By Ryne Dittmer Mid-Continent Public Library CEO and Library Director Steve Potter presented the library system’s annual report to the Clay County Commission on Oct. 21. During his remarks, Potter said MidContinent had experienced a successful year in terms of finances and services. Potter begin his presentation discussing the library system’s annual audit. “Our auditors provided their report without comment or opinion. This is otherwise known as a clean audit,� he said. “The report shows that Mid-Continent’s revenues increased slightly in 2013 versus 2012.� In relation to finances, Mid-Continent was awarded the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting from the Government Finance Officers Association for its fiscal year reports. This was the second recognition in as many years for the library system. “This is a standard we will continue to try to live up to in future years,� Potter said.

Linden Square will light up Tuesday, Nov. 26, for the holiday season. The public is invited to join Mayor Jean Moore and the Gladstone City Council at 6:30 p.m. for the lighting of this year’s Mayor’s Christmas Tree. At the ceremony, donations will be collected to benefit the Northland Christmas Store, Get Kids Connected Scholarships,

Gladstone Neighbors Helping Neighbors and the Gladstone Animal Shelter. Pumpkin Head Harvey, the winner of the inaugural Friends of the Atkins-Johnson Farm Scarecrow Contest, also is scheduled to make his final public appearance of the fall. The Linden Square Ice Skating rink will be open starting at 5 p.m. the day of the lighting. Pumpkin Head Harvey makes a stop at Commerce Bank. The winning entry in the Friends of the AtkinsJohnson Farm Scarecrow Contest has been making the rounds in Gladstone since Gladfest. His last scheduled stop is the Mayor’s Tree Lighting on Tuesday, Nov. 26.

Steve Potter, CEO and director of Mid-Continent Public Library, gave the library system’s annual report to the Clay County Commission on Oct. 21. The presentation included an update on MidContinent’s finances and circulation figures, including notes on the Woodneath Library Center, which opened to the public in June. In terms of service, Potter said Mid-Continent loaned 9.1 million items over the past year. The figure averages to 12 items borrowed for each person in the MidContinent service area. The libraries also recorded 4.5 million visits collectively. Electronic circulation grew in the ebook category with an increase from 210,000 to 414,000 items and a 10 percent growth in patron use of licensed online resources. The increase in services
