A Letter from our Event Co-Chairs Welcome to the Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art’s sixth annual UrbanSuburban Exhibition & Art Auction and the Epsten Gallery’s 10th anniversary celebration! Through the efforts of our dedicated volunteers and staff, we are delighted to present this evening of great art and delicious food at the Epsten Gallery. We are also grateful for the opportunity to support KCJMCA’s important and unique purpose: to provide innovative art exhibitions and related programming that engage seniors and diverse audiences from all segments of the community to enrich lives and celebrate our common humanity through art. We are especially grateful to this year’s Honorary Chairs, Irwin & Rita Blitt for their generosity and support of KCJMCA and for their creative spirit. We also wish to give very special thanks and congratulations to Epsten Gallery Underwriters Robert & Jacqueline Epsten for offering Village Shalom and the Kansas City community 10 years of outstanding exhibitions and programs!
Urban Suburban 2010 Co-Chair Harriett Charno
We would like to thank KCJMCA Executive Director Eileen Garry, for being an inspiration and driving force behind this event’s success, and KCJMCA Curator Marcus Cain and Administrative Assistant Abby Rufkahr for their dedication and creativity in helping this organization achieve its vision. Without the efforts of the wonderful staff of KCJMCA, this event would not be possible. An important acknowledgment must also be made to the many artists who have contributed such fine examples of their art in support of KCJMCA and its programs, and to Village Shalom’s residents, staff and extended family for their inspiring partnership. Sponsors and patrons are vital to helping us achieve our goals. Your contributions allow the KCJMCA to present outstanding exhibits and programming for the community and residents of Village Shalom. We all appreciate and welcome your support! We hope you have a great evening. Enjoy the food and the company, but most of all enjoy the art. By being a successful bidder, you have the opportunity to support the Epsten Gallery, the artists, and to enrich your own life with art. We hope you will have a wonderful time!

A Letter from the President Dear Friends, KCJMCA’s Epsten Gallery is a unique gallery located in a senior care facility. However, because of our roots in Museum Without Walls, we have opportunities and flexibility to present exhibits and programming outside Village Shalom. This allows us to bring in and support a variety of contemporary art content while serving multiple audiences and interests in the general community. Members as well as newcomers to the organization have attended KCJMCA’s many successful art crawls. We have toured private collectors’ homes, artists’ studios and the One Percent For Art program sites in Kansas City. The tours have even taken us to Omaha, Nebraska with a special opportunity to meet the internationally known ceramic artist Jun Kanaeko. We were also privileged to visit the home and private art gallery of the late Phillip Schraeger, who was ranked among the top art collectors in the country. We are planning more crawls for the summer and fall of 2011 that will be equally informative and fun. This year, Urban Suburban, our annual fundraiser, will help celebrate our tenth year in the Epsten Gallery. Urban Suburban has earned a reputation for being a special art auction, featuring local and national artists. At this great event, guests have an opportunity to purchase original art during our silent and live auction. Please save the date, Saturday, October 23, for this important fundraising event. Simply put, we do a lot of wonderful stuff for the community and the arts, and I urge you to join us in our efforts. If you are already a member, tell your friends about us and urge them to be members. If you are reading this and you are not a member, please join this fantastic organization and help us to continue our meaningful work. We are here for you!

Art is a Quality of Life Issue:
The Vision of Robert & Jacqueline Epsten
Bob & Jackie Epsten at the 2008 Urban Suburban Patron Party
Established in 2000, through a generous gift by Robert & Jacqueline Epsten, The Epsten Gallery at Village Shalom engages residents in conversations and new relationships that stimulate the mind and broaden contact with the world. The Kansas City Jewish Museum of Contemporary Art has made a longstanding commitment, together with Robert & Jacqueline Epsten and Village Shalom, to advance the use of museum-quality art exhibitions and programming to enhance the lives of elderly citizens and the suburban community through this wonderful venue.
Over the past decade, we have witnessed our exhibitions and programs inspire residents and staff of Village Shalom, artists, and members of our suburban and urban communities alike. Representing a strategic partnership, a vision, and more than a decade of community support, we are honored to acknowledge 10 years of the Epsten Gallery’s museum-quality exhibitions and programming for Village Shalom and the Kansas City region. Our mission has been to provide innovative art exhibitions and related programming that engage seniors and diverse audiences from all segments of our community to enrich lives and celebrate our common humanity through art. Through your generosity and continued support, we hope to keep the Epsten Gallery at the forefront of both mind and effort – to identify art as health and human enrichment, and as an enhancement for every stage of life. Thank you Robert & Jacqueline Epsten!
