Each April since 1987, the National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (NCADD) has sponsored Alcohol Awareness Month to increase public awareness and understanding, reduce stigma and encourage local communities to focus on alcoholism and alcohol-related issues.

This year’s theme, “For the Health of It: Early Education on Alcoholism and Addiction,” aims at educating people about the treatment and prevention of alcoholism, particularly among youths.

Austin Henderson had three hits and drove home four runs in the second game of a doubleheader at Paola on Thursday, leading the Louisburg Wildcats to a 9-7 victory against the Panthers.

Henderson hit two singles and doubled. He also scored one run. Louisburg split the Austin Henderson doubleheader with Paola.

Alcohol use by young people is extremely dangerous — even for those who may never develop a dependence or addiction.

Adolescence is a time of heightened risk taking and young people may not be fully prepared to anticipate all the consequences of drinking alcohol, such as swigging drinks to “celebrate” a special occasion, or being in a car with a driver who has been drinking.

Alcohol is the number one drug of choice for America’s youth, and is more likely to kill young people than all illegal drugs combined.

Using alcohol and drugs before the brain has fully developed increases your risk for future addiction to alcohol and drugs dramatically. Young people who start drinking alcohol before age 15 are five times more likely to develop alcohol abuse or dependence than people who first used alcohol at age 21 or older.

Research for drug use and drug addiction has found similar results.

FAST FACTS: The Scope of the Problem 22.6 million people (9.2 percent) of the U.S. population ages 12 and older have an alcohol or drug problem.

2.4 million adolescents have an alcohol or drug problem.

50 percent of adults have a family member with alcoholism.

Approximately one in four children under 18 live in a family with alcoholism, and many more live in a family with drug addiction.

Alcoholism is the third leading lifestyle-related cause of death in the nation.

Alcoholism and drug dependence cost the nation over $276 billion a year, resulting principally from lost productivity and increased health care spending.
