Citywide sale June 10, 11 It’s time to pull out, dust off and polish up all of that old stuff you have been meaning to get rid of.

Gladstone is hosting its annual Citywide Garage Sale on Friday and Saturday, June 10 and 11.

The purpose of the citywide sale is to encourage recycling and reusing of items, and discourage usable items from ending up in landfills.

“We host the citywide garage sale to bring awareness to the fact that there are many ways that people can repurpose and reuse things.

This creates the perfect opportunity for Gladstone citizens to get rid of those things they no longer want or need and lets them earn some extra cash while reducing waste that would go into a landfill,” said Mayor Barry McCullough.

The citywide garage sale is held in conjunction with the Gladstone Area Chamber of Commerce’s Summertime Bluesfest, which is being held at Oak Grove Park on June 10 and 11.

Residents are allowed to have two garage sales per year, but this citywide event does not count as one of those garage sales. So clean out your closets, garage, attic or backyard and earn a little extra cash while being environmentally friendly.

Residents are encouraged to complete their application for a garage sale online at the city website. Go to www.gladstone.mo.us and click on the garage sale icon at the bottom of the page.

Failure to register brings 5-year sentence Jerry Goodman Jr., 43, of Kansas City North was sentenced May 18 by U.S. District Judge Greg Kays to five years in federal prison without parole for failing to register as a sex offender, according to a press release from U.S. Attorney Beth Phillips.

On Oct. 13, 2010, Goodman pleaded guilty to failing to register as a sex offender.

Goodman was convicted in Oklahoma on June 6, 2002,

of indecent or lewd acts with a child under the age of 16.

According to police reports, Goodman attempted to touch the breast of a 15-yearold girl.

Goodman was sentenced to a 10-year suspended sentence (with five years served concurrent with parole revocations in other cases) and ordered to register as a sex offender. After his release from prison in Oklahoma, Goodman moved to Kansas, where he registered with Sedgwick County, Kan., authorities and continued to mail verification forms to the sheriff’s department through March 31, 2009.

However, Goodman failed to report in person as required under Kansas law.

On Sept. 5, 2008, Goodman was arrested in Kansas on outstanding warrants, including failure to register as a sex offender in connection with his failure to report in person to the sheriff’s department. Goodman was charged with nine counts of failure to register as a sex offender.

In November 2009, officers learned that Goodman had been living in Kansas City, Mo., since approximately May 2009. Goodman was arrested in Clay County on Nov. 2, 2009, for stealing. Records from both the Clay County and Platte County sheriffs’ departments confirm that Goodman has never registered in Missouri as a sex offender.

High school musical theater students nominated for Blue Star Awards Starlight Theatre employees once again traversed the metro area to deliver the good news of 2011 Blue Star Award nominations to local high school theater students and instructors.

The annual nominations in 20 Blue Star Award categories were delivered to high schools throughout Greater Kansas City, and on Thursday night, May 26, the Blue Star Award winners will be recognized from Starlight’s Cohen Community Stage Starlight’s Blue Star Awards, modeled after Broadway’s Tony Awards and sponsored by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Kansas City, are part of an educational program recognizes achievement and excellence in high school musical theatre.

The culmination of the program each year is the annual awards ceremony. This year’s crowning event will begin at 7:30 p.m. The ceremony is free and open to the public. Parking is $5 per vehicle.

Service Notes Army Pfc. Ryan K. Main graduated from the Field Artillery Automated Tactical Data Systems Specialist Advanced Individual Training course at Fort Sill, Lawton, Okla.

The course is designed to train soldiers who are members of the Army’s field artillery team as specialists to operate the advanced field artillery tactical data systems for both cannon and multiple launch rocket systems. The specialists play a critical role in the safe, accurate and lethal delivery of the field artillery’s

various fire support systems used to support infantry and tank units in combat. Skills training included methods of computing target locations using computers or manual calculations, ammunition handling techniques, and operating and performing maintenance on related equipment, vehicles, generators, and artillery tactical and data systems.

He is the son of Ronda K. Misenhelter of Kansas City. His wife is Rhiannon.

Students fight human slavery Area high school students have organized an event to help raise awareness and support for groups fighting human slavery.

The students, who are part of Northland Christian School’s ministry team, have planned their Break the Trade event for Friday, May 27, at Harmony Vineyard Church activities building.

Starting at 1 p.m., Break the Trade is a free event featuring area bands.

Concessions will be available on site, and anyone interested is invited to come and go at any time during the after-

noon or evening. Speakers will address the topic of human slavery both locally and at the international level.

The event is expected to conclude at about 8 p.m.

The address for the venue is 600 N.E. 46th St. in Kansas City.

With the Missouri General Assembly enacting new legislation recently, the topic of human slavery is timely. Local groups will share how predators are active here in the Kansas City area.

The musical electronic play system is part of a new playground dedicated by Mayor Barry McCullough and the City Council last Saturday, May 21, as part of National Kids to Parks Day. It is on the eastern portion of the park at 76th Street and Northeast Antioch Road.

The Neos 360 demands fullbody participation to reach the lighted pads that are the basis of the eight programmed game options. The egg-shaped control panel touts it as “part electronic game, part competitive spot and fun for all ages.”

To begin a round of play, the number of players — one or two — and which game should be loaded is entered into the control panel. And then the contest begins.

In Marathon, the player who presses 40 lights of the assigned color first is the winner. Players pair up for Double Dots, which requires the teams of two to press two lights of their color at the same time. Surround Sound is a music-making game.

The other choices are Light Grabber, Fire Fighter, Rodeo, Ninja and Zig Zag. “It combines the speed and reflex action of video games with the explosive movement of aerobic exercise to create a physically challenging and exciting activity,” Lillis wrote about the Neos 360.

Another component of the modernized playground targets problem-solving skills and social interaction as well as exercise. The Activo climbing structure looks like a spider web with pieces of green and navy blue tunnels trapped inside.

“Both of these play structures were chosen to attract children’s interest and engage them in exertive exercise,” Lillis wrote. “Statistics show us that fewer kids are playing in the parks than in years past, and we

are offering something new to bring them back.”

She said the activity at Happy Rock dictated the choice of the Neos 360.

The city’s Parks and Recreation Department aims to offer amenities that correspond with the needs of the neighborhood users of each local park. The department also tries to provide play structures that can be used by wide age groups. A sign at the new playground on the east side of the park indicates it is for school age children, while the playground on the west side of the park is meant for younger children.

So far, feedback about the new equipment has been good.

“We have received overwhelmingly positive feedback, and our observations of families playing the games together — moms and dads with their children — are very gratifying,” Lillis wrote.

Despite the space-age appearance of the playground, city officials don’t expect to need any outof-this-world resources to maintain it.

This colorful play structure is part of the new playground on the east side of Happy Rock Park. The new equipment is meant to challenge children physically and mentally. In addition to steps and a slide, the orange, purple and green equipment includes a drum in one of the walls as well as movable beads that can be lined up with the words that match the color of the spheres, at left. The words for red, purple, blue, green and yellow are written below the corresponding slot in English, Spanish and French.

By Nancy K. Lane The number of Missouri veterans recognized for their military service in World War II, Korea and the Vietnam-era is quickly approaching the milestone of 100,000.

Few states recognize their veterans in the way that Missouri does, with ceremonies held throughout the state, said James Ortmeyer, director of the Missouri Veterans Recognition Program.

“The veterans recognition program is Missouri’s way of saying ‘thank you’ to the thousands of brave men and women who answered their nation’s call,” Ortmeyer said.

The Missouri Veterans Recognition Program began in April 1919 with an act of the Missouri General Assembly. The act authorized the Missouri adjutant general to present medals of appreciation to Missouri National Guard veterans who served with the regular armed forces in the SpanishAmerican War, Mexican border service or World War I. In 2000, the World War II Awards Program was established. The program goal is to recognize all Missouri veterans, regardless of branch of the military, who honorably served between Dec. 7, 1941, and Dec. 31, 1946. The spouse or eldest living survivor of a deceased veteran is eligible to apply for the award. As of March, approximately 46,000 World War II awards had been presented.

In addition to World War II, Missouri veterans who participated in the D-Day invasion of Europe between the dates of June 6 and Aug. 31, 1944, are eligible to receive a replica of the 50th anniversary Jubilee of Liberty Medal.

The Jubilee of Liberty Medal was first awarded in June 1994 to American servicemen for their participation in the Battle of Normandy. More than 5,000 of these medals have been awarded to Missouri veterans.

The World War II Awards Program presents this medal to all Missouri veterans who honorably served between Dec. 7, 1941, and Dec. 31, 1946.

The program expanded in 2003 with the addition of the Korean War Veterans Award.

Missouri veterans who served on active duty either in the United States or overseas from June 27, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955, qualify for recognition. Approximately 17,250 Korean Awards have been presented.

In 2006, the Vietnam War Award was authorized by a House bill for Missouri veterans who served on active duty from Feb. 28, 1961, to May 7, 1975. Approximately 28,000 Vietnam awards have been presented.

Although the number of recipients approaches 100,000, it is estimated that this represents approximately a quarter of the eligible Missouri veterans, living and deceased.
