Two months ago, Arvest Bank launched its annual 1 Million Meals initiative to help fight hunger in the 120 communities it serves. With the help of customers and communities, the bank has exceeded the campaign goal by raising more than 1.8 million meals in the fight against hunger. In the Kansas City metro area, Arvest partnered with Harvesters-The Community Food Network for the campaign. The organization, which serves 26 counties, received all local contributions, including $16,509 in monetary donations and 3,952 non-perishable food items, which equates to 92,425 meals. Arvest Bank associates also donated almost 300 hours to Harvesters by working a variety of volunteer shifts during the two month initiative.

The state minimum wage will be $7.50 starting Jan. 1, 2014, in accordance with state law. All businesses are required to pay the minimum hourly rate, except retail and service businesses whose annual gross sales are less than $500,000 according to a press release from the Missouri Department of Labor. Per state law, the minimum wage rate is calculated once a year and may increase or decrease based on the cost of living as measured by the previous year’s Consumer Price Index. Missouri law does not allow the state’s minimum wage rate to be lower than the federal minimum wage rate, which has been $7.25 since July 2009. Missouri’s 2013 minimum wage is $7.35. It had been $7.25 from July 2009 through the end of 2012. Compensation for tipped employees in Missouri must also total at least $7.50 per hour starting in 2014. Employers are required to pay tipped employees at least 50 percent of the

Constitution: County Commission ready to refocus Continued from Page A1 instead of elected. Opponents of the constitution were quick to target the tax rate, appointment of positions and the planned transition period as flaws of the proposal. Claims included that the 14-cent cap would drastically cut funding for county’s mental health, developmental disabilities and senior citizens levies. Constitution drafters repeatedly said the cap would have no effect on those groups, as they were separate political subdivisions. “There’s got to be a real solid basis to make big, big changes, and we had groups from such varied backgrounds that just said there are problems with this proposal, Eastern County Commissioner Luann Ridgeway said, noting concerns raised by local mental health and developmental disability organizations. Earlier this fall, Ridgeway, along with fellow commissioners Pam Mason and Gene Owen, attempted to remove the constitution proposal from the ballot with a lawsuit filed in September. The county commissioners would eventually take their challenge to the Missouri State Supreme Court, although the court chose not to take up their petition. The non-action

allowed the vote to take place as scheduled, which Ridgeway said allowed voters to make their judgment on the issue. “I truly believe the voters dug in and did their homework on the issue. People in Clay County have a lot of common sense, Ridgeway said. In the final weeks before the election, both sides of the issue attempted to make their cases to the public through mailed fliers. A flyer from anti-constitution group The Voters Have Spoken drew sharp criticism the weekend before the election for claiming the county’s school districts would be closed beginning Nov. 6 if the constitution were to pass. School districts quickly discredited the claim. “I think the saddest part is sending out a mailer that said schools would close without talking to the schools, constitution commissioner Kim Murphy said. “The schools all quickly said, ‘No way this will happen.’ Ridgeway stated she did not know who created and distributed the flyer. Other fliers from the group claimed elements of the county government would be forced to shut down until the new county council took office next May. “We knew that it would be this way, but (the opposition) really did exceed

what anyone thought they would do. The saddest part is they preyed on the most vulnerable citizens with the mental health and developmental disabilities boards and then tried to scare people about schools, Suter said. “It worked, but it’s a terrible thing to do to your

community. Members of the Clay County Constitution Commission have stood by their document, stating the claims against it were invalid. “We could have clarified the tax issue a bit, but I don’t think that it should have been an issue. With

and the county commissioners were ready to refocus on other county matters. “I tend to be one of those people that say once the election’s over, ‘I’m pleased with result, and now it’s time to move forward,’ Ridgeway said. “I have already started to do that.

the transition issue, I don’t know how they read it would close down the government in that language, constitution commissioner David Ramsay said. “Even if we had written it differently, they would have found something else to pick at. With the election complete, Ridgeway said she

Your Cardiac Connection

Connected to you.

Taking the time. Twelve years ago when James had chest pain and went to meet with Dr. Maragos, an interventional cardiologist at Liberty Hospital, he expected to have a short visit, to be tested and diagnosed. What he didn’t expect was the extra time Dr. Maragos took learning more about his life and background as a veteran.

Details can make the difference. Details given in one such conversation uncovered a condition that may have gone unnoticed and become dangerous if not detected and corrected early. Taking the time to do it right is a physician’s personal connection to his patients. These are the same connections Liberty Hospital provides to our patients and community every day.

Continued from Page A1 Canuteson said creation of a world-class business environment is both a goal and a means to other ends. “Building a world-class economic environment will help grow our economy and lead us to more job growth and quality of life, he said. “If we’re able to do that, we believe we can achieve our mission. EDC Chairman Tony Reinhart noted Clay County already has a good economic mix, including technology firms such as Cerner and leading manufacturing companies such as Ford Motor Co. “There’s a lot of activity in and around Clay County and we need to tap into that, he said. The Strategic Plan will target creation and attraction of 50 new companies and 5,000 jobs over the next 10 years. In coming months, action teams will be assembled to focus on areas such as targeted industries, targeted facilities, quality of life, entrepreneurial culture and business development.
