President Bill Clinton recognized Wagner College and President Richard Guarasci, at the second annual Clinton Global Initiative University. Wagner was cited for the Port Richmond Partnership, an innovative program that will focus the school’s community resources in an effort to improve quality of life in a specific Staten Island neighborhood. Movie companies have frequently used the campus as a classic college setting, most recently for a movie titled “School of Rock” starring Jack Black (Shallow Hal). The picturesque campus was also used in a fall 2001 television series, The Education of Max Bixford, starring Richard Dreyfus and as the site of a prospective private military school in the HBO series, The Sopranos.

Since the adoption of the Wagner Plan in 1997, enrollment has increased by nearly 40 percent and student quality as measured by high school average and SAT scores have improved as well. Once largely a commuter campus, now 82 percent of all undergraduates live on campus in residence halls that offer “million dollar” views. Though continuing to serve students from metropolitan New York, the college draws most of its enrollment from beyond the immediate region. By every measure – enrollment, endowment, and national reputation – Wagner is ascending the ranks of America’s strongest small colleges that blend the liberal arts with a commitment to service and preparation for the professions. Campus life includes the array of sports provided by an NCAA Division I program which is housed in a 93,000-square-foot sports center featuring an extensive fitness center, an indoor NCAA swimming pool and a basketball arena. A football and track & field stadium showcases a variety of playing fields throughout the campus including baseball, softball, lacrosse and soccer venues. Wagner’s alumni include Broadway Tony award winners, movie stars, film producers, playwrights, and Fortune 500 CEO’s including the chairman of GE Investments, the chairman of Dupont Europe, the chairman Emeritus of The Oppenheimer Management Company and the chairman of the New York Power Authority. Visitors to and residents of New York City alike enjoy access to a rich and diverse array of museums, cultural organizations, arts performances, sports teams, societies and attractions. Some of the best and most famous attractions in the world call New York City home. We encourage you to find out more about them, so that you can plan a visit to what is one of the most vibrant and exciting cities in the world. To get to Manhattan from Staten Island, you can take a ride on the world-famous Staten Island Ferry, a well-recognized icon of New York City transportation, and incidentally, a free ride

Walter Hameline Director of Athletics / Head Football Coach
Now in his 32nd year on Grymes Hill as the Wagner Athletic Director and Head Football Coach, the relentlessly energetic and optimistic Walt Hameline continues to amass an astounding record of achievement and consistency in college athletics. Hameline most recently led the Seahawk football team to its first-ever Northeast Conference (NEC) Championship with a thrilling 23-17 come-from-behind victory over Duquesne on November 18, 2012, while clinching a berth in the 2012 Division I Football Championship. The win personified the Green & White’s exhilarating season. Wagner began the season with three-straight losses, before winning its final eight en route to becoming the first Seahawk team since the 2002-2003 season to win a NEC Title.
For his efforts, Hameline was named as one of the 20 nominees for the Eddie Robinson Award, which since 1987 has been awarded annually to college football’s top head coach in the Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Lost amid this year’s immense success is the fact that Hameline helped lead the school to a 30-0 victory at Nationally Ranked Albany in the week following Hurricane Sandy. After returning from the state capital, Hameline joined his team at New Dorp High School to help aid in the recovery efforts. In this season’s home opener against Monmouth, Hameline saw Wagner College Stadium renamed Hameline Field in his honor. Additionally, Hameline had his first former player crack the NFL ranks when Julian Stanford made the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 53-man roster to become the first Seahawk in the NFL since Wagner Hall of Famer Rich Kotite suited up for the New York Giants in 1972. Two years ago, on November 6, 2010, Hameline became just the eighth active FCS coach to win 200 games with a 31-20 victory over Monmouth and is tied for 54th on the all-time NCAA wins list (any level). He is one of just 36 coaches to win 200 games at one school and holds an overall record of 212-125-2 (.626) at the conclusion of the 2012 season (entering this year) over his 32 years on the sidelines on Grymes Hill. Off the court, Hameline has also had tremendous success. In April of 2012, Hameline, who has enjoyed a long and proud association with metropolitan area basketball and the National Invitation Tournament (NIT), was the recipient of the 2012 Distinguished Service Award from the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA). Distinguished Service Awards are presented by the MBWA to individuals that have made significant contributions to college basketball. For more than two decades, he was one of five metro area athletic directors, along with his peers at NYU, Fordham, Manhattan and St. John’s, who helped comprise the Metropolitan Intercollegiate Basketball Association (MIBA). Along with NIT Executive Director Jack Powers, Hameline helped select teams for both preseason and postseason NIT’s, while directing other functions such as the NIT All-Star Summer Tour. Under Hameline’s leadership, the Wagner Athletic Department has undergone an ambitious expansion in both sport offerings and facility improvements. Hameline was influential in establishing the Seahawk Golf Classic, and the Seahawk Club, a pair of initiatives aimed at increasing funds for the scholarship endowment and complete financial support for the athletic department. Most recently, under his tutelage and thanks to the generosity of one of his former offensive lineman, Marc Lebovitz, Hameline Field was the beneficiary of a striking state-of-the-art video scoreboard in 2010. Lebovitz, a member of the Seahawks’ 1987 Division III National Championship football team and a 1991 Wagner graduate, is now a highly-successful New Jersey businessman. The scoreboard represents a major facility upgrade for the Green & White football program, while also benefiting the women’s soccer, men’s lacrosse, women’s lacrosse and men’s & women’s track and field programs that also call Hameline Field home. Coming into this season, Hameline’s overall coaching ledger included five ECAC Titles and three NCAA Tournament Appearances, highlighted by 1987 NCAA Division III National Championship. In the magical Championship Season of 1987, Wagner posted a 19-3 win over heavily-favored Dayton in the Amos Alonzo Stagg Bowl to earn the NCAA Division III National Championship. Against one of the toughest schedules in the nation, Hameline’s Seahawks rolled to a 13-1 record, winning more games than any college football team in America. The team earned the school’s second Lambert Trophy, symbolic of football superiority in the East among Division III schools, and ECAC Team of the Year recognition. Following the season, in addition to Sports Illustrated writing a feature story, a host of national and regional organizations recognized Hameline, highlighted by his being named the Chevrolet National Coach of the Year. In 1990, just three years winning the school’s only National Championship, Hameline became the winningest coach in school history. The 61-year old administrator has been a key developer of the NEC, serving on numerous committees, and is a past president of the league. Nine years ago, Hameline was honored for his playing, coaching and administrative achievements when he was inducted into the Utica Sports Hall of Fame. In addition, Hameline was given the All-America Football Foundation Johnny Vaught Lifetime Achievement Award in 1998. An outstanding defensive back at Brockport State, Hameline received his Bachelor of Science degree in physical education in 1975, and went on to earn his Master’s Degree in education from the University of Albany in 1977. Hameline resides in Colts Neck, NJ, with his wife, Debi, and they are the proud parents of daughters Kristen and Kelly.

Jim Carone enters year two with post-season aspirations after falling painfully short a year ago. The Seahawks return 22 letterwinners from last year’s squad that won 22 games, including 15 during Northeast Conference (NEC) play.
PITCHERS
Carone will be faced with the unenviable task of replacing Second Team All-NEC stalwart Ryan Van Spronsen on the mound. The Canadian native was one of the best in the college game a year ago, finishing up 8-1 with seven complete games and 2.07 ERA over a school-record 100.0 innings of work. Looking to help lessen the loss of the Wagner ace will be junior RHP Ryan Casey, who like Van Spronsen, started every conference weekend and finished up the season at 4-4 with five complete games and a 5.81 ERA over 69.2 innings of work. Casey, who struck out 36 while walking just 10, was at his best during conference play, helping the Seahawks to wins in five of his eight conference starts. With his prowess for pitching deep into games and an uncanny ability to avoid issuing free passes, the Garden State native will again be a valuable member of the pitching corps. Senior RHP Dakota Dvorak and junior RHP Nick Pavia are the only other returnees that started multiple NEC games a year ago. Dvorak hurled 43.1 innings over 18 games, including making seven starts, while Pavia joined the starting rotation late in the year and won two games with 26 strikeouts over 36.1 innings of work. Leading the returners in the bullpen is sophomore RHP Anthony Battaglia, who went 3-3 with four saves and a 1.84 ERA over 29.1 innings while limiting hitters to a .248 average. Battaglia assumed the role of stopper early in the year and did not disappoint, holding teams scoreless in 17 of his 21 appearances while having a hand in five of the Green & White’s 15 conference victories, notching three wins and a pair of saves Rounding out the returning pitchers that saw action a year ago is the quintet of sophomore righties Steven Bloodworth, Ryan Carmon, Evon Previte, Max Schmardel and Connor Smith. Bloodworth pitched in 11 games, including making one start, with seven strikeouts over 18.0 innings, highlighted by five shutuout frames against defending Atlantic 10 Champion Charlotte. Carmon was solid out of the pen, striking out seven, against just three walks, while posting a 5.06 ERA in 21.1 innings. The Garden State native made 14 appearances and was a big part of Wagner’s early-season success, picking up his first collegiate win with 2.1 scoreless innings of relief at Jacksonville, before closing out the Seahawks’ win at Charlotte with a scoreless inning of work. Previte saw action in 11 games going 1-0 with with seven strikeouts over 15.1 innings of work. Schmardel saw action in 12 games, with four starts, and struck out 17 over 28.1 innings of work. A hard-thrower, he showed glimpses of his live arm with a career-high five strikeouts over four frames at Hawaii. Smith rounds out the returners after pitching in nine games a year ago. After missing the better part of the last two seasons, junior LHP Matt Morris will be looking to make his mark on the rotation. Joining the pitching staff this year from the returners is senior RHP Nick Alfano, who is expected to see action in the outfield and on the mound. Rounding out the staff are freshmen Mike Adams (RHP), Nathan Hunt (RHP), Paul Mammino (LHP) and Ryan Spahr (RHP).

THE INFIELD
At the catching position, Wagner boast four players that will see time behind the plate. Leading the returners is sophomore Jason Gordon, who hit .300 over 26 games. The Maryland native also made 20 starts and picked it up at the end of the year, batting .435 over his final eight games. Also returning behind the plate is classmate Zack Yesko, who saw action in three games while playing behind Gordon and departed senior Hayden Hunter. After starting all 55 games at second base a year ago, sophomore Nick Dini will enter the catching forray in 2013. The athletic Dini caught in high school and is expected to see time behind the plate and in the infield. With a quick and powerful bat, he batted .293 with 14 extra-base hits and became one of the toughest outs on the team, hitting safely in 16-straight and 27-of-29 at one point. Rounding out the catchers on the roster is freshman John Lynn, who prepped at the Salesianum School (DE). Elsewhere in the infield, the Seahawks will have to replace a trio of departed starters in Eddie Brown, Tommy Higgins and Bill Murphy. Battling for time at first base are sophomores Mitchell Dressing and Tommy Mazurkiewicz. Dressing played in 20 games a year ago, making 17 starts, while Mazurkiewicz saw action in seven games. At second base, Seton Hall graduate Chase Gray arrives on Grymes Hill for his final year of eligibility. Gray hit .279 a year ago after helping the Pirates to the Big East Championship as a junior in 2011. Expected to replace Brown, who is now the team’s director of operations, at shortstop is junior college transfer Shaun Flynn, who led all NJCAA Division II hitters with a blistering .504 batting average for Burlington County College a year ago. At the hot corner, Dini is expected to fill the void left by Higgins when not catching. Rounding out the returners in the infield is sophomore Dan Wasilick, who played in seven games last year, with three starts. Wasilick will be vying for time at both of the middle infield positions. Also looking to crack the line-up are Adams and fellow freshmen infielders Vaughn Champion and Ben Ruta.
THE OUTFIELD
The Seahawks bring back their entire outfield as Alfano, senior Jayson Keel, junior Cliff Brantley, junior Ian Miller and junior Chris Smith all drew starts a year ago. Alfano played in 54 games, making 51 starts, as the Green & White’s primary right fielder. The Sunshine state native batted .276, including .317 during league play, with 12 extra base hits and 19 RBI. Alfano, who owns one of the strongest outfield arms in the league, picked it up at the end of the season, hitting .378 over the final 23 games of the year. In his first year on Grymes Hill, Keel garnered the bulk of the starting assignments in left field, seeing action in 52 games, with 50 starts. The Mississippi native hit .273, including .320 during league play, with a team-best 10 multi-RBI games while showing a propensity to come up clutch in big situations. Keel also scored 27 runs with eight stolen bases and ended the season on a tear, batting .390 over the final 13 games. Rounding out the primary outfield starters from a year ago is Miller, who garnered 2012 All-NEC Second Team accolades a year ago. The fleetfooted Miller played in all 55 games a year ago, with 54 starts in center field, and paced the circuit with a NEC-leading 34 stolen bases. Equally adept at the plate, the Keystone State native hit .312, including a team-best .336 during league play, while also pacing the team and ranking among the conference leaders with 64 hits, 39 runs, 27 walks and a .400 on-base percentage. Smith played in 44 games, making 36 starts, while garnering starting assignments in the outfield and at designated hitter. In his first year on Grymes Hill, Smith hit .262 while recording 19 runs, 11 RBI and four stolen bases. Smith, like the rest of the aforementioned players, finished up strong, batting a team-best .414 over the final 14 games, with five multi-hit games while reaching base at a .514 clip. Brantley saw action in the outfield and as a designated hitter, playing in 23 games, with 13 starts. The Staten Island native hit .170 (8-for-53) with eight RBI, four runs and two triples. Looking to crack the outfield unit are freshmen Trey Nicosia and Vito Gadaleta. Nicosia played in two games, before being sidelined due to injury and will have four years of eligibility remaining after earning a medical redshirt. Gadaleta joins the squad after prepping at Manalapan High School.

JIM CARONE Head Coach #14
Second Season / Monmouth, 2003 Jim Carone is in his second year as the head baseball coach at Wagner College in 2013. Carone oversees all aspects of the program, including but not limited to the pitchers and catchers. Carone previously served as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for three years at Villanova. No stranger to Seahawk nation, Carone was the pitching coach of the 2006 Wagner team that featured two-time American League (AL) All-Star and current Boston Red Sox relief pitcher Andrew Bailey as well as Washington Nationals farmhand Joe Testa and former Baltimore Orioles farmhand Andrew Huebner. Over the last three seasons with the Wildcats, Carone helped revitalize the pitching staff while spearheading Villanova’s nationwide recruiting efforts. During his time in Pennsylvania, three of his pitching pupils were selected by Major League teams, highlighted by right-handed pitcher Kyle McMyne, who was selected in the fourth round by the Cincinnati Reds in last summer’s annual Major League Baseball (MLB) First-Year Player Draft. In 2010, Carone’s pitching unit posted the school’s lowest earned run average (ERA) in over a decade while ranking 32nd nationally at 4.37, despite the fact that 10 of the squad’s 14 hurlers were either freshmen or sophomores. Additionally, two of the upperclassmen, Mike Francisco and Brian Streilein were each selected in the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft. Over his three years with the Wildcats, he also served as the school’s Baseball Camp Director while assisting with fundraising, academics and alumni relations Prior to working at Villanova, Carone had two successful seasons with Rider, capped by a storybook season that saw the Broncs win the 2008 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship after entering the four-team playoff field as the fourth seed. During their run to the MAAC Title, his pitching staff yielded an average of less than three runs per game over the three victories in helping the Broncs to the school’s first NCAA Regional berth in 14 years. Three of his pitchers were selected in the MLB Draft, including James Hayes, who Carone helped craft into arguably the school’s most successful relief pitcher as the league’s 2008 Relief Pitcher of the Year. Carone garnered his first Division I coaching job at Wagner, helping the Seahawks to a then school-record 15 Northeast Conference (NEC) victories and a spot in the conference tournament. All three members of the Seahawks weekend rotation (Bailey, Testa, Huebner) during his lone season on Grymes Hill would go to the professional ranks and were aided in their development by Carone, who helped the pitching unit record a school-record 342 strikeouts. However the top moment of the year came in the season’s final week as the Green & White won three-straight by a combined total of just four runs while holding Monmouth, the league’s top offensive team to a total of just seven runs, in earning an unlikely playoff berth. Wagner’s three-straight wins knocked the perennially successful Hawks out of the NEC Playoffs for the only time in the last 14 years. No stranger to NEC as a player, Carone prepped for Monmouth under legendary skipper Dean Ehehalt as a student-athlete, earning four letters from 2000-2003. On the mound, he collected 17 victories while posting a 3.67 ERA over 245 innings. The highlight of his career came as a junior in 2002, when the crafty righthander went 10-3 with seven complete games and a 2.21 ERA en route to garnering NEC Pitcher of the Year accolades. Carone also served as the pitching coach for the Concord Quary Dogs in the prestigious New England Collegiate Baseball League during the summer of 2006. While with the Quary Dogs, he mentored 2007 BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and 2008 St. Louis Cardinals draft pick Zack Pitts. After graduating from Monmouth, Carone began his coaching career at then Division II NJIT in 2004 before moving on to Stevens Institute of Technology in 2005. Carone and his fiance Stacy Coburn reside in Hightstown, NJ. What they are saying about Carone: Wagner College Athletic Director Walt Hameline “We are real excited to announce the hiring of Jim. He has outstanding credentials, having been a full-time assistant coach over the last six years, highlighted by a three years at Villanova.” Boston Red Sox Reliever, Two-Time AL All-Star and former Seahawk Andrew Bailey “He’s a baseball guy that knows the game very well and enjoys being on the field and around the guys. He already made a name for himself in his first stop at Wagner and will make a great college head coach. I’m excited that he landed back at the college. I can only see the program to continue to sail in the right direction with the addition of coach Carone.” Villanova Baseball Coach Joe Godri “Wagner is getting one of the top young coaches in college baseball. On behalf of the entire Villanova Baseball family and everyone that has worked with Jim here I can say that we are all ecstatic that Jim is being given the opportunity to begin his head coaching career. There is no question in my mind that Jim is the right person to move the program forward.” Rider Baseball Coach Barry Davis “Being named the head coach of a Division I program is the summit for most coaches when they begin their coaching careers. Jim put himself on this path immediately after his playing career, paying his dues at various levels. He is a lifelong learner and will continue to grow as the leader of the Wagner College baseball program and is a solid person who deserves this opportunity.” Rutgers Assistant Baseball Coach Joe Litterio “Jimmy has a lot of experience in the NEC Conference as a player and a coach. I wish him the best of luck and know he will do a great job.” Monnmouth Baseball Coach Dean Ehehalt “I am really happy for Jimmy. He has been successful at every stop as an assistant and now he gets an opportunity to lead his own program. I am certain he will do a great job. He is a quality person in addition to being a very good baseball person.”

CHRIS COLLAZO Assistant Coach #5
Second Season / Monmouth, 2009 Chris Collazo is in his second season as an assistant coach at Wagner in 2013 and will again be responsible for the Seahawk hitters and infielders while also serving as the program’s recruiting coordinator. Last year, he helped Ian Miller develop into a Second Team All-NEC performer whilehelping to bring in 11 new faces to the Green & White program. Collazo arrived on Grymes Hill from Seton Hall where he had served as an assistant since the fall of 2011 after previously working in the same capacity at Felician College. In the spring of 2011, Collazo helped the Golden Falcons to 24 wins while overseeing the development and maturation of two All-Conference performers in the infield. At the conclusion of last year, he was tabbed to coach in the New Jersey Division I/II/III Senior All-Star game at Kean University. While with Felician, Collazo was also responsible for coordinating all recruiting efforts, player training and the development and execution of practice plans while monitoring each player’s academic progress. Collazo also was in charge of creating scouting reports and spray charts for each opponent while constructing offensive and defensive strategic plans. In 2010, Collazo served as the assistant varsity baseball coach for Rumson Fair-Haven Regional High School, where he worked with the infield and outfield, coordinated team practice and also was the first base coach. Collazo was also the head coach of the New Jersey Niners Baseball Club in Farmingdale, NJ for several seasons, personally handling player recruitment and travel arrangements in addition to managing the team. A resident of Wall, NJ, Collazo is a 2010 graduate of Monmouth University where he helped the Hawks to a pair of NCAA Regional Berths, highlighted by earning NEC Tournament MVP honors in 2009 en route to a berth in the Mississippi Regional. A two-time All-NEC honoree at second base, Collazo left as the school’s all-time leader in hits while posting the school’s top fielding percentage mark at second base.

Mercurio comes to Grymes Hill after spending the 2011 campaign at Elon as the Phoenix’s volunteer assistant coach / director of operations. He worked primarily with the catchers, outfielders and hitters while also coaching first base for a Phoenix team that won 33 games. Additionally, Mercurio assisted with scouting reports and was in charge of the program’s summer camps. He began his collegiate coaching career as a volunteer assistant coach in 2010 at High Point University, assisting with the team’s catchers and outfielders. Mercurio also served as a first and third base coach and was in charge of the team’s travel and daily maintenance of the program.
