About your Students’ Union Hi! We’re King’s College London Students’ Union (KCLSU). Together with our members we are a union of students where individuals connect, have fun, build communities, share experiences, and make change. We’re here to make sure that every King’s student has the best student experience possible. We’re run by students, for students. As a democratic charity and membership organisation students lead us at every level. As well as empowering our students to share and use their voice, there’s loads of other ways you can get involved with your Students’ Union including: Impartial and confidential support from our Advice Service Joining one or more of the 300+ student-led activity groups, societies, or sports clubs Visiting a KCLSU Student Centre, available on every campus Discovering the Capital with our Unlocking London events Socialising in our two Students’ Union bars Making a difference through volunteering and fundraising Shaping your experience through Student Reps, Student Council and Student Officers Working for us as part of our Student Staff Team Read on for more on what we can do for you.

Last year, 45 students were democratically voted into Student Council
Over 65 KCLSU policies were passed through Student Council and the AGM in 2013/14

Student Officers making change
College invest £4 million in campus WiFi The reliability of WiFi on campus is something students regularly told us they wanted to see the College improve. Student Officers worked to get student views heard, helping to inform the College’s decision to approve a £4million investment in campus WiFi.
College scraps re-sit fees Your Student Officers, powered by students using their voice have successfully lobbied the College to remove all fees related to re-sitting any exams or assessments from August 2014 onwards. This sees an end to you having to pay £75 to retake an exam, or paying up to £200 if you’re a Dentistry or Medicine student. We believe failing an exam or assessment is stressful enough, without the additional penalty of a re-sit fee.
International and Postgraduate fees regulation Until now, fees for International, part-time Post Graduate Taught and Post Graduate Research students haven’t been regulated. We wanted to see that change. After lobbying from the Student Officers, the College agreed that, between years of study, these fees won’t rise above inflation.

Highlights
Student Reps There are over 600 Student Reps working hard to make a positive impact for students at King’s. Students in each Programme or Department elect Student Reps to represent their year group on School Forums and Student-Staff Liaison Committees. Go to kclsu.org/studentreps to find yours.
Student Councillors Students in each programme or department elected a total of over 600 Student Reps last year
There are 45 members of the Student Council. They’re responsible for deciding the policy and campaigns KCLSU takes on, and representing the student voice at every level of KCLSU, the College and the national student movement. Find out who your Student Councillors are at kclsu.org/studentcouncil.
How to get involved Shape your time at King’s by standing to be a Student Officer, Rep or Councillor. If you’re not interested in standing yourself, get yourself represented by voting for who’ll be your change makers during elections. Student Reps participated in School Forums and Student-Staff Liaison Committees to address student issues
Campaigns Students at King’s are passionate about loads of issues from defending student rights to campaigning for a fairer society. Getting involved in a campaign is a great way to create positive change on the things you really care about. Here’s some of our current and past campaigns:
Living Wage Campaign Student Reps helped collect over 1,700 rants in 2014 Rant Week, the most yet! This helped the successful campaign for KCLSU and KCL staff to be paid the London Living Wage
Students successfully campaigned alongside cleaners and trade unions to ensure that all staff at King’s, including those employed by subcontractors receive a London living wage.
Save Our Staff Students across the College campaigned to stop 120 academic redundancies in the Health Schools this Summer. The concern being that these cuts would have a massive impact on teaching quality, research and staff morale. By mobilising a campaign group and combining forces with the Universities and College Union, the College reviewed their plans and reduced the number of ‘at risk’ staff by almost half.
Longer library opening hours
Find out more: W: kclsu.org/representingyou E: representation@kclsu.org
In 2013 over 700 students took action to call on the College to increase library opening hours. This included having the 24-hour access to libraries during exam periods extended to include Medical students’ exam times. The result saw library opening times increased to when students need them most.

We’ve got 276 student activity groups and societies
KCLSU supports over over 270 student activity groups and societies. These groups are run independently by students and are supported by KCLSU. There are loads to choose from, including groups about business, campaigning, common interest, faith, culture and much more. We’ve also got dedicated activity groups for what you’re studying, for example medical students can take advantage of the GKT Medical Students’ Association (GKT MSA), General Practice Society, Paediatrics Society and more. Take a look at the ‘academic’ or ‘medical’ sections of the Student activity group list in Appendix 1. Joining an activity group or society is one of the best ways to get involved with student life at University. With such a variety of groups to choose from, there’s something for everyone. If you can’t find one for you, you can always apply to start your own group. You can join student groups throughout the year online or at KCLSU Student Centres. Some are free and others have a small membership fee to pay for events and activities the group put on for their members.
Student activity groups and societies have a total of 9,169 members

Going into a career, I can take the skills I gained here which will be so beneficial!”
Widening Participation £137,442 raised for charity last year!
Your background shouldn’t stop you from applying to university. We want our campuses to be inclusive and diverse. Reaching out to underrepresented groups and communities is a really important part of making sure everyone feels equally able to attend university. Widening Participation is all about spreading the word and encouraging young people into higher education. It targets under-represented groups or communities but also includes other projects that promote university, or King’s specifically.
