Warrior Gloria By: Zabrina C. Mathews OUR M O T H E R The servant, warrior refused to believe and dancer She had this disease Had breast cancer And battled it on praying knees That metastasized It was 16 short months Some may say denial from diagnosis to demise Her daughters And almost 9 years since Say S U R V I V A L. she said “goodbye.” She is forever our muse WARRIOR GLORIA Who ignites our fuel Left her pain at the altar As she now has a bird’s eye view Where she unleashed her pleas Watching all the things she knew Her daughters were meant to do Whilst giving God all Glories All in her Glorious name Gaining peace Transforming loss and pain With His grace Into Beauty. With sincerity And strength in the face We care Of her daughters. About uplifting the community. Setting boundaries Gloria’s Gifted Gems RepreZent She fought in privacy Women Knowing the loving community cared EmPOWHERment. Humbled and grateful for their prayers As she was the epitome Still this plight Of sensitivity for humanity Her example we take heed She couldn’t share That is why it is important It was Hers alone to bare Our mothers story is shared She had the foresight This grim illness Is deadly and dangerous. To fight with all her might It can quickly claim She fought Loved ones you’re blessed with In the manner she thought This personal poem Is a whole-hearted message. Was right From Warrior Gloria’s daughters Choosing iron clad faith About Breast Cancer Awareness. And Hope to cope. OUR MOTHER

RESOURCES EARLY DETECTION OF BREAST CANCER SAVES LIVES! Mammograms have been proven to save lives. A mammogram is an X-ray that helps detect breast cancer. This procedure informs women with breast cancer up to three years in advanced before it is felt. Check out these statistics on women who were diagnosed early: In 2024, approximately 300,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in women in the U.S. On average, a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer in the United States every two minutes Approximately 66% of breast cancer cases are diagnosed at the beginning stage when it is easiest to treat Regular screenings for breast cancer have a 26% lower breast cancer death rate

Screenings

PREVENTION:

Self-Examination To perform a breast self-exam, follow these steps: IN THE SHOWER: Using the pads of your three middle fingers, examine the entire breast and armpit area with light, medium, and firm pressure. Be sure to check both breasts every month, looking for any new lumps, thickened areas, hardened knots, or other changes. IN FRONT OF A MIRROR: With your arms relaxed at your sides, examine your breasts visually for any changes in shape or contour, as well as any dimpling, swelling, or other skin irregularities on or around the breasts, and any alterations in the nipples. Then, place your palms on your hips and press down to engage your chest muscles. Observe for any dimpling, puckering, or other changes, especially on one side. Keep in mind that it’s normal for the left and right breasts to be slightly different—very few women have perfectly symmetrical breasts. LYING DOWN: While lying down, place a pillow under your right shoulder and rest your right arm behind your head. Using your left hand, apply the pads of your three middle fingers to check your right breast, ensuring you cover the entire area and the armpit. Use light, medium, and firm pressure to feel for any new lumps, thickened spots, hardened knots, or other changes. Also, gently squeeze the nipple to check for discharge. Then, repeat these steps for your left breast.

A ZINE FOR A CAUSE

Essentially, the message I give Whether passive or aggressive. Is that October is Breast Cancer Awareness. Please. Check. Dem. Breast’sssss! Zabrina a/k/a RoyalZee is a storyteller who poetize for those agonized and seeking the glory of healing. Yet, on the flip side she’s hellfire inspired for women to feel empowered aiming to ignite BIPOC lasses to boldly face and embrace their pizzazz. Sharing her poems of wellness awareness, healing, personal reflection and development through self-love at spoken word events throughout NYC and social media outlets. This Zine is a love letter to her dearly departed mother, “Warrior Gloria” and all fighters that their battle is not in vain.
