JAZZ PROFILES WITH NANCY WILSON Monday at 9 pm 4/2
Max Roach An innovative drummer, bandleader, composer, and educator, Max Roach (pictured) was a musical renaissance man. He was Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie's drummer of choice as they developed bebop in the '40s, and his innovations forever changed the way drums are played. In the '50s he co-led (with trumpeter Clifford Brown) one of the seminal groups of jazz, bringing bebop to new levels of sophistication. In the '60s, he created a range of compositions reflecting the struggle for civil rights.

4/30 Charlie Parker Part 1 Charles "Yardbird" Parker (pictured) was a self-taught innovator who could fly higher and cut deeper than any other musician of his day. Parker pioneered the bebop movement in jazz with trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie. He influenced generations of musicians. He accomplished all of this and other feats despite a crippling drug addition that ended his life at thirty-four. Trace his instrumental virtuosity from his early days in Kansas City to his bebop experiments in New York to his ill-fated trip to LA in 1945.

Jason Moran on Piano Jazz Rising Stars with Jon Weber
4/11 Thomas Lauderdale Pianist Thomas Lauderdale (pictured) is a cofounder of the celebrated orchestral ensemble Pink Martini, which bridges classical, jazz, world music and old fashioned pop. On this Song Travels, Lauderdale brings along a few of his musical collaborators, including NPR’s Ari Shapiro, who proves to be as good a singer as he is a journalist. Lauderdale solos on Malagueña by Ernesto Lecuona, and duets with Feinstein on George Gershwin’s The Man I Love.
4/18 Bette Middler
The Divine Miss M—singer, actress, and comedian Bette Midler (pictured) —is Feinstein’s guest for an hour of pure radio fun. Midler opens a crate of favorite tunes from her record collection—from Louis Jordan to vintage Hawaiian music to Destiny’s Child, along with stories from her multi-faceted career. Feinstein presents her with a solo arrangement of I'll Be There, a song written for her by the legendary songwriting team Alan and Marilyn Bergman.

Benny Green's Monk with Gary Smulyan at the KC Jazz Club The Kennedy Center is the home of the low blow tonight, as five-time DownBeat baritone sax poll winner Gary Smulyan joins the committed, brilliant pianist Benny Green (pictured.) Listen for rhythmic energy, quirky Thelonious Monk melodies, humor, and the Washingtons—Peter and Kenny (no relation)—ideal on bass and drums.
4/12 Cuban Guitarist Juan Carlos Formell and Johnny's Dream Club from the Monterey Jazz Festival 4/19 James Farm at the Beantown Jazz Festival James Farm (pictured) offers flexible originals in jittery, bobble-head rhythms served up with panache. Beantown Jazz says the acoustic foursome "reads from a new book, airing less jazz and blues than folk and pop, delivered with swaggering chops. Joshua Redman, the standout improviser in this leaderless cooperative, blows tenor with robust conviction alongside Aaron Parks, Matt Penman and Eric Harland."

A Fond Farewell To Mal Sharpe & Back On Basin Street It is with an appreciative heart that we bid a warm and fond farewell to Mal Sharpe and “Back On Basin Street”. After 20 plus years of Mal’s unique blend of Magical Musical Mania, he has decided to cut back a bit on his very full and over-committed schedule and make room for some well-deserved, long-overdue sleep and R&R. Mal says: “I need to slow down on Sunday nights like the rest of the world, so now I'll be in bed at 9PM, with my head on the pillow, listening to Jazz 91 and counting sheep. I’ll really miss talking to the KCSM audience and meeting them in all the nooks and crannies of the Bay Area. It was great fun, but it was just one, of those great, great things." Mal is one of a kind, and we are grateful that he chose to share his Man on the Street enthusiasm, passion and craziness with us and our audience for these past few decades. Thank you, Mal…You’re the Best!
Song Travels with Michael Feinstein
The renowned “Ambassador of the Great American Songbook,” and five-time Grammy nominated performer, Michael Feinstein, hosts a new public radio series (produced by South Carolina ETV, who produced Marian McPartland’s Piano Jazz) that examines how popular standards and show tunes have evolved through the years, with every new interpretation and new artist. Each week a new guest joins Feinstein for intimate explorations of the journeys of songs and the artists who perform them. Guests share insights into their own interpretations of classical to present-day composers. The line-up of top performers spans the musical spectrum, from Liza Minnelli and Bette Midler to violinist Joshua Bell and Pink Martini pianist Thomas Lauderdale, to current U.K. pop sensation Rumer, who brings the Great American Songbook to a whole new audience. With this new series, Feinstein, a longtime archivist and advocate for the repertoire, brings his life’s work to the public radio airwaves, re-introducing the original canon of American show tunes and standards through fresh, unique translations. His guests share their passion for the songs through solo performances and duets with Feinstein, illustrating the continuing development of the songs across time.
