Welcome one and all
The festival committee and its volunteers have once again outdone themselves to make sure festivalgoers at the 46th annual Jesse James Festival have familiar favorites, such as carnival rides, a parade, barbecue contest and children’s fishing tournament, while bringing new events and attractions like the KIDBUCK$ Game Show and the Western Youth Fun Show to keep children and families enthralled. The 2016 festival kicks off with a teen dance sponsored by First Christian Church’s youth group at 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 9, and keeps going with the Bill James Classic 5K/10K Run at 8 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 10, followed by a demolition derby at 7:30 p.m. Events continue with the opening of the carnival at 6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, and roll through Sunday, Sept. 18, ending
with the MO-KAN Dock Dogs finals at 3:30 p.m. Be sure to read through this year’s festival guide for all the details on this round of fun and excitement. For your convenience, a complete events schedule is located on pages 12 and 13. So, whether you’re a local or just visiting our fair city of Kearney for the weekend, join us for all the fun that is the Jesse James Festival and Jesse James AMANDA LUBINSKI/Staff Photo Park in the fall. Whether you enjoy good food, scenic parks, family games, dancing, music or shopping for crafts, the festival committee has worked tirelessly to make sure this year’s festival has plenty to offer. Western youth show emphasizes fun New to the festival this year is the Western Youth Fun Show. Organized by the festival committee in conjunction with Clay County 4-H, the show is an opportunity for youth up to 18 to compete with their horses in a fun, relaxed setting. The show will begin at 6:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16 on the Jesse James Festival rodeo grounds. Participants can preregister for the competition before Sept. 12 for a $15 flat fee or $3 per class through the Youth Show page on the festival website, www. jessejamesfestival.com. Registration after Sept. 12 is a $25 flat fee or $4 per class.
“It’s a combination of some of the traditional performance classes and rodeo classes,” said Grace Harriger, who helped organize the show with Pam Uehling. “We were trying to have a fun event where kids didn’t have to worry about making the horse all pretty or getting dressed up in show clothing. It’s about having some fun.” The schedule for the more casual competition features 26 events covering showmanship, tandem bareback, western discipline rail, western versatility, ribbon race, combination race and other fun race categories. Each event has categories for participants 14 to

18 years old, 13 and younger, as well as novice for beginning riders of any age. The competition is open to any participant, including those who do not belong to a 4-H club. There will be two jackpot classes, one for western versatility and the other for combination race, in which cash prizes are paid back to the top four places. Those classes are open to participants of all ages. Random prize drawings will also be held throughout the competition. “Every participant will go home with a prize,” Harriger said. It’s all a game with KIDBUCK$ Children and their families will be entertained with a new attraction this year that promises high-energy audience interaction in the form of a game show called KIDBUCK$ Game $how. “KIDBUCK$ Game $how is a thrilling game show where randomly selected members of the audience participate in wild and crazy games. Unlike many trivia-based game shows where contestants ring a bell and answer a question, KIDBUCK$ is an actionbased game in which the contestants are competing in clever, creative, challenging and entertaining games of a physical nature,” the show’s website, kidbucksgameshow.com, states.
How to play Nine contestants between the ages of 3 and 15 are chosen from the audience by a raffle system. “It’s really cool because it picks kids from out of the audience to participate and be on the show,” festival organizer Julie Hedges said. Contestants are divided into three groups based on size and physical ability. “Each group of three contestants play wild and crazy games to determine a winner. For example, in one of our popular games, Toss Your Cookies, contestants are dressed up like bakers with chef hats and aprons. Armed with

Studio 320 takes stage Studio 320 Dance will showcase its performers’ talent with a Kearney Amphitheater performance at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. Admission to the event is free. The amphitheater is located in Jesse James Park, adjacent to the pavilion. Our experienced staff will provide a positive environment for your child to excel and achieve their goals,” the company’s website, www.320dance.com, states. This year’s 320 performance will last about an hour, studio owner Tara Meinert said. “We have over 100 performers. ... Many (student performances) were choreographed and costumed on their own,” she said. This year the performance returns to the amphitheater stage after being moved to Washington Street last year to accommodate a MO-KAN Dock Dogs, dog water diving competition. “We’re excited to be back at the amphitheater. It’s a better location for our families.” — Amanda Lubinski

Arts & Crafts Alley brings new vendors Those who frequent Arts & Crafts Alley at the Jesse James Festival will find some new options from vendors this year, organizer Gerri Spencer said. “There’s more diversity on the alley this year for sure,” she said. In addition to a regular cast of vendors selling products and service such as windows, siding and insurance, Spencer said artisans will be on hand selling handmade soaps, appliqué pieces and art. “We have a couple people that I’ve spoken with that are planning on doing things working with wood. One does things like birdhouses, and the other is doing hand-painted canvases. history aficionados will regale festivalgoers in the alley during the festival. “There is a local Kearney man, and he goes out and does presentations with another man and they talk about mountain men and Indians and the Civil War era and things like that. So, he wanted to come out and do his thing, and they will set up a tepee and one will be dressed up like a Native American that would be represented in the tepee. ... I think the talk is about being self-sufficient and what it was like back then,” Spencer said. Arts & Crafts Alley is located along the walking trail in front of the lake in Jesse James Park. It will be open throughout the day Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18. — Amanda Lubinski

Barbecue contest spices up fairgrounds Kids Q adds youthful flavor to festival
One constant of the Jesse James Festival is the intoxicating aroma of barbecue. This year brings the 29th annual Jesse James Barbecue Cook-Out. Cooks will fire up their grills next to the Kearney Amphitheater on the festival grounds off Missouri Highway 33 north of downtown Kearney. Check-in times are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 16, and 7 to 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. There will be a meeting for all cooks in the contest at 6 p.m. Friday. The contest will be sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbeque Society, and its judging procedures will be used. The contest is considered a state championship with one division and five categories: turkey, beef brisket, pork ribs, chicken and pork shoulder/Boston butt only (minimum 5 pounds). Judging will begin at 12:30 p.m. Saturday. Only the four basic KCBS categories will count toward the grand champion and reserve grand champion awards. A total of $5,025 will be awarded with a $200 cash prize for first place in each category, $175 for second place, $150 for third place, $135 for fourth place, $125 for fifth place and ribbons being awarded in all places. The overall reserve grand champion will receive $500 and a trophy. The grand champion will receive $600 and a trophy. A plaque will be awarded by the Kearney Chamber of Commerce for the Showmanship Award. The entry fee is $150 for all categories, and advance registrations are strongly encouraged. Electrical hook-ups will be available this year for $25. Entry forms and copies of rules and regulations may be picked up from the Kearney Fire and Rescue Protection District, 201 E. Sixth St., or requested by mail from: Jesse James Barbeque Committee, P.O. Box 202, Kearney, MO 64060. — Corey Edwards
The festival will also host the sixth annual Kids Q for aspiring grill masters. Applications must be submitted by Monday, Sept. 12. No contestants will be accepted after that date. Check-in will be done at the adult cook’s meeting on Friday, Sept. 16, and the kids will start cooking immediately following that gathering. The children’s cooks meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the stage. Turnin will be at 7 p.m. Cooks 6 to 15 will be able to compete, and KCBS rules apply unless otherwise stated. Kids affiliated with a team at the KCBS contest may cook in the team’s designated spot. An area will be assigned for those youth contestants not with a team. One adult helper is allowed per youth cook. The child must do the preparation, cooking and presentation. If the child is unable to do all of these, the child is too young to participate. The adult helper may do lighting of the grill and/or any slicing deemed too dangerous for the cook. The adult helper must be present at all times until the box is turned in. Judging will be based on KCBS rules for appearance, tenderness and texture. Youth awards will be handed out a Saturday with the adult contest awards. Ribbons will be handed out for first through fifth places, with checks going to first and second places. RYNE DITTMER/Staff Photo

Storybook trail hops into literacy Kearney’s branch of MidContinent Public Library aims to increase youngsters’ literacy and physical activity levels with its Storybook Reading Trail at the Jesse James Festival. Throughout the festival, Jesse James Park’s walking trail will be transformed into an interactive reading drive where inquisitive and adventurous children in preschool through eighth grade will have the opportunity to act out and read along with relatives and a librarian the tale of “Ribbit” by Rodrigo Folgueira. “It’s about a little pig who wants to make friends, so he pretends to be a frog,” said librarian Carol Nolte. The book was named this year’s reading trail selection, Nolte said, because it was a 2014 Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award nominee.
“The Missouri Building Block Picture Book Award, administered by the Children’s Services Round Table of (Missouri Library Association), is presented annually to the author and illustrator of the picture book voted most popular by preschool children in Missouri’s public libraries. Designed to encourage reading aloud to children from birth through kindergarten age, the award was first given in 1996,” Mid-Continent’s website, www.mymcpl.org, states. “It’s neat because those books are voted on by children in Missouri,” Nolte added. For more information on the trail, call Kearney’s library at 628-5055. — Amanda Lubinski

Chainsaw used instead of brush by this artist Turning nothing into something beautiful is Stacey Robinson’s talent. One of the premier attractions each year at the Jesse James Festival, Robinson will bring his unique art expertise to the event again the third weekend in September. Creator of Robinson Chainsaw Carving, the artist has spent a lifetime perfecting a craft that began in his backyard. “One day I just stood a piece of (wood) up and ended up playing around with it. When I was done, I had a little cowboy,” Robinson said. “I set him on the porch and people would drive by and wave at it. Then they would pull in and say, ‘Can you do this or can you do that?’” Robinson, who currently resides in Montgomery City, established Robinson Chainsaw Carving as his full-time profession 18 years ago, but it was on his father’s land that the former carpenter first realized he had an artistic touch.
“My dad had bought a place that had a lot of timber on it and had it logged. We had all this wood laying there, so I started cutting the firewood and selling it. There were some beautiful pieces of wood. That is what I think started it all was I couldn’t stand to see the (wood) go to waste,” he said. Not wanting to waste any part of his splintery canvas, Robinson specializes in wildlife sculptures and western motif. He said one of his favorite pieces he has created is a Native American in full headdress sitting atop a horse with another Native American underneath the rearing mount. Robinson will complete multiple pieces at the Kearney festival, adding it takes him about half an hour to finish a sculpture. Families have a ball with bubble soccer Mike Dickerson is keeping children active at the Jesse James Festival one bubble at a time. Dickerson, the senior administrator of Northland Bubble Soccer, brings his interesting take on the sport of soccer back to the festival grounds Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 17 and 18. While the game can be a violent clash of inflated plastic, Dickerson said the sport is safe — but more importantly, fun for all ages. “Once the parents see how safe it is — because there is no body-tobody collisions, no more concussion discussions for outdoor sports — it is doing very well,” Dickerson said.
“Parents like it because you can do parents versus the kids.” Participants put on the bubblesoccer suit and are strapped into a harness for safety. Legs rest outside of the bubble, allowing players to kick the ball toward their intended goal — if they choose. For some bubble soccer players, the intended goal ends up being to smash against the competition. “It is kind of like having your own bumper car. It’s a cross between a bumper-car ride and a 21st century pillow fight,” Dickerson said. RYNE DITTMER/Staff Photo

Church services give nods to western spirit, area history in Jesse James Park, located off Missouri Highway 33 in Kearney. During the service, held under a 30-foot-by-50-foot tent, churchgoers are welcome to come dressed in their cowboy and cowgirl best, including Stetson hats and cowboy boots. “It’s been four years that we’ve been doing this, and it’s a great service,” organizer Jay Bettis said. “We will have good food and get to visit with one another. Since we
are under the tent, we will have it regardless of the weather.” Bettis said all are welcome to the service. “High Point is open all, and we welcome anybody that likes to have church,” he said. For more details on the reenactment service, call Lumm at 790-3251. For details on the cowboy service, call High Point at 457-9004.

Children’s tournament reels in fun
AMY NEAL/Staff Photo
The area’s smallest fishing enthusiasts will have their opportunity to reel in a prize for largest catch in the annual Jesse James Festival children’s fishing tournament from 9 to 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 18, at Jesse James Park Lake. The contest is open to those less than a year old to children age 12. The tournament will be divided into two age classes — 0 to 6 and 7 to 12 — with trophies and prizes being awarded for the biggest fish overall and those winning first- through third-place for each age class. A winner is determined by adding the length of all fish each child catches. Every participant will receive a goodie bag. Those who do not win a prize will be entered for a random drawing. Worms will be provided, but children can use their own bait.
“The event is rain or shine, unless there is heavy amounts of thunder or lightning, that is,” event organizer Josh Tipton said. “If it’s just raining though, that’s all right because there’s nothing better than a good morning of fishing in the rain.” Rules The tournament is a catch-and-release event where children can use lines and poles only. Parents can help bait hooks and release fish, but children must reel in the catch. Good sportsmanship is also encouraged. Pre-registration is not required, as registration is done on site. For more information, call Tipton at 305-9671. — Amanda Lubinski
