News in Brief Meal cost down slightly for Thanksgiving Missouri shoppers can expect to pay less than last year for the ingredients needed to prepare a traditional Thanksgiving Day meal for 10 people, with some leftovers. The average cost this year is $48.61, according to a Missouri Farm Bureau, compared to $51.87 last year, for a savings of $3.26. The menu includes a 16-pound turkey, bread stuffing, sweet potatoes, rolls with butter, peas, cranberries, a relish tray, pumpkin pie with whipped cream and beverages of coffee and milk. Most items decreased in price this year with the exception of sweet potatoes, milk and whipping cream. The increases were slight and offset by the reduced price of other items. According to Diane Olson, Missouri Farm Bureau Director of Promotion and Education Programs, turkey is the centerpiece of this meal and the average per pound price for the bird dropped by 18 cents. “This makes a significant impact on the overall cost, Olson says. The American Farm Bureau reports the supply of turkeys in cold storage is about 4 percent higher today compared to a year ago and on-farm production of turkeys remains strong. These factors impact turkey prices at the store. The cost of the same meal reported by the American Farm Bureau was $49.04. This makes the meal in the Show Me State 43 cents less than the national average.

Trout stocked at local lakes The Missouri Department of Conservation recently stocked rainbow trout at two Northland Parks and in three lakes at the James A. Reed Memorial Wildlife Area in Lee’s Summit. Rainbow trout require cool water year round and are not native to the metro area. But in winter, water temperatures drop and stocking trout provides a close-to-home opportunity for anglers. A lake at the Fountain Bluffs Sports Complex in Liberty received 1,000 trout. The park is at is at 2200 E. Old Missouri Highway 210, east of Missouri Highway 291. In Kansas City’s park system, MDC stocked 875 rainbows in Chaumiere Lake. That park and is near Interstate 35 and the intersection of North Cleveland Avenue and Northeast 43rd Terrace in Kansas City North. Anglers can catch rainbow trout with spinning, spin casting or fly fishing tackle. Small spinners, flies or scented baits are all effective lures for catching trout. But if a large fish breaks

Gladstone man, 73, indicted for child porn A Gladstone man has been indicted by a federal grand jury for producing, distributing and possessing child pornography. Barry Alan Darlington, 73, was charged in a fivecount indictment returned under seal by a federal grand jury Thursday, Nov. 14. That indictment was unsealed and made public upon Darlington’s arrest and initial court appearance Friday, Nov. 15. Darlington was in federal custody pending a detention hearing scheduled for Wednesday, Nov. 20, according to Tammy Dickinson, U.S. attorney for the Western District of Missouri.
Darlington is charged with three counts of producing child pornography over a three-year period. The federal indictment alleges that Darlington used a minor to produce child pornography between June 1, 2001, and May 1, 2004. The indictment also alleges that Darlington distributed child pornography over the Internet in September 2005 and that he was in possession of child pornography on July 18, 2013. In seeking to have Darling ton detained without bail, the gover n ment contended that he had indicated a
continuing sexual interest in other children and has destroyed evidence. According to the gover nment ’s detention motion, Darlington furthered the exploitation of his child victim by distributing some of the images he produced over the Internet. Investigators also found in Darlington’s possession multiple additional images and movies of the sexual abuse of other children, including babies. Online chat logs indicate that Darlington distributed other, “commercial” (that is, not self-produced) child pornography to others over the Internet.
The detention motion also cites online chats in which Darlington admitted he had been ogling a young neighbor girl and tried to arrange for her to spend the night at his house. Darlington says in those chats that he loves to go to malls and look at “young folks,” and that he “checks out the kids” when he’s at the grocery store. The government plans to produce evidence that Darlington destroyed a computer hard drive after being confronted by law enforcement with evidence that he possessed child pornography. Dickinson said the charges contained in the
sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who sexually exploit children, and to identify and rescue victims. indictment are accusations and not evidence of guilt. Evidence supporting the charges must be presented to a federal trial jury, whose duty is to determine guilt or innocence. This case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Katharine Fincham. It was investigated by Gladstone Police Department and the Western Missouri Cyber Crimes Task Force. This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice to combat the growing epidemic of child

priority “bills” that will be group’s main focus in 2014. The list of priorities includes increased funding for home-delivered or congregate meals at senior centers, increased funding for Area Agencies on Aging for senior transportation services and an increased amount for personal assets allowed for MoHealthNet eligibility. Other priorities include instituting a Silver Alert system similar to the Amber Alert system for missing children, and
supplying letters of guardianship to grandparents who are primary caretakers. Some of the other items discussed by the legislature included pay day loans and the banning of hand-held cell phones while driving. Members of the Silver Haired Legislature serve without pay. Elections are held in May, when seniors elect three senators and 12 representatives from each of 10 area agencies on aging. To become a senator
or representative of the Silver Haired Legislature, residents must be 60 years or older and have resided at least six months in the area they wish to represent. Library: StoryCenter to allow patrons to record, print stories Continued from Page A1 for its achievement in public relations and marketing with the John Cotton Dana Award from the American Library Association in April. The organization also received the Kansas City Business Journal’s Impact Award
for its online governance management site. Looking toward the future, Potter said MidContinent will continue to grow its summer reading program and introduce new collection management technology. Future plans also include the opening of
the StoryCenter at the Woodneath facility. At the StoryCenter, patrons will be able to record oral histories and print their own books. The center will include a on-demand
book publisher capable of printing a 250-page book in three minutes. “This is a unique program that will help people tell their stories,” Potter said. “We think this is so
important. Part of literacy is people being able to articulate what they think.” Pot ter said the efforts are part of MidContinent’s dedication to
providing for the needs of its patrons. “Mid-Continent Public library continues to ride the tide rather than being drowned by a wave of change,” he said.

New plaza makes landing at county airport
Ryne Dittmer/Staff Photo
Ryne Dittmer/Staff Photo
Eastern Clay County Commissioner Luann Ridgeway, county airport advisory board Chairman Mark Vanloh, Western Commissioner Gene Owen, Presiding Commissioner Pam Mason and Ron Minnick of McCray Lumber took part in a ribbon-cutting for a new plaza at the county’s Midwest National Air Center, 13106 Rhodus Road in Excelsior Springs, on Thursday, Nov. 14. The plaza includes a flagpole from the former B-25 assembly plant in Fairfax, Kan., and a donated B-25 bomber propeller. Materials and labor for the plaza were donated by McCray Lumber, Marshall Whitmore of M.J.W. Concrete, Ideker Inc. and Geiger Ready-Mix Co.
The flagpole stood at the Fairfax B-25 plant for more than 40 years before moving to the Midwest National Air Center. “I want to thank the people that donated to this project. It’s going to be really nice for people to see this when they come to the air center,” Western District Commmissioner Gene Owen said. “It looks really good, and I’m proud of it.”
