Personal fireworks not allowed in city Fireworks are prohibited in Gladstone by city ordinance. The ordinance makes it unlawful to sell, purchase, use, ignite, display, discharge or possess fireworks within the city. This rule includes all UN0336 1.4G fireworks, formerly referred to as class C fireworks. Fireworks, as defined by the ordinance, do not include toy pistols, toy canes, toy guns or other devices in which paper caps containing 25-hundredths grain of explosive compound are used, provided they are constructed so
that the hand cannot come into contact with the cap when in place for use. The city has established a zero-tolerance policy regarding fireworks, and Director of Public Safety Mike Hasty has said the ordinance will be enforced during the Independence Day holiday. Officers will take enforcement action including issuing court summonses to offenders and seizing any fireworks in violation of the ordinance. Additional FIREWORKS/Page A9

July 10 grandfamilies meeting to feature ‘Healthily Ever After’ puppet show The Northland Grandfamilies Program will host a special presentation for both grandparents and the grandchildren they are raising at its July meeting. “Healthily Ever After,” a puppet show that focuses on healthy eating habits and being physically active, will be presented at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 10, at North Cross United Methodist Church, 1321 NE Vivion Road in Kansas City.
Kraig Kensinger, a nutrition educator with the University of Missouri Extension, will present the puppet show, which is geared to preschoolers and elementary school-aged children. Kensinger uses puppetry and music to teach children about the importance of eating a variety of foods, growing their own food and staying fit. “The program engages the children in a lively experience that teaches
them about the importance of exercising, eating nutritious meals, getting enough sleep, and practicing good hygiene such as handwashing,” he said. To attend the July 10 show or to learn more about the Northland Grandfamilies Program, call 407-3490.
