friday football fever Howdy Brazos Valley Football Fans, There are various sports seasons throughout the year, but football season really gets my blood pumping the most! From the conversations that I have had with folks over the last couple of months - most of you feel the same way! A big thanks to our 2017 FFF Cover Boys: A&M Consolidated safety Kolby Peel, Bryan safety Gus Hancock, College Station quarterback Marquez Perez and Franklin offensive lineman Casey Phillips. Peel is committed to Oklahoma State. Perez and Hancock have yet to decide, while Phillips is Baylor bound. Hopefully, plenty more senior players will field scholarship offers after the ‘17 season. Plenty of coaching changes have taken place since Bremond won its third straight Class 2A Division II State Championship in December. Lee Fedora is returning to A&M Consolidated, while Greg Morgan is taking over at Rudder. Anderson-Shiro will look to Brad Hodges. Somerville is replacing Jesse House with his son Darby. Hearne will be under the direction of Ricky Sargent, while Dwayne Ross is stepping up in Iola. St. Joseph will look to a former player to guide the Eagles. It makes me feel old to call Alex Castilleja ‘Head Coach.’ He was St. Joseph’s quarterback in 2010. BVCHEA is now being guided by Gerald Hancock. As for our fall football roster here at KBTX Media, John Wilson, Cody Coil, and Jake Kobersky will be back on the sidelines again with live reports during our 6 and 10 p.m. Friday evening newscasts. That’s 56 years of broadcasting experience, making KBTX one of the most established Sports Departments in the state! Our coverage will kick off Friday evenings at 6pm with live reports from Cody, John, and Jake from time to time, and then at 10:15 p.m. we’ll check back in with our sideline trio for highlights and let you know how other area teams are doing during Big Game Friday Night. As your Official Aggie Sports Station, we’ll also talk Texas A&M football along with Sam Houston State, Prairie View A&M and Blinn previewing their upcoming Saturday contest. While you’re supporting your team, follow the progress of other games in the area through @KBTXSports on Twitter, using #KBTXFFF. Throughout the evening, KBTX will keep you updated on the air during the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and online at KBTX.com. Then at 11:35, Subway’s Friday Football Fever kicks off with nothing but high school football! We’ll continue to feature our “Hit of the Night!”, Band, Cheerleaders, and Drill Teams of the Week, all in an effort to make Subway’s Friday Football Fever a show that goes beyond the sidelines. As always, thanks for making KBTX-TV’s Friday Football Fever, sponsored by Subway a part of your football season. We look forward to covering your team this fall!
See ya at the game,
Darryl Bruffett Sports Director KBTX Media

Iola continued its recent run of success with eight wins and a fifth straight trip to the playoffs. The Bulldogs battled through a tough non-district schedule then finished as District 12-2A Division II tri-champions with Evadale and Hull Daisetta. After a pair of playoff wins, Iola ran into Tenaha in the regional round. The Tigers ended the Bulldogs season 44-0.

The Bulldogs will turn to a new head coach in 2017 as Dwayne Ross takes over for Pete Martinez, who stepped down after going 33-14 in four seasons. Ross served as defensive coordinator under Martinez and has previous head coaching experience, including at Anderson-Shiro. He will have a very talented team to work with, led by receiver Tyler Dykes on offense and linebacker Colton Renick on defense. Ross said, WR/CB Tyler dykes “Dykes is very explosive with the ball in his hands, has good speed, and great leadership qualities. Renick tackles everything that moves on defense.” Dykes is one of six starters back on an offense that will need to find a quarterback. “Kaiden Halley and Blake Driver will have to step into the role,” said Ross. Nine starters are back on a defense Ross says should be the strength of the team. The Bulldogs will get to play four of their five non-district games at home. “Three-time defending state champion Bremond, state semifinalist Burton, and Milano will all be tough games.” Iola should be in the running once again for a district title. Ross said, “We expect to play for a district championship and have a good run in the playoffs.” Photo: Artie Guerrero

2016 REVIEW Snook enjoyed the best season in its short football history in 2016, winning six games and reaching the playoffs for the first time. After going 2-3 in non-district play, the Bluejays stepped up to win three of five district games to reach the playoffs. Once there, they decided to stay, picking up the first playoff win by a point over Rocksprings before falling to Flatonia in the area round.

The Bluejays are primed to make a return trip to the postseason in their third year under Chad Lechler. Nine starters are coming back on offense, four who were first-team all-district selections a year ago. Lechler said, “Our experience will play a key role in our success as a team.” The offensive line could be a strong unit with four starters back, led by big Devonze Franklin who Lechler says is, “a strong and physical player and the leader of the offensive line.” Michael Ramirez made the move from receiver to quarterback during the season a year ago and will be back under center in 2017. Eight starters return in the Snook 3-4 defense. Franklin and Charles Ramirez are two returnees on the line, all-district picks Damon Allen and Jeremy Davila, along with Ja’Quaveon Lovis are back at linebacker. Three starters come back in the secondary in Ramirez, Damonta Allen, and Kohl Junek. Lechler says, “Damon Allen is a player to watch on defense. He’s our best tackler and QB michael ramirez makes plays all over the field.” The defense will need to improve for the Bluejays to contend for a district title, as they gave up 48.5 points per game in their two 13-2A Division II losses. The two losses came to the two schools that will likely contend with Snook for the district crown this season as well in Burton and Granger. The Bluejays open district play at the Panthers, who will likely be a state ranked team after reaching the state semifinals a year ago. Snook, who will play their home games at Allen Academy once again, opens with two games on the road at Normangee and Brazos Christian before hosting Hearne in a big game on September 15. “We play a tough non-district schedule to get us ready for a tough district,” said Lechler. The Yeguas improved from one win to three, the most in a season for Somerville since picking up four victories in 2011. A week ten victory over Bartlett got the Yeguas to the brink of the playoffs, but a loss at Milano in the season finale kept them home for the tenth straight year.

Somerville will turn to their fourth head coach in four seasons as Darby House takes over for his father Jesse this season. The elder House took the head coaching job at Petrolia in June and Darby was promoted after serving on the Yegua staff in 2016. “I am extremely excited to get the chance to work with the same group of kids here again,” said House. He has a solid group of returning players suiting up for him, including seven starters on offense. Photo: Brenham Banner-Press House believes his team will hb/cb kevin miles be best in the running game, leaning on three returning starters on the line in Josh Gomez, Preston Sprouse, and Jeffery Warmkee and all-district running back Kevin Miles. The Yeguas will turn to a new quarterback this season, but Miles and receiver Willie Carroll, coming off a great freshman campaign, will be assets on offense. The Yegua 3-4 defense will lean on safety Jose Reyes and linebacker Daniel San Miguel, two of eight returning starters on that side of the ball. Also Gomez, Caleb Allison and Nick Vasquez will provide some beef up front, while Devin Sparks provides experience at linebacker. House hopes his defense improves upon getting off the field this season, citing third down efficiency as an area his squad needs to work on. “We need to improve in the passing game on offense,” House added. Somerville will be in the mix for one of the four playoff spots from District 13-2A Division II, and it all starts with the opener against Granger. “That is the game we are looking forward to most because it kicks off district play,” said House. “We have a competitive and tough schedule with our toughest game looking to be against Burton.” The Panthers are the district favorites, but expect the Yeguas to compete to the final week of the season to get into the playoffs once again.

2017 outlook
Texas A&M enters 2017 with a coach considered by many to be on the hot seat, a battle for starting quarterback, and a fan base looking for answers as to why the Aggies continue to falter down the stretch. The Aggies have gone just 3-9 in SEC games in November over the past four seasons, turning potentially fantastic years into mediocre ones. Kevin Sumlin added just one new coach this offseason, replacing secondary coach Terry Joseph, who left for North Carolina, with veteran coach Ron Cooper. He also replaced long-time strength and conditioning coach Larry Jackson with Mark Hocke, hoping a new voice and way of doing things may be able to help the Aggies keep from fading down the stretch.

Texas A&M has another quarterback battle that likely will not be decided until late in August camp, as senior Jake Hubenak looks to fend off talented redshirt freshman Nick Starkel and true freshman Kellen Mond. The eventual QB will have some great weapons to work with, led by wide receiver Christian Kirk and running backs Trayveon Williams and Keith Ford. The rest of the receivers group is unproven, but big things are expected from true freshman Jhamon Ausbon. The line returns a trio of starters in Keaton Sutherland, Colton Prater, and Koda Martin and should be improved in their second year under coach Jim Turner. Daniel LaCamera returns at kicker after an up and down sophomore campaign.

The Aggies aim for improvement in year three under John Chavis, but will have to do it with a handful of new starters. Gone are Myles Garrett and Daeshon Hall at end, replaced by seniors Qualen Cunningham and Jarrett Johnson who have played a lot but have not been starters. A&M has talent and depth at defensive tackle, led by Zaycoven Henderson, Daylon Mack, and Kingsley Keke. Otaro Alaka is back for his junior season at linebacker and will be the veteran of the group that includes talented freshman Anthony Hines and sophomore Tyrel Dodson. The secondary should be the most stable of the three defensive groups, led by seniors Armani Watts and Donovan Wilson. Shane Tripucka continues the legacy of great punters at Texas A&M, returning after averaging nearly 43 yards per punt in 2016.

The Bearkats will have to work hard to top the numbers they put on the board in 2016, but with the starters they have coming back the Kats could do it. Quarterback Jeremiah Briscoe returns to lead the offense after throwing an FCS record 57 touchdown passes a year ago. He has a very talented trio of receivers to throw to in Yedidiah Louis, Davion Davis, and Nathan Stewart and two very good backs in Corey Avery and Remus Bulmer. The line is the question mark, as three starters will need to be replaced. The Kats will have a new offensive coordinator in Tim Cramsey, who replaces Ole Miss bound Phil Longo.
defensive outlook
Sam Houston State will have a new defensive coordinator as well this season as Clayton Carlin was promoted to replace Brad Sherrod, who took a job at Wake Forest. Carlin will not need to change much about defensive end P.J. Hall. Hall returns for his senior season with 36 career sacks; just one sack shy of a new Sam Houston State record and three short of a new Southland record. Four other returning starters are back, including by Justin Johnson and A.J. Davis at linebacker and cornerback Carlos Teal and safety Alfonzo McMillian in the secondary.
