Couple’s murder/suicide brings Gladstone homicide count to 4 this year City reports no overall rise in violet crime By Amy Neal Gladstone’s fourth homicide of the year occurred over the weekend in what authorities have deemed a murder/suicide involving a husband and wife with health issues. The Sunday, Aug. 12, discovery of the bodies of Christine and Anthony Niccoli in an apartment complex on North Park Avenue came less than a week after the body of a missing woman was found with multiple stab wounds. The Jackson County medical examiner ruled the deaths of the Niccolis, both 52, murder and suicide. Richard King, Gladstone’s public information coordinator, said evidence points to the couple having made a death pact because of

“mutual health concerns.” “They both agreed to do it, but one had to take the other one’s life in order to take their own,” he said. Four days earlier, the body of Nancy BowNancy Bowman J. man, 52, was discovered a day after Gladstone police received a report of a missing woman who lived at Mountainview Apartments. As part of the investigation, officers conducted a canvass of the area, including a wooded area behind the apartments where the body was located. The medical examiner ruled the death a homicide. The last time the city had multiple homicides in a year was 2009, when the

total was three. There were no homicides in 2010 and one in 2011, King said. “The majority of homicides that have occurred in Gladstone over the years have been related to domestic events leading up to the act,” King said. “Even so, there have been many years when the homicide rate was zero.” The Niccolis’ and Bowman’s deaths follow the murders of Juan M. Orozco-Vargas, 26, and Dr. Irina A. Puscariu, 46. Twent y-seven-year- old Luis Fernando Morales-Hernandez of Gladstone was charged with first-degree murder after admitting to fatally stabbing OrozcoVargas with a steak knife on June 25 in Gladstone.
