Gwangbokjeol is one of the great national holidays in Korea. It celebrates the day when Korea got its liberation and independence back in 1945, after 35 years under the oppression of Japan and the day of the establishment of Republic of Korea’s government in 1948. Gwangbok means finding the light again that once last. On Gwangbokjeol, it is encouraged to raise the national flag.
