GLASFEST FESTIVAL GUIDE
October 4, 5 & 6, 2019
A Special Section of Courier-Tribune 3
Gladfest celebrates 40 years of fall fun Gladstone’s annual fall festival has celebrated autumn and the community for four decades. The time has flown by, but the fun is still going strong. This year’s milestone festival, with the theme “Flying Through Forty Years of Gladfest Fun,” will mix beloved traditions and new trends in entertainment. Axe throwing, a mobile scavenger hunt, cash prizes for parade entries and a revamped Kids Corner await alongside carnival rides, vendor booths of all kinds, a train show, concerts and other live entertainment on the Linden Square stage, sweet and savory treats, and more! Festival organizers added axe throwing to the weekend’s activities because of its growing popularity and as a preview to another event in Gladstone the following weekend: Whiskey Fest. “It’s new, fun, and it’s different for us,” said Amy Harlin, president of the Gladstone Area Chamber of Commerce. The organization co-hosts the festival with the city of Gladstone. Those willing to try their hand at the target throwing will be able to choose from implements including stars and hatchets. Festivalgoers with a keen eye and a mobile device are encouraged to explore the festival grounds looking for code words as part of a scavenger hunt for a chance to win gift
Gladfest is evolving with downtown, and Harlin said that includes finding ways to engage with the people who live and work there. “We’re looking for ways and opportunities to plug in with our newer neighbors and bring opportunities for them to enjoy the festival,” she said. A new approach to branding the festival and keeping it top of mind for residents and visitors is also underway. The logo used to promote this year’s festival is here to stay, a departure from the past, when the logo was updated annually to match the current theme of the festival. Sam the Scarecrow has been constant in the Gladfest logo, but through the years he has worn a top hat, a pith helmet, a sailor’s cap, an astronaut’s helmet and countless other costumes. The new logo features Sam, with a GLADSTONE DISPATCH FILE PHOTO Megan Lacy and her daughter Jillian, 3, ride the Jumping Jumbos at the Gladfest carnival. big smile and bright blue eyes, arms outstretched and welcoming. Arts and Crafts vendors will be located west of City Hall and south of the carnival. “We have opportunities for anyone who is looking for arts and crafts, home improvement services — maybe you are looking for a new church to visit or new health care,” said Amy Harlin, president of the Gladstone Area Chamber. All can be found in the tents set up on the festival grounds. “If you want to learn about political candidates and parties, and what they represent, there is an opportunity for you to do that as well.” Festivalgoers should come to Gladfest on an empty stomach. A feast awaits. This year’s festival menu includes the addition of a new barbecue vendor, mini doughnuts and pineapple whip — a dairy-free pineapple sorbet. “We also will have the festival standards everyone comes to enjoy,” Harlin said, listing off a mouthwatering selection of turkey legs, kettle corn, funnel cakes and other treats.
