brought to you by Vintage Park Assisted Living Communities Avoiding Falls at Home For individuals over 60 years of age, falling at home is a very real possibility. If you live by yourself, a fall could lead to you being incapacitated for a good amount of time. Residing in an assisted living community designed for your safety can help you avoid falling. Additionally, there are other steps you can take to make your home a safe place and decrease your risk of falling: Use Plenty of Light It is easy for persons of any age to trip and fall when it is dark. As a senior citizen, you should be especially aware of how much light is in your home, as this can help you avoid falling. Plug in nightlights in areas that are particularly dark, and have flashlights located in various places in case the power goes out. Having a lamp near your bed can help you avoid falling should you need to get up in the middle of the night. Stay Safe in the Bathroom A majority of falls at home occur in the bathroom. The bathroom can be a wet, slippery place, so it is best to exercise extreme caution. You can have stability bars installed in the shower and near the toilet and should consider using non-slip mats inside the shower or tub. If your balance is shaky, a shower seat can make bathing safe. Remove Hazards As you take steps to make your home a safe place, don’t forget to remove or put away items that could be dangerous. Be sure to clear from walkways any cords, boxes, or loose rugs that could trip you. If you have any rugs or floorboards that are in need of repairs, have them fixed immediately before they cause problems. Vintage Park Assisted Living Communities provides quality care for individuals over 60. Call one of our three Miami County locations today or come in for a visit to see how our communities can provide you or your loved one with a safe and comfortable place to reside.
