Keystone Awards honor top Clay Co. developments
Gladstone Recipients Dentistry for Children Dentistry for Children, 7001 N. Cherry St., relocated to its new commercial building in early 2013. The two-and-a-half-story structure was one of the first new buildings of the Gladstone Village Center master plan. The public-private project is just west of City Hall. “A $44 million project, the development created 29 new jobs,” according to a Keystone Awards pamphlet. “The building features many sustainable design elements, while establishing a presence for the new Gladstone city center.”
Linden Square, Dentistry for Children in Gladstone among recipients By Dale Garrison Projects that have boosted Clay County jobs and quality of life were recognized Dec. 10 with Keystone Recognition Awards presented by the Clay County Economic Development Council. The event drew nearly 300 people to Harrah’s North Kansas City. Led by a special Keystone Vision Award to Briarcliff developers Patty and Charles Garney, the awards recognized businesses and organizations that improved the economic environment and quality of life through new locations or expansion during 2013. The financial aspect alone is significant: developments nominated for Keystone Awards represented more than $2 billion in Clay County investments. The diversity of projects was also significant. Besides Briarcliff, other honorees
included Ford Motor Co., which invested $1.1 billion and brought the area 1,600 new jobs. Other Keystone honorees were Adrian Steel-Hunt Midwest Business Center, Kansas City; Ball’s Price Chopper No. 21, Kansas City; Dentistry for Children, Gladstone; Dick’s Sporting Goods, Liberty; Holland 1916 Inc., Liberty; KC Custom Cabine., Smithville; Linden Square, Gladstone; L.P.G. Ventures, Kearney; Magna Seating, Excelsior Springs; McCrite Plaza at Briarcliff, Kansas City; Mosaic Life Care at Shoal Creek, Kansas City; North Kansas City Hospital, Emergency Department; Northland Cathedral Campus, Kansas City; Northland Sonic, Kearney; Owen Homes LLC, Smithville; The Gardens at Northgate Village—Phase III Rainen Cos., North Kansas City; and Woodneath Library Center, Kansas City. Two special honors were
also announced, one to the Missouri Department of Transportation and the second to a collaborative team comprised of the City of Kansas City, the Kansas City Tax Increment Financing Commission, Hunt Midwest and the North Kansas City Schools. That team was honored for fast tracking a major Northland roadway, Northeast 108th Street. MoDOT was honored for the 96th Street and 108th Street interchanges over U.S. Highway 169, plus the Flintlock Flyover and Missouri Highway 291 exchange with I-35 between Liberty and Kansas City. The meeting also included a year-end review of Clay County and the EDC by Chair Tony Reinhart. Reinhart thanked the EDC’s many volunteer members and stressed the success of collaboration and networking promoted by the Development Council. He

Linden Square The $1.2 million Linden Square project is one of the tangible results of more than 30 years of discussion about the importance creating a sense of place, including a downtown city center, in Gladstone. In 2013 the city officially opened Linden Square Outdoor Pavilion, ice skating rink and amphitheater. The site plays host to free weekly concerts in the spring and summer, and skating on synthetic ice in colder months. The Linden Square project is credited with spurring an additional $30 million in investment, new jobs and quality of life. “This project has helped spur other developments such as Dentistry for Children and the new Heights luxury apartment project,” the pamphlet said.

Residents are asked to exercise patience as they continue to work until all of the streets have been cleared or treated. All motorists also are being asked to exercise caution in their travels during any winter storm event. Drivers following a snow-removal vehicle should follow at a safe distance and not attempt to pass. Drivers also should adjust to driving at slower speeds to facilitate a safe arrival at their destinations, even when operating a four-wheel-drive vehicle. “If you do not have to go out, stay in and enjoy the warmth of your home,” the release states.

During the winter months, the roads can become unsafe and require extra maintenance in the form of snow removal and treatment for slick conditions. When driving conditions are hazardous, Gladstone residents are encourage to limit driving to avoid potential accidents, according to a city press release. Residents are asked during those times when winter weather prevails to park all vehicles somewhere off the road, in a driveway, to make snow removal and treatment of street surfaces easier. A vehicle parked on the street during snow removal operations could result in it being blocked by the windrow created by the plowing process. As a reminder the priority for snow removal and street treatment processes are: • Emergency snow routes

Future Leaders Academy seeks applicants The city of Gladstone will host the Future Leaders Academy beginning Thursday, Jan. 9. This program is designed to provide an in-depth look at the inner workings of municipal government, its operational components and service delivery mechanisms.
The mission statement for the program is: “To proactively reach out and educate Gladstone Citizens about city government, plans and programs that are offered while allowing the voice of the citizen to be heard through open communications
and suggestions. To support progress with action that identifies the future leaders of Gladstone by providing the opportunity to lead through participation not only locally but on a regional level as well. If success is measured by

News in Brief Gladstone seniors donate $150 to Trees for My City The Gladstone Seniors Advisory Board has donated $150 to the Trees For My City Program. “We want to help make our city beautiful, board member Gail Swenson said. These funds will be matched by the Dunn Family Foundation, effectively adding $300 to the funds earmarked for tree planting in Gladstone. When the Gladstone’s fund reaches $1,000 the Heartland Tree Alliance will coordinate a tree planting event. The current fund balance is $700, according to a city press release. “Further donations of just $150, when doubled, will complete the $1,000 minimum, and there will be new trees for Gladstone parks this spring, the release states. This program is accessible at TreesForMycity. com. Once the online payment form has been completed, the donor will be directed to a page with a tax receipt and printable certificates for those who want to
donate in honor of a loved one. For more information, contact Noel Morris at the Heartland Tree Alliance at 561-1087.
MGE seeks to raise surcharge Missouri Gas Energy, a division of Laclede Gas Company, has filed an application with the Missouri Public Service Commission seeking to adjust the infrastructure system replacement surcharge on the bills of its natural gas customers. The surcharge first appeared on customer bills in April 2004. MGE is seeking the adjustment to reflect
infrastructure replacement investments made by the natural gas company since January 2013, according to a press release. These costs for natural gas pipeline replacements and relocations are not currently included in MGE’s rates. The current ISRS for residential customers is 96 cents a month. MGE proposes to increase the ISRS to $1.19 a month. Applications to
intervene and participate in this case must be filed no later than Tuesday, Dec. 31, with the secretary of the Missouri Public Service Commission, P.O. Box 360, Jefferson City, MO 65102, or by using the commission’s Electronic Filing and Information System. MGE provides natural gas service to approximately 500,000 customers in Missouri.

“I was reading Mid Rivers Newsmagazine when I saw the article about donating a Christmas tree for the governor’s mansion,” said Floetta, age 76. “I thought this was the perfect chance.” According to the Carreras, they wanted to have the tree removed within the next couple of years anyway, as they thought it had grown too big for their yard. The couple has lived at their current home for 20 years. The tree was already there when they moved in. “I used to decorate it every year myself,” said Jose, age 78, “but it eventually got so big I couldn’t even do it with an extension ladder. That’s when I stopped.” According to Jose, the tree was about 7 feet tall when they bought the home.
