Reminder to drivers: Watch for students

With the start of a new academic year, Gladstone police and the Missouri State Highway Patrol remind drivers that young people will be walking, biking and driving to school. The first day of classes for North Kansas City Schools was Wednesday, Aug. 14. “The Gladstone Police would like to remind everyone to be alert and practice safe driving skills for the safety of our children, whether they walk, ride the bus or are dropped off by their parents at school,” said a press release from the city. To help insure the safety of students returning to class, there will be a police presence at local schools during drop-off and pickup times. Crossing guards will be in place to help the walkers cross the street safely, and the Traffic Unit will monitor child restraint and seat belt use throughout the year, especially in school zones. “Child restraints and seat belts for children are primary laws and require no other violation for ticketing,” said

“Traffic patterns will change as school buses and parents taking their children to school join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute. Whatever route you drive, expect this additional traffic and prepare by allowing extra time to reach your destination.” Missouri State Highway Patrol Gladstone Police Sgt. Ken Buck. “Our primary goal is the safety of the children.” Public safety officials advise drivers to be alert to enhanced enforcement of school zone speed limits and school zone no parking restrictions. “Again this year you will note an obvious police presence in the schools at various times of the day,” the Gladstone press release said. “Members of the department have met with school administrators and completed a review of safety procedures and operations.” The highway patrol said it was critical for drivers to be

alert, especially near school zones, playgrounds and bike paths. “Traffic patterns will change as school buses and parents taking their children to school join other motorists on the road and affect the morning and afternoon commute,” said a press release from the patrol. “Whatever route you drive, expect this additional traffic and prepare by allowing extra time to reach your destination.” Drivers need to be aware of the increased traffic during this time — not just in areas around school, but all around town.

“Remember: Many of these drivers are inexperienced. It is important to encourage those young drivers to remember driving is a full-time job,” the release said. “Using a cell phone, texting or adjusting the radio can be the distraction that leads to a traffic crash. Texting is against the law for anyone under the age of 22.” Missouri law also states that on a two-lane road, if a school bus is stopped and displaying warning signals while loading or unloading children, drivers must stop when meeting and following the bus. However, it is only necessary to stop on a four-lane highway when following the bus. In 2012, one person was killed and 266 people were injured in school bus crashes. Missouri experienced 777 traffic crashes involving school buses last year. Parents are encouraged to talk to their children about riding a bus or walking to school in a safe manner, and to make sure any child riding a bike wears a helmet and follows traffic laws.

Movie Review: ‘2 Guns’ Bullets, jokes fly as undercover agents find themselves in dirty double cross

2 Guns Starring Denzel Washington & Mark Wahlberg Directed by Baltasar Kormákur R, 109 min. Released Aug. 2, 2013

Two undercover agents get caught between a brutal Mexican drug cartel and shady American government higher-ups in a deadly, dirty double cross in this gritty buddy-comedy action pic based on a series of comic books. DEA agent Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) and U.S. Navy intelligence officer Michael Stigman (Mark Wahlberg) have been working together for three years on busting a ruthless mob kingpin (Edward James Olmos). But both agents are so deep undercover, neither one knows that the other is actually a spy — for someone else. Once their covers are blown, the plot has thickened into a real spook-soup of a mess, where distinctions between good guys and bad guys melt away in the boiling, South-of-theborder sun. Olmos is chillingly effective as the dapper

Mexican don. Bill Paxton plays a drawly Texan with a vicious stake in getting back a stolen $43 million bank heist. James Marsden is Stigman’s Navy superior with his own designs on the loot. Paula Patton, another DEA operative, works “under (the) cover” in more ways than one with Washington’s character. But in this kind of movie, you can count on one thing: Like Trench and Stigman, the two cartel infiltrators who turn out to be spies, anyone might turn out to be someone other than who, or what, you think he or she is going to be. Di rec tor Ba ltasa r Kormákur keeps the dialog snappy and the action peppy. Washington and Wahlberg have a natural, easygoing chemistry that serves them well as they toggle back and forth between verbal quips and more rough-and-tumble shootouts, scuffles and other physically demanding aspects of their roles, including one scene in which they’re beaten as they hang upside down, by their feet, in a pen with an angry bull. But at least they don’t end up like the chickens. Early in the movie, in a

Hometown Content

scene designed to show just what a bunch of “baaaad” hombres make up the Mexican cartel, a bunch of them shoot the heads off live chickens that they’ve buried up to their necks in the dirt. To show he’s just as “baaaad” as they are, Wahlberg’s character grabs one of their pistols and shoots off one of the chicken’s heads, too. Then he makes a quip, and the audience laughs. All in a day’s work for an undercover cop infiltrating a Mexican cartel, I suppose. But that was just one scene in a movie with a whole lot guns more than the two its title suggests, with people holding weapons up to other people’s heads and other body parts, setting off explosions in banks, diners and military installations, and shooting, shooting, shooting. And then joking, joking, joking. Maybe it’s just me, or

maybe it’s the times, but I’m finding it harder and harder to swallow a movie cocktail that tries to make me laugh in between flying bullets and things that go ka-boom, like “cop buddy comedies” have been doing ever since Eddie Murphy and Nick Nolte did it in “48 Hours” back in 1982. “2 Guns” might hit just the right tone of summer escapism for some, but it left me feeling like I needed to escape, indeed, to somewhere far away from the trigger-happy characters, and unsavory places, of a movie like this. And I’m still kinda upset about those chickens.

Man convicted in robbery of undercover deputy Lance Butler of Kansas City was sentenced Aug. 7 to 50 years in prison for robbing an undercover deputy sheriff last year. On May 17, 2012, Butler had arranged a drug sale in a parking lot on Northeast Vivion Road and North Antioch Road. Instead of making the sale, Butler pulled out a gun and robbed the buyer, who was an undercover Clay County sheriff’s deputy working with the county’s drug squad. “Butler made a series of bad decisions,” Clay

County Prosecuting Attorney Dan White. “He decided to sell drugs. After he decided to sell the drugs, he decided no, he’d rob the people buying the drugs.” Butler, 26, was sentenced to consecutive terms of 30 years in prison for first-degree robbery and 20 years in prison for armed criminal action. He was convicted by a jury on June 4. Due to previous convictions and current sentencing provisions, Butler is expected to serve at least 45 years of his 50-year sentence.

Tri-County to celebrate 2 anniversaries, honor residents at annual meeting Tr i- Count y Mental Health Services will commemorate two anniversaries while honoring area volunteers and professionals who make life better for those with mental illness. The Tri-County annual meeting and anniversary celebration will be Monday, Aug. 26, at the Hilton Kansas City. Among those to be recognized are Sharon Callahan as Phoenix Community Achievement Leader; Judge Dennis Eckold for Outstanding Public Official; Eryn Bolek as Provider of the Year; Tish Thomas for Mental Health Professional of the Year;

the Regulated Industries Division of the city of Kansas City as Prevention Partner of the Year; and Riverside Red X as Treatment Partner of the Year. The featured speaker will be Jim Lysaght. A founding member of Tri-County, Sharon Callahan will receive the Phoenix Community Ach ievement honor because of her volunteer service with Tri-County and in numerous projects throughout the community. She served as a member of the area board of directors of the National Alliance on Mental Illness for 27 years and several years on the Clay, Platte

Ray Mental Health Board. Platte County Circuit Judge Dennis Eckhold earned the Outstanding Public Official award for his work establishing the new Platte County DWI Treatment Court. He provided critical support in developing the rigorous and highly successful program that is reducing repeat DWI offenses in Platte County while helping individuals return to productive lives. Provider of the Year Eryn Bolek has served as a community support

worker for 11 years with Skylander, a contracted provider in North Kansas City. Bolek has consistently placed mental health consumers first while adapting to many changes in the mental health care field. M e nt a l Hea lt h Professional of the Year, Tish Thomas, is the leading employment trainer from the University of Missouri and has worked closely with the Department of Mental Health and Tri-County. She is an important support for

Tri-County’s widely recognized Employment Services program, which helps those with a mental illness find jobs. KC Regulated Industries earned the Prevention Partner of the Year award because of its efforts to increase prevention of drug paraphernalia, illegal drugs and underage drinking. Working with Tri-County’s award-winning Prevention Program, it has collaborated to promote community wellness and reduce substance abuse.

Riverside Red X has placed six mental health consumers in competitive employment at the business. Equally important, their open dialogue and open minds have enhanced the lives of those consumers, making Riverside Red X the deserved recipient of this year’s Treatment Partner of the Year. The annual meeting will begin with a social at 6 p.m. RSVP by calling Vicki Ryan at 468-0400 or e-mail vickir@tri-countymhs.org.
