was never any doubt. One might ask why there is so much going on related to an outlaw whose reputation preceded him to many cities during his career as a bank robber and train robber. One answer, debated to this day, is that he was like a local Robin Hood. Rumor has it that James was noted for taking from rich carpetbaggers and Yankees to give to much more supposedly deserving Missouri farmers.
What we know for sure is that Kearney hosts a festival bringing a large collection of people from all walks of life together. They gather, not to pay tribute to an outlaw, but to be reminded of an historical era that had a great impact on our country and local community. Each year, during the third weekend of September, the festival kicks off in Jesse James Park, located north of downtown off Missouri Highway 33.

All entrants also may ride on a parade trailer after the contest. He got to be a cowboy,” she said. “We had always heard about the Little Mr. and Miss contest, and every parent thinks their child is cute and could win, so we entered. equally distributes the body weight throughout the bubble,” he said. “Your feet and legs are out of the bubble and you run and play a game of soccer, or other games, depending on age or selection. It is kind of like having your own bumper car. It’s a cross between a bumper-car ride and a 21st century pillow fight.” While the most vicious of pillow fights might cause some bodily harm, Dickerson said bubble soccer is one of the safer sporting activities available. “Once the parents see how safe it is — because there is no body-to-body collisions, no more concussion discussions for outdoor sports — it is doing very well, Dickerson said. “Parents like it because you can do parents versus the kids. Schools like it because principals invite us he “Beautiful Game” just got a radical face lift. Bubble soccer is starting to take the nation by storm, giving competitors of any age the chance to have in for incentive,” Dickerson said. Dickerson, after speaking with the Jesse James Festival Board, knew that his brand of soccer would be fun while exercising. Mike Dickerson, the senior administrator of Northland Bubble Soccer and a former youth minister, a perfect fit for the event. “I believe I was talking with Julie Hedges with the Jesse James Committee, a super nice lady, and she had a singular goal in mind when bringing the sport to the metro area: keep children active. “It was designed to get kids off of tech and outside playing,” Dickerson said. “We kind of tried to take it said, ‘We want the bubble soccer here. We think it would be good.’ It is the hot new item for flash and substance at your festival,” Dickerson said. Soccer is available between the playground and rodeo areas. a step further to where we could get kids outside to interact and get back to simple fellowship.” Dickerson said currently there are over 90 cities in the United States that have some form of bubble soccer organization. istory, culture and tradition will be on display at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19, as Haskell University Native American dancers perform at Jesse James Park. The dancers, all students at the university, will provide an educational and interactive presentation, junior and president of the school’s student senate, Chris Sindone said. “We used to dance in our regalia and do performances for our elementary school. I’ve also danced for the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” he said. “I really enjoy doing this.” The performance will begin with a grand entrance, during which each dancer will display their style of dance during a unified song. “The grand entrance is to show each style in one song,” Sindone said. “We go in there in full regalia, head to toe. We’ll each be dif-
ferent according to our tribe. Each tribe has a different regalia.” After the grand entrance, each dancer will speak about their regalia and dance before taking the stage as individuals. “We will explain the type of regalia we have and who made it and the designs. Then we’ll exhibit our own styles,” Sindone said. Sindone said his dance, the prairie chicken dance, originated in the northern plains. “It is a traditional mating dance. We go out there and imitate the prairie chicken during their mating season. The male likes to dance and be seen because they’re trying to find their mate,” Sindone said, adding his regalia matches the energy of the dance. “I have a lot of bells, long feathers and bright colors. I like to dance that personally because it’s the most fun. I have a blast dancing that.” Ryne Dittmer The Kearney Courier County Editor

tacey Robinson did not set out to become an artist. The former construction worker was cutting firewood over 30 years ago when he had an idea: What else can I do with my chainsaw? “One day I just stood a piece of (wood) up and ended up playing around with it. When I was done, I had a little cowboy,” Robinson said. “I set him on the porch and people would drive by and wave at it. Then they would pull in and say, ‘Can you do this or can you do that?’” Robinson, even to this day, said he’s not certain why he created that cowboy all those years ago. “When I was doing it to start with, I had no idea what I was doing or why,” he said. “Something just drove me to do it, and I have put more into it than anything I have in my life. I can’t explain why.” Robinson, who currently resides in Montgomery City, established Robinson Chainsaw Carving as his full-time profession 17 years ago, but it was on his father’s land that he first realized he had an artistic touch. “My dad had bought a place that had a lot of timber on it and had it logged. We had all this wood laying there, so I started cutting the firewood and selling it. There were some beautiful pieces of wood. That is what I think started it all was I couldn’t stand to see the (wood) go to waste,” Robinson said. Robinson said oak, white oak or cedar make the best carvings due to the character of the logs. “You can take a piece of pine and carve something, but it has no color or character to it, and it doesn’t last as well as the hard woods,” Robinson said. “I always use something that is dead. I never cut down anything that is green. To me, that defeats the purpose of the whole thing.” Over his 30 years carving, Robinson said he has gone through as much transformation as the pieces he creates. “When I first started, I would go to the woods and carve. I couldn’t do it in front of anybody. I didn’t have the confidence, I guess,” Robinson said. His favorite subjects to fashion are wildlife and western motif. “One of the pieces I was the most proud of was a logger had a walnut log that was like seven feet and had a fork in it. It was big, but not something he could sell,” Robinson said. “I took it home and carved an Indian with a full headdress on a horse rearing with another Indian underneath on his knees. They both had their tomahawks and knives. That was probably the piece I would say I was most proud of.” Robinson, a mainstay at the Jesse James Festival, said he can complete most pieces in half an hour, giving bystanders the opportunity to see the entire process. The carver, who said he’s never been injured with his chainsaw due to his respect for the equipment he uses, continues to come to the festival because of the people of Kearney. “The people that are running the event, you can’t get any better than that. That just means the world,” he said.
