Nominations sought for senior service award Missouri Lt. Governor Peter Kinder is seeking

nominations for the Lieutenant Governor’s Senior Service Award, given each year to seniors who volunteer in their communities. A winner will be selected from each of Missouri’s 34 Senatorial Districts, and the winners will be recognized at a banquet in the Capitol. Kinder created the award to promote and highlight service Missouri’s senior citizens provide their communities. “As the official senior advocate for the state of Missouri, these awards give me an opportunity to publicize positive stories about seniors,” Kinder said. “The Senior Service Award is a way I can shine the spotlight on seniors who have uplifting and inspirational stories to tell.” Nomination forms are available online at www. ltgov.mo.gov, under the “Senior Service Awards” tab, or can be obtained by calling 573-751-4727. Nominees should be at least 60 years of age and volunteer a minimum of 25 hours per year. The deadline for nominations is March 31. “There are thousands

of Missourians whose lives are touched by the unselfish work and caring hands of volunteering seniors,” Kinder said. “These seniors offer their time and labor back to the community, and I want to bring these stories to the public, so we can all thank them for their work.”

Statewide Tornado Drill rescheduled for March 6 The National Weather Service has postponed the Missouri Statewide

Tornado Drill until Thursday, March 6, at 1:30 p.m. The weather service says the postponement is due to the winter weather and other factors. The change to Thursday, which was the backup date, is for the entire state of Missouri. The original drill was set for Tuesday, March 4 The 40th annual statewide drill is part of Missouri 2014 Severe Weather Awareness Week, March 3 to 7. On March 6, Missouri outdoor warning sirens will sound, indicating that Missourians should seek shelter during the statewide tornado drill. The safest shelter location is the basement or

an interior room in the lowest level of a building. The drill is complete once everyone is accounted for in the designated shelters. Missouri’s Stormaware. mo.gov website includes detailed videos showing how to react to flash flooding and tornadoes and shelter in specific types of buildings — houses with and without basements, mobile homes, schools — and important information about tornado sirens and weather alert radios. The site also includes links to free severe weather texting services that can alert people across Missouri to upcoming severe weather.

Community Voices

Patchwork history Some very talented people gathered recently at the Clay County Museum and Historical Society to discuss “Clay County Quilts,” the study group’s inaugural topic for 2014. Along with helpful quilting techniques and interesting stories, some beautiful works of art were shared. An antique quilt stretcher that had been donated to the museum was also on display. “Stitch in a ditch” and “echo quilting” are just a couple of the many quilting terms discussed at the meeting. “Stitch in a ditch” refers to stitching a piece or appliqué so that the stitches don’t show on a finished quilt. Echo quilting, or trace stitching, is a free-motion stitch that is a uniform distance from a fabric piece or appliqué that adds emphasis to the quilt’s design. A demonstration on tying knots to bind the two sides of a quilt together was given by Donna Kitterman. She taught herself a technique that allows the knots to be made without turning a large, bulky quilt over and back each time a knot is made. Lori Gorham offered some suggestions for machine quilters to maximize the life of their machines and ease of their technique: change a sewing machine needle after eight hours of use, and clean and oil machines regularly. She also advised people to label their quilts to give others a sense of connection to the quilt and the seamstress. Gorham also shared some quilts she had made, including a rag quilt made from blue-jeans, a 3-D quilt that was viewed through 3D glasses with amazing effects, a T-shirt quilt made from shirts from her son’s high school, and a kaleidoscope quilt. Linda Mangels shared some interesting facts she had read about quilts made during the Civil War and their hidden messages. She suggested two books — “Hidden in Plain View” by Jacqueline Tobin and Raymond Dobard, and “Facts and Fabrications”

JANA BECKER

by Barbara Brackman — on how slaves sewed quilts with special meanings and used them to navigate their escape on the Underground Railroad. Mangels also shared her Route 66 T-shirt quilt, which was recently on display in the museum’s window. Jean Warren shared a flying geese quilt she had made by hand, a reproduction of a quilt from Texas from the Civil War, and an actual flying geese quilt made in the 1840s that was in remarkably good condition. Warren rescues antique quilts whenever she finds them and considers them treasures to be shared and enjoyed. She shared an interesting fact that during the Civil War, the U.S. Army commissioned 250,000 quilts for its soldiers’ comfort. “This “comfort” became known as “comforter,” another word for “quilt.” Discussions also included how frontier quilting bees, where women got together to sew quilts, were opportunities for those living in isolated communities to socialize and catch up on the latest news. It was noted that quilts could be used as teaching aids for children who could be challenged to find matching patterns, blocks, and colors. Museum Curator Jay Thorn shared a friendship quilt from 1927 that belonged to Virginia Sevier and was donated to the Clay County Museum by her daughter Marilyn Sevier Evans. The quilt was made by hand and contains embroidered signatures of the members of Clay County’s Walnut Grove Community Club. It is on display at the museum. It was noted that friendship quilts and crazy quilts (made of many pieces of different

Jean Warren discusses one of the quilts she has made. Quilts were the topic of discussion for the first Clay County Museum and Historical Society study group meeting of 2014. Thorn also shared with the group an antique sawhorse-style quilt frame donated to the museum by Betty Jean Arthur in 2003. The frame includes two sawhorses with 10 holes equally spaced along the top where the quilt was held by hickory pegs and then stretched in length to allow easy sewing access to both sides. The frame had belonged to Arthur’s grandmother, Christine Irminger of Paradise, Mo., born in 1864. The Clay County Museum and Historical Society is currently holding a raffle for the chance to win three “comforters” — a cross-stitch quilt, a block quilt in a diamond pattern made by Donna Kitterman and Linda Mangels, and a Historic Liberty Throw displaying different historical buildings in Liberty. The comforters are on display at the Clay County Museum, 14 N. Main St. in Liberty, Missouri. Tickets may be purchased at the museum for $10 each. Only 100 tickets will be sold.

Oak Park journalism instructor earns national master certification Oak Park High School’s journalism teacher, Christina Geabhart, has earned Master Journalism Education certification at the national level. The Journalism Education Association recently approved Geabhart as a Master Journalism Educator. She will be recognized, with other national-level certified teachers, at a ceremony at the spring JEA/NSPA convention April 12 in San Diego. Geabhart previously earned her national certification in 2005, and has since renewed it twice. For the initial national certification, Geabhart had to meet rigorous standards set out by the JEA Certification Commission, including, being certified in journalism at Christina Geabhart the state level and completing 18 or more hours of college course work advising, among other criteria. in news writing and reporting, comFor this Master Journalism Educator munications law, and publications certification, Geabhart had to go well

beyond those initial requirements. She had to be recommended by a principal or supervisor, have at least five years of journalism teaching completed and have completed a master-level project. For that project, she created a professional development presentation that any journalism or other teacher anywhere could easily personalize for their school or district and use quickly to encourage their teachers to also use news media across the curriculum. Geabhart also had to complete an application process proving experience and commitment to the field and an essay test. Geabhart is the only journalism teacher in the district to hold MJE status, however three other NKC Schools journalism teachers hold national CJE status, including North Kansas City High School’s Mary Prichard and Staley’s Cherie Burgett and Megan Cleveland.

When Tara Prosser locked eyes with her Weimaraner, Lily,

five years ago in that pet shop in Joplin, she felt, in that moment, the hands of fate. That puppy was meant to be her dog, her Lily, she knew this, yet she could never have foreseen the unexpected journey that single moment would inspire.

Tara and Lily live here, in Joplin, Missouri. Two heroes tucked into a tiny corner of a heartland hometown. When Lily was rushed to the veterinary ICU in her first bout with Addison’s Disease, no one thought she was going to survive. But she did survive. She lived to see her hometown of Joplin annihilated, only one short month after her illness. She lived to walk out onto the remains of those streets, despite the heat, the rain, the glass and the ruins and fight her good fight for Tara, and for the city of Joplin. Lily is not a perfectly healthy dog. She gets monthly injections. She has trouble, sometimes, handling the heat. Yet she is alive to sniff the wind and wag her tail and run in all of her rousing Weimaraner glory. Lily is not a perfectly healthy dog. But she is going to be OK.

CHAPTER 8: Hope Driving the streets of Joplin today is like driving through two cities. On the outskirts of town are the original brick homes, a few storefronts, a few trees or perhaps a garden. But the middle is a

“Retiring Lily has crossed my mind,” Tara said. “But she wants to work. Someday she will tell me she has had enough, but I do not think that day is today!” So, for now Lily is going to live right, train hard and fight the good fight.

And Joplin will too. “Lily’s Story” was adapted from author Carolyn Mueller’s hardback children’s book, “Lily: A True Story of Courage and the Joplin Tornado,” published with Reedy Press and available April 2014 wherever books are sold.

Tara and Lily have a motto. “Live right, train hard, and fight the good fight.” They have found their “good fight” in their search and rescue work, a challenge that has led them to search for those who are lost and bring closure to the loved ones of many, despite whatever obstacles have stood in their way.

There is a great, gaping, muddy hole where there used to be a high school. Near this pit, the painted tree still stands. It is leafless, its rainbow splotched bare branches reach skyward as its many birdhouses sway lightly in the breeze. J

Today, in Joplin, the hammers never stop. The rebuilding hasn’t stopped. People still grocery shop, go to work in the morning, walk their dogs, buy their coffee and go to school. Life hasn’t stopped and neither has Lily.
