It’s an innovative idea: bring the city and local school district into a partnership designed to benefit students and the community. In 2007, North Kansas City Schools and the city of Gladstone did just that when they jointly built an indoor aquatic facility to enable year-round swim lessons and to provide a home for high school swim teams. And the community partners are about to do it again. City officials and school administrators on Tuesday, March 11, debuted plans for

their latest collaboration, Northland Innovation Campus. “We have a pretty good history of partnership, and we’re expanding on it,” said Superintendent Todd White. The St udents in Academically Gif ted Education and Northland Center for Advanced Professional Studies will have space in the campus, addressing a classroom shortage in North Kansas City Schools while lessening the district’s debt load by collaborating on a shared space. “Leasing space not only provides a learning environment tailored to the specific needs of these programs, but it also helps address some of our crowding issues across the district,” White said. “With more open classrooms, we can hire more teachers and lighten the load on class sizes.” More classroom space is needed to accommodate the steadily growing district enrollment of 250 to 300 new resident students a year.
