Lakemary’s ‘Time for Renewal’ School Project Celebrates Children and Families

ovember 12, 2014, marked the dedication of a major renovation and expansion of Lakemary Center’s 45 year old school for children with complex developmental disabilities. The multi-million dollar project was totally funded by private donors. This speaks to the importance of what Lakemary does for some of society’s highest needs children and their families.

Lakemary began as a residential school for children with special needs in 1969. Through the efforts of the Ursuline sisters in Paola in partnership with community leaders, a star was born for families in crisis. Although the school has become much more specialized in educating these children through the years, Lakemary has stayed true to its mission of providing choices and opportunities to maximize the freedom and control children and adults with developmental disabilities can bring to their lives.

Current technology and “cutting edge” academics for this population have been incorporated into all facets of this project. Every child will benefit from new classroom experiences provided by this wonderful endeavor.

Lakemary’s school has evolved over the years to become much more specialized than in the beginning. In addition to the school, Lakemary’s residential component has changed significantly as well.

This is a result of the fact that communities have become much better at providing appropriate resources for this population. Over 100 students currently attend school at Lakemary. These include children, ages 6-21, enrolled in Lakemary’s psychiatric residential treatment program and those referred by area school districts as day students.

Lakemary’s programs for children in crisis have received national recognition. Although Lakemary continues to be a major resource for Kansas City area school districts and families, it now accepts chil-

dren from across the nation as well.

Through Lakemary’s strategic planning process, a 21st century school environment was envisioned. Donors made the project a reality. Existing classrooms were “gutted” and totally re-purposed to meet the ever changing needs of today’s students. New spaces were added to help children with the most challenging barriers.

The Discovery Center, which honors Dr. Patrice Schmitz Hall (former Lakemary CEO), is a sensory learning experience which includes interactive play and resource rich, small scale learning activity pockets providing a bridge for transition between environments.

The Bob Dole Family Center creates a nexus where families can begin to reconnect to their children and hasten the day when they can return home. Small, homelike settings, allow therapists to help these families learn new strategies that are proving successful at Lakemary and how to take them home.

This could not have been developed without the caring support of one of our dearest Kansas friends, Senator Bob Dole.

Lakemary helps children and their families achieve the best possible outcomes for successful transition to adulthood. For the hundreds of students who have graduated from Lakemary’s school, life as a productive member of an adult community has become an achievable dream. This project represents an investment in each child’s future because these children matter!
