Arcobasso’s serves taste of St. Louis in Northland

Arcobasso’s Restaurant

Restaurant adds Sunday hours, offers thin-crust pizza, other Italian-American fare By Amy Neal Joe and Diane Arcobasso have tried to leave the restaurant business, but after developing a taste for feeding people, they can’t stay out of the kitchen. The couple opened their latest venture, Arcobasso’s Restaurant, in Gladstone last summer and extended their hours of operation to include Sundays in December. Promotional materials describe it as a neighborhood family-style place that welcomes all ages. Diane said they want their customers to consider Arcobasso’s a weekly hangout where they can enjoy a good meal, not a place reserved only for special occasions. “We’re all about family and community,” Diane said. “Everyone comes in and talks to everyone.” The Italian-American menu includes St. Louis-style thin-crust pizza, pasta, chicken entrées, salads, sandwiches, appetizers, beer and wine. There is also a kids menu. “We condensed our menu to have a more medium price point,” Diane said. Joe said the pizza offered in Gladstone wasn’t available at their other restaurants, but their food-preparation techniques are family traditions.

“We do the same things we did when my uncle opened up in 1971,” he said. Since Tom Arcobasso opened a restaurant in North St. Louis County in 1972, several other relatives have gotten into the business, opening Domenico’s in Florissant, Paisano’s in St. Louis, Drassina’s in St. Louis, Concetta’s in St. Charles, Domenico’s at the Lake in Osage Beach, Domenico’s in Jefferson City, Arcobasso’s in South St. Louis, Dairy Delight in Washington, Mo., and T. Arcobasso’s in St. Charles. Joe and Diane Arcobassos’ journey to the Northland began when they sold their longtime St. Louis restaurant about nine years ago. “We wanted to go somewhere new and be close to our kids,” Joe said. The couple’s son lives in the metro area, and their daughter planned to move here. While that hasn’t happened yet, she did help her parents open Arcobasso’s and train its staff. “We instill in (the staff) that this is your home away from home,” Diane said. The restaurant employs about 20 to 25 workers, 10 of whom have fulltime schedules, including Joe and Diane. Restaurant/Page A4
