The KBTX Sports Department is excited that the 2019 season has arrived! Even though Cody Coil has left us for Abilene, he’s been working on the Dairy Queen Friday Football Fever Magazine while unpacking boxes and the ninth edition is top notch. Back in June, we were able to get A&M Consolidated’s Devin Price, Brian Darby and Nate Floyd and Navasota’s Jordan Jefferson, four of the hottest recruit prospects, together in the same weight room for our annual cover shoot. The foursome are expected to lead the way as Division I signees from the Brazos Valley in December and February. Several Brazos Valley teams changed coaches over the last nine months, and our football roster here on East 29th Street has changed too. Tyler Shaw joins us from the NBC affiliate in Casper, Wyoming, and the Dallas native is excited to cover some Texas high school football again. Also joining our team is Jessica Gruenling transitioning from our news department. She was the first female sports director in the state of Alaska in 2016 working at KTBY/KYUR in Anchorage, before joining our news staff here in Bryan in 2017. Our coverage will kick off Friday evenings at 6 p.m. with live reports from Tyler, John, and Jessica and then at 10:15 p.m. we’ll check back in with our sideline trio for highlights and let you know how other area teams are doing during Big Game Friday Night. As your Official Aggie Sports Station, we’ll also talk Texas A&M football, along with Sam Houston State, Prairie View A&M and Blinn, previewing their upcoming Saturday contest. While you’re supporting your team, follow the progress of other games in the area through @KBTXSports on Twitter, using #KBTXFFF. Throughout the evening, KBTX will keep you updated on the air during the Late Show with Stephen Colbert and online at KBTX.com. Then at 11:35 p.m. Dairy Queen’s Friday Football Fever kicks off with nothing but high school football! We’ll continue to feature our “Hit of the Night!”, Band, Cheerleaders, and Drill Teams of the Week, making Friday Football Fever a show that goes beyond the sidelines. As always, thanks for making KBTX-TV’s Friday Football Fever, sponsored by Dairy Queen, a part of your football season. We look forward to covering your team this fall! See ya at the game,
Darryl Bruffett Sports Director KBTX Media

Iola rallied from a 1-4 start to the season, winning their final three district games of the year in convincing fashion to reach the postseason for the seventh straight season. Flatonia ended their run with a twopoint victory in the bi-district round. Head coach Dwayne Ross said, “Our biggest challenge was dealing with injuries and new starters to begin the season. Getting healthy after the start of district to make a push to the playoffs was the best part of the year.”

2019 OUTLOOK
The Bulldogs bring back seven starters on offense and seven more on defense under new head coach Kerry Bamburg, who served as the head man at Aldine Eisenhower from 2013 to 2017. Dwayne Ross stepped down in July and told KBTX before he left, “We will have to replace a number of seniors that played a bunch of games the past few years. We have to mature in a hurry and have several players go both ways.” On offense Iola is stacked WR/DB Adam Crenshaw at wide receiver. “Adam Crenshaw is a big target with good hands that makes plays. Case Creamer has good speed and good hands and Zach Hollingsworth has good speed and makes plays. He missed half the season last year due to injury.” Sophomore Clayton Stafford looks to be the main candidate to take over at quarterback and throw to the Bulldogs trio of talented receivers. Three starters are also back on the offensive line. “Tyler Westbrook is a big lineman and a three-year starter,” Ross said. “Spencer Quinlan has good size and is a three-year starter and Kurtis Landy is athletic and very quick,” Ross added. The Bulldogs 3-4 defense has plenty of talent returning in the secondary, as all four starters come back. Ross said, “Crenshaw is a physical defensive back and a good coverage guy. Hollingsworth is super aggressive and makes plays. Colton Boullion has good speed and is physical, and Creamer is also a good cover guy.” Ross lists two players to watch at linebacker in Landry, “an aggressive linebacker who missed most of last year with an injury,” and Coy Elliott, “an aggressive linebacker that gained valuable experience as a freshman last year.” Clayton Costello is the lone returnee on the line. The Bulldogs face a tough schedule again this season, starting in non-district play. Ross said, “We face teams with lots of history that are traditional powers. We will have to mature in a hurry with so many new starters and players and stay healthy to get to district. It will be a grind to play eight straight games before the open week, but we did not want to have a nine-game schedule again this season and were able to pick up a game during our first bye week from a year ago in Tomball Rosehill.”
