A lasting smile
New dental implant system eliminates fear of slipping dentures Who would have thought, instead of potato soup for dinner, you could have had steak and corn on the cob, with a sticky, chewy caramel for dessert. And your denture would have stayed in place — all because a few hours earlier you had gotten dental implants to hold the denture firm and tight with absolutely no slipping. You read that right — a few hours after having dental implants, a patient of Jackson Family Dental, Dan, was capable of eating steak and corn with dentures and without pain. That’s all because of a new technique being used by Liberty dentist Jesse Jackson and only a few others in the state of Missouri.
JACKSONFAMILYDENTALONLINE.COM Traditional dentures have a molded piece that fits over the wearer’s gums. They work OK for most people, although you have to avoid certain foods and the fit usually changes the longer you wear them, causing your jaw bone to slowly disappear over time with extended wear. The advantage of implant dentures is it opens up the roof of your mouth, allowing you to taste your food again and eliminating the “whistle” some have pronouncing their words. When there is a problem with traditional dentures,
many denture wearers will tell you, it’s the bottom denture that causes the problem. Sometimes the gums recede and the jawbone changes shape. Dentures may slip and slide, causing pain and making eating difficult. For existing denture wearers, all of this can be avoided in just one appointment, during which the Syncone implants are placed. The Syncone system isn’t a “mini-implant” device some dentists are using. Bone will grow around Syncone implants, just as it does with other implants, and it will become a permanent part of the mouth. These implants are made to last for life.

More Than Collision Repair
Family-owned Wicklunds CARSTAR offers automotive detailing services, hail damage repair and much, much more. Please find our story on page 8.
AFTER After numbing the patient’s mouth, Dr. Jackson uses a laser to make a depression in the jawbone for the implants. The laser reduces bleeding to next to nothing, and sutures are not needed around the implants. Once the implants are placed, Dr. Jackson tops them with the corresponding attachment parts. He lines the denture that sits on the gums with a quick-cure acrylic and positions the denture on top of the implants. Seven minutes later, the attachments are a permanent part of the denture.
Careful positioning and physics allow the denture to be used right after the implants are placed. The denture touches the gum tissue, but it sits on the implants, which is why you are able to eat without pain right away. The new implant procedure is less expensive than the gold standard for lower dentures, which is typically about $10,000. The Syncone system compares by costing between $7,500 and $8,000. To find out more about this procedure or other implant solutions, call Dr. Jackson at 429-5799.

Saving energy’s the name of the game Like a lot of things in the Northland, PlatteClay Electric Cooperative is home grown. The rural electric cooperative formed after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Rural Electrification Act, which provided financing to build electric lines in the rural areas. Another important benefit of the rural electrification program was jobs. Providing electric service to the rural areas created hundreds of co-ops throughout the U.S. and thousands of jobs, helping the rural economy and helping bring the Great Depression to a close. Twenty-two area residents formed the fledgling co-op, and they, along with a few farmers’ wives, went door to door to gain acceptance and get a financial commitment to build the lines. Today it is hard to imagine that there was resistance to bringing in the “new” electric service, but that was the case in 1938. Some thought there was no need for that “city” service. Today Platte-Clay co-op members enjoy a quality of life equal to, and in many cases superior, to that of urban friends. Platte-Clay enjoys a high reliability rating, with most of the outages caused by weather, including trees falling into lines because of high wind, ice or tornados. To help maintain reliability, the co-op will come out and cut trees back away from lines; simply call 816-628-3121.

Thursday, Jan. 27, 2011 • COMMUNITY OUTLOOK • A supplement to Liberty Tribune, The Kearney Courier, The Smithville Herald and Gladstone Dispatch 9 The Northland publishing group of the Liberty Tribune, The Kearney Courier, The Smithville Herald and Gladstone Dispatch has undergone several changes in the past year. In March 2010, Matt Daugherty became publisher of the group of weekly newspapers. In November, the group
re-established a paper in Gladstone. And just last week the group overhauled its websites, making them easier for visitors to find the information they need and want. Looking ahead, we anticipate building on our past successes and continuing to be the best provider of local news in the Northland through our weekly print edi-
tions and our expanded online offerings. The communities we serve have come to depend of us to find out what’s going on in town as well as what deals and promotions local businesses have to offer. Below is a quick look at what’s been going on behind the scenes in our offices.
Community news hot off the presses — and online
The Smithville Herald 1001 S. Commercial Ave., Smithville 532-4444 www.smithvilleherald.com The Smithville Herald is one of the top newspapers in Missouri, and it has a winning website to match. The Herald won second place for General Excellence and for Best Online Newspaper/Website among weekly newspapers of its size in the Missouri Press Association Better Newspaper Contest last year. The Herald also has grown its commercial printing business substantially in the past year. This includes a number of direct mail campaigns. Jim Card heads up The Herald’s advertising and commercial printing efforts. He is joined in the office by Editor Nancy Hull Rigdon and Sports Writer Andy Meyer.
The Kearney Courier 105 S. Jefferson St., Kearney 628-6010 www.kearneycourier.com In the spring of 2010, familiar faces at The Kearney Courier took on new roles. Barb Strahm took over advertising sales and excels working with local customers. Janet Maddox returned to the Kearney office, where she continues to design ad layouts, handle classified advertising, legal advertising, subscriptions and more. Editor Kevin Smith has been joined by Sports Writer Bill Knust and Staff Writer Ray Weikal.
Looking forward This group of four newspapers has been laying the groundwork to add print and online offerings for readers and advertisers. To start, we have updated our websites, expanding our multimedia capabilities and increasing the frequency of news updates. New online features will enhance what we are able to provide to our advertising customers as we help them develop strategic campaigns to grow their businesses. Our core
advertising outlet is newspaper ads, but Internet and search engine marketing tools, as well as printing and direct mail options, are also available by contacting the sales staff. Beginning in March, readers will find a new section in their newspapers the first week of each month. Northland Family will focus on the dynamics of family life north of the river. As we get ready for this new addition, readers can start to get to know Northland Family on Facebook.
Liberty Tribune 104 N. Main St., Liberty 721-4941 www.libertytribune.com In July 2010, major renovations to the Tribune’s longtime home at 104 N. Main St. were completed, and the Northland publishing group’s central production office moved in, joining editorial and advertising staff already onsite. This change brought more than 15 full-time jobs to downtown Liberty. In recognition of this expansion, the newspaper was honored with a Community Growth Award from the former Partnership for Community Growth and Development, now Liberty Economic Development Corp. Editorial efforts are led by Editor Angie Borgedalen, Sports Writer Chris Geinosky and Photo Editor Matt Frye. Advertising Director Dave Mapel leads the sales staff. Gladstone Dispatch 104 N. Main St., Liberty 454-9660 www.gladstonedispatch.com — coming soon The newspaper gave the Gladstone community something to be thankful for in 2010, as Gladstone Dispatch made its debut Thanksgiving Day. This new incarnation of a Northland mainstay provides a vehicle for local businesses to distribute special offers and helps keep the community connected. Linda Petty is the driving force behind ad sales for the Dispatch, and reader submissions make up a large portion of the community-centered news and photos. Readers can expect to see continued growth in content and advertising in 2011.

Trapshooting
Trap shooting is one of the three major forms of competitive clay pigeon shooting (shotgun shooting at clay targets). The others are Skeet shooting and sporting clays.
About the Leagues Leagues are hosted year-round by the KCTA at the Smithville Lake facility. The purpose is to provide an evening of fair trapshooting competition open to all shooters of all abilities, novice to veteran. There are no gender or age limitations, and no required membership in any shooting organizations.
Beginning in 1995, the KCTA hosted monthly NSSA registered skeet tournaments each year. In 1996 the club has honored as the NSSA twofield club of the year. By 1997, the KCTA had become the second largest registered trapshooting facility in the state. Hundreds of trap shooters from throughout the Midwest compete during more than 30 days of ATA registered tournaments over the course of the year. In addition to national tournaments the KCTA hosts several trap leagues during the year. Since 1996, the KCTA has hosted the annual Kansas City Corporate Challenge Trapshooting Championships. Held each spring, the event draws over 100 competitors representing businesses throughout the Kansas City metro area. Many of these competitors are novice shooters, new to the sport and the Smithville Lake area. The KCTA is open to the public year round on weekends and some evenings, and other times by appointment. The club provides gun safety and shooting instruction plus loaner guns to encourage new shooters. In addition to throwing targets, a wide variety of shells, reloading components and shooting accessories are available at competitive prices.

With A French Accent bids a fond farewell Shop owners say ‘adieu’ after 15 years
After almost 15 years, we are closing the door at With A French Accent. As most of you know, we lost our beloved friend and business partner, Diana Wheeler, on July 31, 2010. Frankly, it hasn’t been the same without her. Since we opened in 1996, our With A French Accent “family” has, collectively, welcomed 13 grandchildren, buried six parents, one brother and several close friends. We have “financially aided” 16 undergraduate degrees, nine master’s degrees, two law degrees and one doctorate. Prior to the devaluation of the dollar in Europe, we would awake at the crack of dawn in a quaint French village and navigate (pre-GPS) our rental car to an antique fair in the remote French countryside. We arrived no later than 7 a.m. to secure a “prime position.”
At precisely 9 a.m., amid hundreds of antique dealers (mostly American) we would elbow a path through the gates and, literally, sprint (pre-arthritis) to the nearest vendor. (We have equated this phenomenon to the running of the bulls at Pamplona, though we have not actually witnessed this event.) Thank you for entrusting us to find objects you considered special enough to decorate your home, wear around your wrist or neck, or give to a friend or hostess. Merci, merci, merci for your loyal patronage, your friendship and the pleasure of your company. To say we will miss you greatly understates the fact. With appreciation and deep affection, Jill, Judy, Marcia, Marilyn, Sara, Laurel, Kristi, Mary Margaret, Ann and Jill S.

Family-owned Acton’s Auto takes pride in repair work Acton’s Auto Service is a family-owned automotive repair shop that’s been serving the Northland since the late 1940s. And in tough economic times like the country is experiencing now, the staff knows how important it is for drivers to keep up with the maintenance of their vehicles, starting with regular oil changes and tire care. “By regularly servicing the car you’re driving now, you will save hundreds if not thousands of dollars throughout the next few years of your car’s life,” according to owner Keith Acton and his staff. The Acton’s team works hard to create an honest, fair and convenient experience for their customers. The repair shop’s good reputation was built by Keith’s grandfather Oral Acton, who started the business in Avondale. Ted Acton, Keith’s father, bought the shop in 1957. In 1989, it passed to Keith. This long history of service means that many of the people who come to the shop are repeat customers or have been referred by longtime clients, Keith Acton said. “There are a lot of times when someone’s
family had brought their car to us when my father owned the place,” he said. “Some of the customers I’ve known all my life from being at my father’s shop when I was a kid.” While car repairs are being made, staff members will provide transportation to and from work or home for customers within a 10-mile radius of their shop. Acton’s Auto Service is conveniently located near Interstate 35, at 4219 N.E. Antioch Road in Kansas City North. Customer convenience extends to a computerized bidding system that saves time and is more accurate than other ways of estimating the cost of jobs. Acton’s excellent customer service is complemented by master technician Ed Cook and general technician Justin York. After several years of service, Cook continues devotes time to keeping up on the latest technology and equipment, and he is a certified motor vehicle inspector. The team at Acton’s has earned the trust of its customers by providing them the confidence that their vehicles stay in top shape with service from Acton’s.
