“GO FOR A RUN

MORGAN. ...ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT LESSONS OF ALL TO ME.

WHEN I WAS YOUNGER MY MOM WOULD HAVE TO SNEAK OUT OF THE HOUSE AND MY DAD WOULD HAVE TO PRETEND WE WERE PLAYING HIDE-AND-SEEK FOR HER TO LEAVE MY SIGHT. WHEN I FINALLY NOTICED SHE WASN’T THERE I WOULD JUST START CRYING. 20

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • MAY / June 2014

i am fortunate enough to say i have grown out of this stage where my mom and i don’t have to be connected at the hip but our relationship has always been close and that hasn’t changed. there are many reasons why my mom and i have such a strong, healthy, loving relationship. My mom knows when i need to be sat down, lectured and have a life lesson. she knows when i’m hurt and when to hug me or the right time to tell me “there will be other boys, Morgan.” something my mom has said to me for years now and i didn’t realize that she was teaching me so by this phrase is, “go for a run Morgan.” these words have been coming out of her mouth for years now and they have been one of the most important lessons of all to me. My mom had me in every sport possible growing up, dance, horseback riding, soccer, cheerleading and whatever i wanted to try. My parents always let me try whatever had me stay active. i remember my mom coming to support my soccer games and than her driving me to ballet right after while i tried changing into tights and a leotard in the back of her car. i didn’t think anything of it then but my mom has been teaching me an active lifestyle since i was in 1st grade.

Words: morgan moxley

My mom and i started getting into longer distance running about the same time. Right after my junior year of high school i wanted to challenge myself and run a local half marathon, after completing that, i caught the running bug. My family and i went on a trip to Hawaii and i ran the half while my mom took on the 10k. We have always pushed each other to be the best possible versions ofourselves. even though i’m in college now and we can’t actually motivate each other in person, there isn’t a couple of days that go by where i don’t get a motivational quote from my mom or a link to a race so that we can meet up and run it together. exercise to my mom and i is being healthy, fit and strong but it’s also being able to spend quality time

together, having bad run days and telling each other that at least we were out there. i am so grateful to have such a strong role model in my life and someone to be passionate about their health but still being able to go run a race and then have a beer afterwards to reward herself. We live hours away from each other but our daily workouts keep us closer then we ever have been. When i get stressed out and overwhelmed with school, ROtC, life, boys, friends and just growing up i call my mom and she still says, “go for a run, Morgan.” Just a 30-minute run helps me clear my head, re-evaluate my life and helps me feel invincible for the rest of the day.

LIFT HEA

THE ANSWER IS SIMPLE, BECAUSE YOU WANT TO BE STRONGER. 22

i will also accept setting a new personal record, lifting more than someone else, and because you enjoy picking things up and putting them down. if you’re looking for a reason associated with weight loss, then you’re letting the purpose of lifting heavy get away from you; it’s about you and the weight lifted and not much else. However, if you’re interested in what happens to the body when you lift heavy,

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • MAY / June 2014

i’m all about that. the first thing we should get out of the way is the definition of lifting heavy. For purposes of this article, lifting heavy means performing 1-5 repetitions with 75%-100% of your 1 rep max (1RM), 3-10 sets, and 2-5 minutes of rest between sets. squats, dead lifts, overhead press, weighted pull-ups, snatch, clean, bench press, and strong man exercises all fit within this framework.

Words: renee horinek Web: stoneandbarbellclub.com

YOU CAN EXPECT STRONGER BONES.

a comparison study looking at vertebral bone density between different athletes and occupational workers found that Olympic weight lifters had the strongest spinal columns of the groups tested, and thus were less susceptible to developing osteoporosis later in life. interestingly, former ballet dancers were found to lose bone mineral density at a faster rate than controls in the study. a side note for individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis, use of heavy weight and shorter repetition sets are indicated, with some modifications. incidentally, spinal flexion exercises are not; curl-ups and sit-ups should not be done after a diagnosis of osteoporosis. the overwhelming evidence is that an early start into lifting heavy protects against age or activity related declines in bone mineral density.

YOU CAN EXPECT IMPROVEMENTS IN CARDIOVASCULAR HEALTH.

AVY? WHY SHOULD YOU

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT WHEN YOU LIFT HEAVY.

muscle, the result is a more dense muscle, in part due to a decrease in fat storage sites within the muscle belly you can expect to experience some that occurs after training with heavy growth of skeletal muscle. However, weight. the other reason is that more and this is quite interesting, despite a type 2 fibers are recruited during lifts significant increase in individual muscle that require high force production, and fiber size, whole muscle size will not lucky us, those are the same fibers that substantially increase after a heavy are most susceptible to growth, the lifting program. instead of a larger principle of specificity at work!

While the improvements in blood pressure, resting heart rate, and cardiac performance are not as pronounced after strength training versus endurance training, positive adaptations are still possible. During a single heavy lift, systolic blood pressure can increase up to 3x that of resting blood pressure. after long-term exposure to heavy lifting, resting blood pressure can decrease up to 2-4 mmHg. additionally, increases in cardiac muscle strength, without a decrease in chamber size (a marker of cardiovascular disease), was found after repeated exposure to strength training.

YOU CAN EXPECT IMPROVED CARBOHYDRATE AND FAT METABOLISM.

Long term resistance training can lower the percentage of glycosylated hemoglobin (Hba1c), a measurement of average blood sugar levels across a 3 month time span. in fact, a modest increase in type 2 fibers corresponds to an increased breakdown of excess fat tissue, improved carbohydrate usage, and combined with improvements in insulin sensitivity, an increase in muscle mass. training tip: add carbohydrate to your post-workout protein shake to take full advantage of insulin’s action on skeletal muscle. the science behind how exercise changes the body is awesome, but it doesn’t necessarily contribute to an individual’s desire to exercise in a certain way. in my professional experience, a mix of personality and knowledge contributes to that decision. the most successful clients and patients i’ve had took it upon themselves to investigate the how and why of exercise, thus securing a deeply appreciated hobby into their lives. the decision to lift with heavy weights should come down to simple mathematics; the continuous subtraction of past personal records from your latest one, and an unshakable desire to see the number increase. SPORTS REHAB Words: dr. robert sindorf, dC

1. i make sure all

of the joints in the body are moving the way they are supposed too. this includes all joints from the first toe all the way to the spine.

24

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • MAY / June 2014

do You KnoW What to do if You are sufferinG from an injurY, or speCifiCallY a sports injurY? Well if you have an injury and you have though, “i will just give it time and wait for it to get better”, then you are not alone in this thought process. Unfortunately this though process can lead to you being away from physical activity longer than you have too and suffering from pain longer than necessary. i see patients all the time who think if they wait just a little longer their injury will get better on its own. Chances are the pain may decrease but the injury to the soft tissue structures will last and affect other structures for a very long time. For athletes taking time off can be very tough because you are working against the clock for an upcoming event you want to be involved with. an important thing to do is find a sports doctor that understands your goals and how to help you in your treatment and rehab while you are training so you can stay active and heal quickly. Finding a sports doctor is an important step in keeping you healthy and active.

2. i find the tissues

that are not working the way they are supposed too. When a tissue is not working the way it is supposed to it will generally be painful.

3. i find out

what muscles are tight and what muscles are weak. From there i place each patient on a unique rehab exercise protocol.

i haVe a three-tier philosophY that i base most of mY CliniCal Care off of and it is VerY effeCtiVe at helpinG patients staY healthY and aCtiVe. 1. the first thing i do is make sure all of the joints in the body are moving the way they are supposed too. this includes all joints from the first toe all the way to the spine.

2. the second thing i do is find the tissues that are not working

the way they are supposed too. When a tissue is not working the way it is supposed to it will generally be painful. Pain is the body’s way of letting you know that something is not working the way it is supposed too. When the soft tissues in the body are not working the way they are supposed too this often leads to scar tissue development inside of the muscle, tendon, or ligament. Using techniques such as active release technique or instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization i can help to break up scar tissue and help the tissue heal quickly and properly.

3. the third thing i do is find out what muscles are tight and what

muscles are weak. From there i place each patient on a unique rehab exercise protocol that includes strengthening and stretching exercises they work on outside of the office. this approach to treating injuries is very successful and helps to insure you are as active as you want to be for as long as you choose to be. Please remember this information is for learning purposes only and should not be used for self-treatment. if you are suffering from pain or an injury make sure you see your health care provider as soon as possible. if you are having a medical emergency, contact emergency health professionals immediately. P

DR. BRYANT PHYE OPENED A SMALL PRACTICE WITH 100 ACTIVE PATIENTS LOCATED IN OLATHE, KS IN 1994. HE HAD JUST GRADUATED FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA DENTAL COLLEGE AND I WAS STARTING DENTAL SCHOOL AT UNIVERSITY OF MISSOURI- KANSAS CITY. OUR DAUGHTER, JASMYN, WAS 11 MONTHS OLD SO IT WAS A VERY EXCITING AND SCARY TIME FOR US.

We had a son, Mason, during my third year of dental school, this only added to the excitement of our lives however, we were fortunate that dentistry allowed us to have time with our children.

AS FAR AS MISCONCEPTIONS: it seems like the majority of the population has some sort of fear of the dentist. For example, many fear potential pain or discomfort, the noise of the “drill,” or are uncertain of the cost of different procedures. Dentistry has changed a lot since we have been in practice. the materials are stronger and more esthetic, the anesthetic is more effective, and appointments are becoming shorter due advanced technology. Many patients are scared to go to the dentist because they are scared of having a cavity every time. With routine dental check exams, this can be prevented and allow the dentist to diagnose decay early. this prevents having advanced procedures such as crowns and root canals needing to be done, which cost more, take longer, and requiring more frequent appointments.

GETTING SET UP: all dental office policies are different, however, at most dental offices, new patients will schedule for an initial exam that usually includes a prophy (teeth cleaning), bitewing x-rays which help the hygienist and dentist diagnose any disease and an exam by the dentist. if the new patient is having problems with their teeth or gums, they can schedule directly with the doctor to address the situation. KINDS OF SERVICE WE OFFER:

We are a general practice, therefore we can perform most dental procedures. if a case is more difficult or advanced, we can refer the patient to a specialist. some of the services we provide are one visit all porcelain crowns called Cerec Crowns, Porcelain Veneers, composite (white) fillings, invisalign Braces and dental implants just to name a few.

Words: dr. Vanessa phye

ADVANTAGES OF HAVING HEALTHY TEETH: there are so many benefits to having healthy teeth and gums...here are just a few:

1) IT IS VERY BENEFICIAL TO YOUR HEALTH TO HAVE HEALTHY TEETH AND GUMS. it maintains the patients overall health, you have a better smile which in turn gives the patient more confidence in everyday life. 2) HEALTH ISSUES FROM HAVING BAD TEETH: -gum Disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. -Halitosis/ bad breath -Connection (evidence of) that links gum disease to heart disease (heart attack and strokes) -tooth decay 3) YOU SHOULD SEE YOUR DENTIST EVERY SIX MONTHS TO MAINTAIN ORAL HEALTH. Regular check ups can also help identify any other issues a person my be experiencing such as, early stages of lupus, diabetes, oral cancers, eating disorders (anorexia/bulimia), Bruxism (teeth grinding), or Kidney disease. these are just a handful of health issues that can help diagnose early stages of systemic diseases. 4) PEOPLE SHOULD AVOID HIGHLY EATING HIGHLY ACIDIC FOODS. the acid “eats” away the enamel and makes it weak. it is then easier for the cavity causing bacteria to produce decay on their teeth. 5) PATIENTS SHOULD BRUSH 2-3 TIMES PER DAY AND FLOSS ONCE A DAY. teeth that are brushed and flossed regularly are free from decay and healthy gums. 6) PRODUCTS PEOPLE CAN USE AT HOME: simply brushing with a soft bristle tooth brush, fluoride toothpaste and floss are the main tools that keep your teeth and gums healthy. your dentist or hygienist may recommend other interproximal (in between your teeth) cleaning aids or mouth rinses. they can be medicated or contain extra fluoride. special tooth pastes can also be prescribed to help reduce a high cavity rate or sensitivity. 7) MANY PATIENTS WILL GRIND OR CLENCH THEIR TEETH (BRUXISM) AT NIGHT OR EVEN DURING THE DAY. this is very detrimental to teeth and can cause many problems, it can cause jaw pain, headaches, and soreness of facial muscles. the trauma from Bruxism can cause bone loss around the teeth or even fracture the teeth where they can not be saved and will need to be removed. this issue can be addressed by wearing a mouth guard that your Dentist or their lab makes for the patient. it will be specially designed exclusively for the patient and will be comfortable enough for the patient to wear at night.

TAYLER PARRY STOOD BACKSTAGE AT HER FIRST FITNESS COMPETITION, NOT REALLY SURE WHAT SHE GOT HERSELF INTO.

she looked around and saw groups of girls that had trained and gone through every part of the experience together. “i remember thinking that i wish i had done this with a bigger group, but at the time i was doing it for me and knew it was going to be great,” she says. and she was right. One competition led to another and she was addicted. WWW.KCFITMAG.COM

YOU ARE NOT GOING TO BULK UP AND LOOK LIKE A MAN. 34

Kansas City Fitness Magazine • MAY / June 2014

THE CONFIDENCE YOU GET FROM COMPETING IS NOTHING I COULD EVER EXPLAIN IN WORDS. AS A WOMAN IT IS REALLY EMPOWERING.

P

Parry’s interest in fitness competition sparked in 2010 after looking through a fitness magazine. she flipped to a page full of pictures of female fitness competitors and became curious. Parry was a ballet dancer for 14 years, but stopped dancing and missed the feeling of being on stage. she wanted to do something that would give her that feeling again. after reading through the magazine she decided to give fitness competition a try. she hired a trainer and began training for her first competition that year. now, almost four years later, Parry has been in eight shows and has her own team of 24 girls called team taylerMade that she trains for bikini and fitness competitions. “it’s crazy to see where you started and where you are,” Parry says. “you get to that point where you reach a level and want to go to another level.” Parry tells us more about her life as a fitness competitor and coach, and helps us get a better grasp on what female fitness competition is really like. Parry has competed in two different organizations. the first organization she competed in was the north american natural Bodybuilding Federation, or nanBF, which is an all-natural organization that puts on local shows in Kansas City, as well as other places in the country. another organization, WBFF, approached Parry and asked if she would be interested in competing in one of its shows. this was the second show WBFF put on in Kansas City. the look of the WBFF show was different than other shows Parry competed in because it mixed fitness with fashion. “i was very intrigued about this organization and it kind of reminded me of being a dancer again because one of the elements of the competition is theme wear,” she says. Parry competed in two different categories in this competition, which were bikini and fitness. there are so many different female body types, so breaking up the groups into bikini, fitness and figure benefits women with all types of bodies. the difference between fitness and bikini competition is that bikini is a softer look. it’s not as lean and muscular as fitness or

figure. Parry says most organizations want a bikini competitor who is athletic, but still very poised on stage. “they want someone that fits an overall athletic, healthy and pretty look on stage,” she says. “you do have to work hard to step on the stage as a bikini competitor.” Fitness is a step up from there with more of a leaner look with definition in the muscles. there’s a common misconception that women will get big and bulky if they lift heavy. that’s not true. “you are not going to bulk up and look like a man. they are taking that idea from an image that they’ve seen online of a huge female bodybuilder who isn’t natural by any means,” Parry says. “With that being said, it’s also about what you eat because they go hand in hand.” yes, fitness competitors eat too. it may not be burgers and fries, but instead chicken and broccoli, but they do eat. “that’s something i hear all the time, especially from some of my friends. after a competition they will be like, ‘oh you can eat now,’ and i tell them i eat real food every day,” Parry says. “it’s still real food, but it’s better for you.” Becoming a fitness competitor is all about lifestyle change. Changing your lifestyle to become a fitness competitor takes a lot of dedication and self-control. “you aren’t completely giving up your life, but there are many times where you have to dedicate yourself to your goal and to the sport if it’s something you want to continue after just one show,” Parry says. to some people, the hardest part of the journey might not even come until show time. Parry says the biggest hurdle girls have is knowing that they have to step on a stage in a tiny bikini in front of an audience full of strangers, which can be terrifying. in the end, the hard work and effort put towards getting to the stage make walking out on stage worth it. “the confidence you get from competing is nothing i could ever explain in words. as a woman it is really empowering,” she says. it takes a strong willed person to be a competitor, but Parry thinks anyone can step on stage if they stay dedicated. Competition Taking on the

IT’S CRAZY TO SEE WHERE YOU STARTED AND WHERE YOU ARE AFTERWORDS.

if someone is interested in becoming a fitness competitor Parry recommends that they do some research. get on youtube and watch videos of competitions. if there is a local show coming up, go watch it. While you are at a show, try and talk to some people in the industry. “there are coaches there and you can get tons of information and network with people and see how a show is really ran,” she says. the next step is finding a trainer or coach. even if you are strong willed when it comes to workouts and you are great with nutrition, Parry says to find someone who has either put people on stage or who is a true competition prep coach to help you with the small things.

T

the Kansas City fitness competition world keeps growing and there are a lot of local shows. there are some well-known athletes in Kansas City that travel all over for fitness competitions. “it’s a niche, but it’s a lot bigger than what people would think,” Parry says. some of the local shows have more than 200 athletes that compete. this year Parry will have 13 girls from her team compete in the southern states Classic, a local show in Liberty. Last year she only had three girls compete in that same show, which was also the first show her team ever competed in. “it’s a small industry, but really big at the same time,” she says.

HOW TO SURVIVE POOL SEASON. WITH: ELROY CARR as temperatures Warm up and summer approaChes people are no lonGer hidinG from the Cold. When the weather is nice we do more outdoor activities and spend more time outside, so it’s important that we prepare our bodies for the increased activity and heat. Personal trainer elroy Carr of elroy Carr Fitness gives us some tips on how to make sure we can stay safe and successful in our fitness goals this summer.

EXERCISE

Carr says we need to do more functional training to stabilize our muscles and prepare our bodies for those outdoor activities we haven’t done all winter. We don’t want to injure ourselves. Running outside after not running outside for four or five months can cause shin splints, sore arches in the feet, or a pulled hamstring. elroy says to prepare for running outdoors by doing some light hill intervals on the treadmill. this will prepare your body for the outdoor terrain. if you are a person who swims in the summer, but you didn’t do much for your upper body strength during the winter, do some heavy rope drills and get back into your pushups. “this will prepare yourself for the motions that go along with swimming, but it will also help you with tennis, golf, softball and other activities in that nature,” Carr says. increasing cardio during the summer is important because of the heat plus the added activities. We tend to expand a lot more calories and need to make sure we have the endurance for summertime activities. “as the weather changes start adding 10 or 15 more minutes of cardio in so you can be more prepared for the activities you do during the summer,” Carr says. Carr has his clients start out at 240 minutes of cardio a week. He

calls this the magic number. anything past 240 will cover a healthy heart, reduction of body fat and stimulation of endurance. “there’s 10,080 minutes in a week, so we should be able to find 240 minutes to do cardio,” he says. When you think of having a swimsuit ready body, you probably picture yourself with a six-pack and strong core. you also probably do a seemingly endless amount of crunches, hoping it will bring you closer to that picture perfect body. Carr says you should actually cut back on the core work and focus more on cardio. you still need to do your regular core work, obviously, but you don’t need to torture yourself with sit-ups. if you have an hour to spend on a workout, instead of doing 30 minutes of abs and 30 minutes of cardio, do 10 minutes of abs and 50 minutes of cardio. “We already have strong abs. if we can walk, stand up, carry things, twist and turn, then we have a strong enough core that if we are lean we will look pretty good,” elroy says. there are going to be some occasions where there’s some work that needs to be done with the core, but Carr says if we are lean we will be impressed with what we find under that winter blanket. HOW TO SURVIVE POOL SEASON.

NUTRITION

a good, healthy nutrition plan shouldn’t change much because of the season you are in, but it does change with the activities you do. elroy says you want to make sure you are eating your vegetables and fruit, and make sure you stay hydrated through out the day. “these are all things you should do all the time, but it’s very important that you start that early because adverse feelings or things you may have from a lack of nutrition will start to come on sooner when it’s induced by the heat and extra activities,” he says. you may hydrate to a certain point when you are doing minimal activities and not sweating much, but when you hydrate that way with the added heat and activities your body will have issues later on in the afternoon when the day is hottest. Carr says to hydrate earlier in the day and a little more often.

43

HOW TO SURVIVE POOL SEASON.

WHEN CARR IS WORKING WITH HIS CLIENTS HE HAS THEM EAT THE COMPLEX CARBS in their eating plans

around the time they are doing activities. a lot of people try to trim back their complex carbs as the day goes on. if you know you are going to go out swimming at noon and your second meal of the day is usually lighter without a bunch of complex carbs, you might want to add some healthy carbs like oatmeal so you have energy for that swim. if you plan to go on a 2:00 bike ride you might hold back on eating your carbs earlier on in the day and add them in for lunch so you can have the energy for the bike ride. “that really doesn’t change with the season, that’s just manipulated by the time of your activity,” he says.

THESUMMIT

t

he summit is a fullspeCtrum fitness and Wellness faCilitY disGuised as a GYm, loCated just off mass street at 9th and neW hampshire streets in sCeniC doWntoWn laWrenCe. it is not, as rumored, home to the nation’s largest collection of unfrozen neanderthal strong-men, picked apart in a basement biochem lab for the Dna secrets of their unrivalled strength and mobility. it is a fantastic place to work out, though. the summit is located right around the corner from the beating heart of Lawrence, and its members represent a wide slice of its health-conscious community.

the summit also offers on-site massage and aRt therapy, two infrared saunas to assist with detox, access to Poliquincertified personal trainers, Poliquin PiCP and Biosignature modulation, and nutrition consulting. the summit approaches physical wellbeing as a core component to holistic wellness, and believes that there is no one-size-fits all approach. to that end, you are encouraged to explore what is available and customize your training approach accordingly.

if you prefer to be left alone while you get after your elliptical, treadmill, machine or free weight workout, the summit is happy to oblige. Drop in, get sweaty, and stop off at the front desk for a recovery drink or Paleo-friendly snack on your way out. We’re always glad to see you.

all members have access to a 300-square foot bouldering wall, Precor treadmills and ellipticals, stairmaster, stationary oaring machines, free weights, squat racks and benches, a deadlifting platform, Olympic bars, multi-functional full cable selectorized circuits, and a combat-sport gym with a regulation-sized ring and 8 heavy bags, 2 infra-red saunas, full-service locker rooms, and free parking in an adjacent garage.

On the other hand, if you are looking for a partner to help nudge you along your personal fitness journey, the summit offers training classes such as strength, conditioning, body composition, boxing and kickboxing.

and if after all that, you get ten minutes into your workout and think, “man, forget this,” there are dozens of bars, restaurants and shops within a 3-minute walk downtown, so keep your friends standing by.
