Church families help city gardener Despite cloudy skies and a brisk wind, about 50 members of the Shoal Creek unit of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints spent almost three hours working in areas around the Gladstone Community Center, Central Park and Gladstone City Hall. Under the direction of Beth Houlihan, city gardener, they pulled weeds and mulched trees in these areas, as well as along several side streets. Trees along the side streets were planted in the city easement areas under a Transportation Enhancement Grant. Houlihan said she is always glad to accept volunteer help with these tasks. City employees would have to take time from other concerns to accomplish these tasks without the volunteer help. Many church members came as families to help with the work. Teenagers helped fill wheel barrows with mulch, and younger children helped to pull

weeds and spread the mulch under the trees. “It makes me happy to help others,” said Seth Argyle, 14. “I think it is fun to work together.” The lay leader of the unit, Bishop Greg Piontek of Gladstone, said this project was chosen because they wanted to help the community where many church members live. “We also wanted a project where we could work as families,” Piontek said. After the piles of mulch were depleted, volunteers met at Happy Rock Park for a picnic of hot dogs and hamburgers. Community service activities have been planned by local units of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latterday Saints throughout the world in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the Church Welfare Plan. This plan was instituted in 1936 by church President Heber J. Grant, who said,
